Her fellow clfcrks as well as her employer regret the fact and to show their regard and friendship a surprise was perpetrated upon her Thursday evening at her home on South street. The evening was made enjoyable in various ways. Mrs. E. Wightman celebrated the ninety-first anniversary of her birth on April 8. A pleasan^ family dinner party was given at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Kittie Stebbbins, at which the two sons, Henry of Chicago, and John of Chenoa, 111., were present. The house will be strictly modern, and owing to the location will 'be one of the most desirable In McHenry. Peter J. Freund was both architect and builder, which speaks volumes for this capable gentleman. Fred Schneider will build a spacious addition to bis residence. The old house will be moved back and a new front 16x26 feet, comprising two stories, will be erected. The grocery store and postoffice at Big Hollow burned to the ground on Saturday, at noon. The building was owned by Williaml 'Simes and the store was Conducted by Gus Peterson who is also postmaster. The telephone office was also located in the building. The fire had a mysterious origin and the place burned so quickly that little of consequence was saved. The grocery stock was worth about $1200 and the building about $600. Little insurance was carried. Elmer Francisco of Ringwood had an experience last Monday morning that he does not care to encounter again. He attends the McHenry high school and was taking his accustomed drive to our village, accompanied by Miss Ruth Wright, one of the teachers. They were driving along leisurely unconscious of danger, when overtaken by a run-away team. The pole struck the buggy, but was prevented from doing injujry' to the occupants by striking the back of the seat. Fortunately, Elmer's horse ran, and in giving it full rein, further trouble was avoided. The team ran into a farm yard and was stopped. In a shooting contest at Watson Park, Chicago, Tuesday, for a side bet of $200, J. R. Graham, of Long Lake, well known in McHenry, defeated Dr. J. L. Williamson of Milwaukee by a margin of four birds. The event was at 100 live pigeons per man at 30 yards rise. Graham shot in snappy and quick time, almost five yards faster than Williamson, wh) seemed more deliberate in the use of his second barrel, which allowed the tailing birds too much distance. Graham scored 94 birds " in the total, while Williamson scored ninety-one. Mr. and Mrs. F\ J. Gerretsen of Fox Lake, are the parents of a baby daughter, bom Wednesday^ morning.
