WAS AFRAID OF FAST BOAT "Its kinder afraid of fast boats" remarked Charles F. Chapman in response to an invitation to ride in the pleasure runabout owned by Charles H. Lee of Grand Rapids, Michigan on White Lake recently. It required the urgings of the owner and a dozen regatta visitors there to induce him to step into the handsome craft for a little spin down the lake. And they dont know the joke yet. Chapman holds the world's speed record in Gold Cup contests. He drove the fastest heat of the series in Detroit last September with "Miss Columbia," defeating Caleb Bragg in the Cup winning Baby Bootlegger", and lost the cup itself by the narrowest kind of a margin. It was Chapman who found the hest water in the Hudson on which the R. F. Hoyt "Teaser" made its record run on the Hudson last May; he was navigating for Car Wood when that world champion failed to break the "Teaser" record with "Baby Gar IV" a week later. Just this past week Chapman failed to break the "Teaser1 record with Gordan Hammersly's flyer. The Hammersly boat Went against the Hoyt and Gar Wood marks on Tuesday, July 14th and beat both records New York to Castleton, when the 600 H P motor stopped momentarily and the up-stream effort failed. On the down trip Chapman again broke records A1 bany to Poughkeepsie, and once more the giant engine hesitated. The attempt at the "Teaser" mark will he made again this coming week. The man who quibbled about riding in a pleasure launch on White Lake will drive a remodeled "Miss Columbia" in the Gold Cup regatta at Manhasset Bay August 27-30 in a second attempt to take down this famous trophy and he faces fourteen of the best speed boat drivers in this country.
