"The Lure And Lilt of the Homeland" | By the Happy Wanderer Glasgow had blessed us with brilliant sunshine for two great fun packed days. But the morning we left for Fort William it was dreary and drizzly all along the way. The breathtaking beauty of Loch Lomondside was blanketed from view. But whatever of gloom was on the outside there was never a dull moment inside. Humour 'broke at 'a touch with 'funny bones' doing double duty. You might not think that Glencoe is a good spot for laughter but during the lunch break served in professional manner by both Daisy and John, gladness )} Here is a story that perhaps makes the point well. , Campbell and Macdonald had been good friends for {{ years but one evening when out for their customary { walk, Macdonald was quiet and very un- } communicative, so his friend asked what was the matter . . . 'Well if you must know' said MacDonald, 'it's that terrible massacre at Glencoe by the Camp-- § bells I'm thinking about' ™ 'Ohman, but that was hundreds of years ago' remonstrated Campbell. 'That might be' replied } MacDonald,' but I just heard about it yesterday.' When we arrived at Fort William every available space seemed to be thronged with visitors. In the main street it was an achievement to make your way with an umbrella without coming into collision with an ob- truding balmoral and tossing it on the sidewalk. Our room for bed and breakfast had a wonderful view of the bay where the fishing boats lay peacefully at anchor. On Sunday morning the chimes from the local churches made us aware of how much we had to give { thanks for in such a setting of natural beauty of } shimmering waters and purple clad hills. Ben Nevis the highest mountain in Britain looks { down over the town with a beneficent gesture. A large part of the prosperity now enjoyed comes from that giant source of unlimited power. It was Tom Johnson 2. the Secretary of State for Scotland that envisioned the } transformation of the area by the hydro schemes to { make new industries flourish. The Wiggin Teape Paper { mill is a striking example. An expenditure of some { twenty million pounds sterling has been a gigantic thrust forward in the economic climate » The soft cadence of the highland tongue where you might imagine rush and worry were an unknown factor, cause the heart to pause and wonder about the fret that can destroy so much that is lovely On that unforgettable Sanday afternoon, the sun shone in generous measure as we made our way to Kyte of Lochaish pausing for a short historical review at Eilean Donan Castle in Wester Ross. So much of in- { terest gathers around the remains of that intriguing place that we will wait for that development next week. And then it will be 'Over the Seas to Sky' Hope you will be with me as we look at the wonders of the 'Misty Isle' in graphic detail eres Hn ititit Hl : fj if ; | F iif : BA 4 preke ful Ssfie gels g Pp i PS) Short Rib Roast MAPLE LEAF SWEET PICKLED COTTAGE ROLLS SIDE BACON SS S555 5 catered for the Manns - Munroe wedding reception in the Utica Hall on Saturday.
