RAGSOK TEBS Sam Slapper and Ben Zeen got into a yuar'I yesterday at recess an* they took it up again after school let out. Finely Ben says, "If you say that again," says he, "I'll lick you," he says. "Huh!" says Sam, "I'd like to see you do it," he says. "You could not lick nothing," says he. "You couldnt even lifik a postage stamp,' he says. "It has cost me a lot of money to send my boy to college, but I am already getting some returns," declared Cy Kology. "He has finally made the football team, eo X .now have a quarterback." . • ; During an examination Jimmy came across a question that absolutely floored him. "If one horse," it ran, "can run a mile in a minute and a half, and another is able to do the same distance in two minutes, how far ahead would the first horse be if the two horses ran a race of two miles at their respective speeds?" At last a bright idea struck him. He returned the paper with the query unanswered, but with the following comment: "I refuse to have anything to do with horse racing." Can you imagine what would have happened in the olden days if grandmother had said to grandfather: "Will you shave the back of my neck?--" Jimmy gets a nickel, and he hikes down to the store. Doesn't even wonder what he's gonna spend it for. Knows it's gonna buy him a lot of trash and stuff. Things he'll get a lot of will be plenty good enougn. Hangs around the counter, lookin' over candy trays. You can see a twinkle in the little fella's gaze. Think of it! A nickel--and the whole thing can be spent. Asks a heap of questions, like, ¥How many fer a cent?" Now he's sorta stoopin' with his rfose against the glass, payin' no attention to the other folks who pass. Just inside the counter are the best things he can find. Jimmy's tryin' mighty hard et makin' up his mind. Well--the buying's over and the store man sighs with relief. Waitin' on the little flok is just a lot of grief. Still, the patient store man, as he takes things from the shelf, seems to smile right through it. He was once a kid himself. After Mr. Flitterly had raked his yard he took the accuumlated rubbish into the road to burn. Among the neighbors, children who came flocking around the bonfire was a little girl whom Mr. Flitterly did not remember having seen before. Wishing with his usual kindliness, to make her feel at ease, he beamed upon her and said heartily,, "Hello! Isn't this a new face?" A deep red submerged the little girl's freckles. "No," she stammered, "it isn't new. It's just been washed, that's all. . A large force of men were put to work and by almost superhuman efforts succeeded in saving it. Butter, packed 20 cento and rolls 15 cents; cheese 14 cents, eggs 12% cents; lard 13 cents, and chickens 5 to 7 cents a pound. The steamboat "R. Emerson" which has changed hands since last season is to be immediately overhauled and put in running order for the summer. The owner informs us that he expects to put her in condition to run to Fox Lake in less than an hour. April, 1902 In a runaway Tuesday afternoon at about four o'clock, R. T. Hutson met death and Dr. Wells was badly bruised Tuesday afternoon Dr. Wells received a call to Fox Lake and as his own horse needed rest he hired a team at Lampherejp livery, and securing the services of Mr. Hutson as driver, started on the trip. For some unaccountable reason the horses became fractious and started down Elm St., at terrific speed, the driver being unable to check them. Dr. Wells advised holding the team straight for the river if possible for that seemed the only safe way to terminate the race, but Mr. Hutson tried to make the turn at Riverside House and both the occupants were thrown to the ground. A beautiful stern-wheel launch belonging to C. P. Barnes was unloaded here Tuesday and launched in the river. The boat is about twenty feet long, is pure white trimmed with brass fixtures, and will be an ornament on the beautiful Pistakee. Walker I wuz glad t' read th' other day where somebuddy said that th' greatest kindness state or nation could do fer th' farmer would be t' get off his neck an' let him alone, to quit takin' his mind off his work, t' quit naggin' him, an' botherin' him wjth investigators, and advisers, an' inspectors, an' regulators, an' dictators. Other professions haint continually beset by such pests. But here is a hot one--The Wall Street Journal says the farmer don't pay half enough attention t' his home an' family, and reminds him that th' most valuable crop he kin raise is children. Kin you beat it? Th' birth r#te is prob'ly fallin' off in Wall Street an' in other streets in other cities, an' here they come wanting the farmer t' maintain th' birth rate 0' th' natiort, t' raise more children t' fill up th' gaps in th' cities. CitJ people have too much gaddin' about, too much club work, an' lodge woik, an' social duties, o' one kind an' another, t' fool with children, so they are as^in' the farmer who hain't got nothing t' do but plow, an' milk, an' shuck corn, an' cut wood, an' feed hogs, an' lay fer chipmunks, an' worry about where his next box o' axel grease is comin' from, t' git busy an' raise more children.
