The big, good-natured crowd started to assemble early. In fact, when the tioket sellers arrived on the scene two parties were found to be enjoying their picnic dinner^, they having driven up from Algonquin at this early hour to insure themselves of a grandstand seat. By 1:30, one hour before the game wad scheduled to start, more than three hundred fans had passed thru the gates and from this time until 2:30 the assemblage kept growing until more than sixteen hundred had congregated. The crowd was easily the largest that ever attended a baseball game in McHenry, not barring the exhibition games as staged here some years ago when the Chicago White Sox and Cubs were the attractions. The playing field, especially the diamond, was in even better condition than a week ago, when Algonquin and Antioch hooked up in a slxteefi inning struggle which ended in a 4 -to 4 tie. Considerable work had been done on the infield during ih& week, which accounted for the excellent shape it was An accident to Bailey, Antioch's classy first baseman, at the beginning of the game sort of marred the contest for the time being. The accident also seemed to unsteady the entire Lake county team as the same life that characterized the previous Sunday's battle was noticeably missing, at least thruout the first three or four innings. Bailey suffered the fracture of his left arm in the very first inning when he was throfwn to the ground by an Algonquin runner who was on his way to first. This delayed the game for several minutes. Algonquin had all the better of the argument up to the eighth Inning. The Indians succeeded in pushing two runs over in< the initial round and came back in the third and fourth innings by adding one more score hi each round. The Antioeh outfit, which wa^ playing sort of a lifeless game during the first two innings, started going In the third inning when they registered their initial run. This was all that they were able to accomplish until the eighth, when the, Lake county gang started in on Osberg with a vengeance and before the Indians were able to stop the terrific onslaught four of the Antiodi crew had crossed the counting station, the score then standing 5 to 4 in favor of the boys from the east. Davidson, who occupied the hill for the Lake county outfit, settled down after the fourth run and with the assistance of some fast and clever fielding and excellent throwing on the part of the out-fielders succeeded in holding the opponents safe the balance of the way. Algonquin made a desperate attempt to even up matters in the ninth, but to no avail. Marsilius, who for more than four years hps been the superintendent at the Woodstock typewriter factory at Woodstock, has resigned his portion to accept the management and vice presidency of the Davenport Manufacturing company TlaW.. i if' J ' w ",f'v t If . COMMUNICATED Reasons why the state highway should pass thru McHenry on Waukegan street: First: The right-of-way would cost the tax payers less than any other route. Second: It would give. McHenry two permanent bridges. Third: By extending Riverside Drive to Waukegan street east McHenry would do a better business than ever before, Centerville and West McHenry would also get a share of the trade that this new road would bring to town and to which they are entitled. Fourth: McHeijjry would soon grow nto a combined and progressive city. Fifth: The farmers would have a cement road to and from the depot and milk factory. Sixth: It would also shorten the froute for the school children and grown-up people living east of McHenry by about a half mile each way. So let's all pull together and become a booster by voting for the jWaukegan street route next Wednes- Uay and show the present administration that we do not want any change made in the route as selected and surveyed years ago by the state as the hgical route. Now if the voters will turn out piext Wednesday and • vote for the ^Vaukegan street route, the state fvill have no further excuse for delayng the building of this road. Therefore let everyone become a booster fend vote YES on next Wednesday, Sept. 26. Frederick Bellqr. CHICAGO CAR BURNS ON ROAD NEAR HARTLAND Mr. and Mrs. C. R. J • (CRACKS IN CEMIJNT ROAD BK1NG REPAIRED The cracks in the new cement road between Volo and Wauconda are be ing repaired with tar. The stretch Of road was only recently accepted by the state. According to Charles Russel, Lake county superintendent of highways, the state does not approve contracting joints in the cement preferring to allow it to crack where there is the most stress and where the weakest points lie.
