John B.McClelland Joins Star Staff During the past decade, Port Perry and the communities surrounding the Village have ex- perienced a steady and healthy growth. During eight of those yeors the Port Perry Star has shown the same trend and grown in size and hopefully, Stature. in September, 1963 the cir- culatién of the Star was a mere 1,100 compared to almost 3,000 today, eight years later. There is always room for improvement in any business and the Star is certainly no exception to the rule. With this in mind, the publisher of the Star is happy to announce that badly needed assistance in the editorial department has been engaged. Starting with this issue, John B. McClelland, 24 years old will be contributing to the columns of the Stor as a news reporter and editorial writer. Mr. McClelland was born in Montreal, attended primary and secondary schools in Deep River, Ontario hes recently completed a three year journalism course at Centennial College Toronto. Although a young man he has travelled ex- tensively from coast to coast in Canada and visited several European countries. He has many interests including sports film and live theatre and naturally all kinds of writing. However, he says, he is especially interested in the contemporary youth, their problems likes, dislikes, etc. After having lived for the last fiv@ years in Toronto, he says he is looking forward to working and living in Port Perry, away from race. Unit To Test Water The Oshawa Ontario County District Health Unit this week will be taking water samples along the west shore of Lake Scugog near Port Perry. The tests will be conducted as a result of recent com- plaints by local residents that a substance appearing to be detergent is floating on the water and collecting along the shore of the lake A member of the district health unit says that both bacteriological and chemical analysis will be made of the water samples. The bac- teriological test. will deter- mine the sewage and bac- teriological content of the water and' the chemical analysis will determine what chemical properties are in the water, and if the foamy substance now washing ashore is indeed detergent A resident of the area told the star that a water sample taken two years and analyzed by the Environmental Health Services of the Ontario Health Department proved to have detergent properties If the results of the water testing this week determine the substance to be detergent innature,the district Health Unit says it will take steps to find the source and stop the flow of the substance into the lake In a brief informal address, Mr. Laing said he was especially pleased to see such a large number of young persons present. Mr. Laing went on to speak of the meaning of the liberal philosophy. He said that the security and health of every individual are of the utmost importance, and that each person must have the op portunity to make the most out of his individual life. Fun damental to this thought the Minister said are the ideas that people must be kept healthy, and foday's youth must have the best of modern education In closing, Mr. Laing stated that "in these difficult times, we can only do our best."' But he added. "'of all the countries in the world, Canada should have the least to fear." Mr. Laing was thanked by Ron Sproule, President of the Ontario Riding Liberal Association, and host Tony Cesaroni expressed his gratitude to all the people who attended.
