WHILE at the Fair-this week do not , fail to see the beautiful OH Paintings ©n exhibition by Miss Clara B; Owen. Wfi are indebted to Geo. S. -Curtis: for a couple of very fine fish for our Sunday's dinner, for which he will please accept our thanks. ' WE have received ail advertisement from C. F. Hall, of the Dundee and Richmond Cheap Store, which will ap pear next. week. WE were treated on Monday evening to a splendid serenade. The music and singing was number one. and highly enjoyed by us. Come again boys. WE have received the proceedings of the Board of Supervisors, but too late for publication this week. They will appear in fidl in our next. TIIK Ciscoette Train, on the Fox Biver Railroad, was taken oft on Mon day last. This train is run principally for- the accommodation 5f summer vis itors at Geneva. THE McHenry County Fair is in pro gress at Woodstock, but we have been Unable to learn the number of entrees before we go to press. We shall en deavor to give a full report next week. THE Oven for the New Bakery is al most completed, and Mr. 'Best informs lis that he will be ready for business about the first of next week. lie is now in the city purchasing his stock of Confectionery, fancy Groceries. &e., IT is not always safe to bet how straight a man can shoot. Some that • could not kill a chicken in a month will take an old hat on the 11 y every time. We know of one man who will vouch lor the truth of the above every time, THE autumn leaf, so brown and sere. Is on the eve of falling here ; and' each Bad heart will drop a tear In memory, on its lonely bier, and thoughtfully conceal the fear, that frosty nights. are drawing near--'when each will take hi* whiskj' clear. II. WiiKKl.Eli.of the Kivcrside lIous<'. lias the main part of his resid»*nOe up and partially enclosed, and he is juish- ing the work on it rabidly in order to get it completed Isefore cold w'eather sets in. When fmi>hcd it will be ah ornament to that part of the village. C. II. MOKEY, of this village lias been appointed Agent for the Protection Life Insurance Company. This is a No 1 Company, and Morey is a No. 1*Agent, end therefore we see no reason why the Protection should not succeed in this section. We shall speak more* of this company next week. A. MALZER. formerly of Woodstock, can now be found at the Meat Market of Wm. Fisher, in this village. Andy is one of the best butchers in the coiui- ty. and as a maker of Bologna cannot be be/it. And withal he is a tip-top- good fellow, and we are glad to wel come him to McHenry. THE Woodstock Dramatic Society play the "Hidden Iland" Wednesday and Thursday evenings of t|his week. We have no hesitancy in pronouncing them the best Amateur Dramatic So ciety in the Northwest, and no one who visits the Fair should fail to see them at least one.night. It will well repay you. ' WE are indebtedno our old friend. W. R. Forest, now County Clerk at Hamliton, Nevada, for late copies of Nevada and California papers. "Will" has become justly popular in his new home, and his many friends in this county will be glad to learn of his suc cess. He will do honor to any position r which the people of Nevada may call upon him to fill. W. W. •ELLSWORTH, breeder of the celebrated Magie Hog. returned last week from tl»e Wisconsin State Fair, where lie had been exhibiting his stock, and as usual he came off victorious over everything, lie drew fifteen Premi ums, thirteen class Premiums and two ^Sweepstakes. amounting in all to 0178. 3fr. Ellsworth was obliged to compete against some of tlie best breeders in the country, but all were willing to ack nowledge that his -celebrated Magiee (Could not be be*t. He sold upon the Grounds six Pigs at prices ranging from #20 to #50 each. Ills stack will be at ' the County Fair thSs -week, and no one who goes, should fail to see it. As a breeder of pure bred 1vogs Mir. Ells worth has no superior and fiew equals # In the country, and his stock is all Leoor J.o Mcllenry comity. Ife.' WE met O. Rishop the wide-awake dealer in Agricultural Implements, the other day. and he called our attention to the fact that his boot was busted wide open. Visions of somebody who wouldn't be able to sit down to eat theijr meals for the next few days, floated before our eyes, but after due deliberation we have come the con clusion that it is a new patent. Call at his shop and if he don't show you, the boot he will sell you anything in his line, from a whiffletree to a wegon AS cheap as the cheapest. J. STORY, the Hardware and Stove, merchant, whose store can be found op posite Owens' Mill, is now putting in a large stock of both Cook and Heating Stoves, for Coal or Wood, to which he invites the attention of the buying publ ic. His Stoves are purchased direct from the manufacturers, and at figures that will enable him to sell as low as the lowest. His stock of Hardware, Tinware, &c., is complete, and those de siring to purchase cannot fail to be suited at his store. See advertisement in another column. ' ' WE must acknowledge that we are a little pufczled. An occurrence has hap pened right here in our midst, and yet we cannot get head or tail in regard to the facts. Somebody stole somebody's bottle of whiskey. Still another sonic- body informed the agrieved somebody that the first somebody had authorized somebody to do something, but we don't know what. Then we learned that the agrieved somebody got out a summons to compel somebody to return the bot tle of whiskey,--^or something,. Now what the de vil all this means we would like to have somebody tell. ,F. G. MAYES, the Merchant Tailor HI the brick block, next door to Colby's Drug Store, is, we learn, the oldest businessman in McHcnry. He came to this village twenty-four years ago and opened his shop, and has remained "true to his first love" ever since, and is as firmly of the opinion now as ever that McIIenrv is destined to be the .first town in the ccwnty. He has prob ably dressed up more men than any other man of his age, and still holds himself ready to do that same thing in the latest style and at figures to suit the times. -- L. STODDARD has removed across the street, to the store formerly occupied by G. T. Howe, where he can hereafter be found by his old customers with a 'full stock of choice family Groceries, Crockery,Hats, Caps, &e., which he will ofi'er to the buying public at as low prices as any store in the county. He will keep none but the best of goods, and will sell them as nearest of any man can and live. He invites' his old customers and as many new ones as may see fit to call and /ee him in his new quarters and examine goods and learn prices, PE' EKSON'^ Magazine for Ot'totwr |s already on our table, and a* usual, is full of good things. We have tu» hesi tancy in pronouncing this tlx? best La dies Magazine now j iil.li*1,<ed Its wri ters are the best, its fashions the latest, and each number (Contains a piece of music w hich is in itself ivorth the price of the magazine. In short it is full of good things, and a gentleman can make no better present to tiis wife or daugh ter then a years subscriptions to this popular magazine. Price ©2 per. year. Address, Clias. J. Peterson,306Chestnut Street. Philadelphia, Pa. IN another column can tie found the new advert jseipe^t of Aldrteb & Smith. Richmond, which was received too late f<rr insertion last week. They are now receiving an jmnieiwe 1, c.f .Fall and Winter Goods, consisting in part of Dry Goods Clothing. Boots. Shoes, Hats, Caps. w hich they propose to sell at as low figures as any other house in the county. Tlie members of this firm are both live business men, and believing that "a nimble sixpence is better than a slow shilling" se 11 their good-; accordingly? and the consequence is their trade is increasing every day. Do not fail to read their advertisement, and when in Richmond give them a call. ^ Yuri? TTo'iie Paper has some advan tage over the bij^itv weekly after all. True it does not qmitain quite as much reading matter. /Audits costs a litle more; but which is the most useful and interesting? Do the city papers say anything in regard tbyour own county ? Nothing. Do they contain notics of your schools, churches, meetings, Imr provements, and hundreds of other local matters of interest which the coun'y paper published without pny? Not an item. Do they ever say a word calculated to drawr attention to our county and its numerous thriving towns, and aid in their progress and enter-? ,prise? Not aline. And yet there are men who take contracted vieWs of this matter, that unless they are getting as many square-Inches of reading matter in their county paper as they do in a city paper, that they ate not getting the worth of their money. It reminds iw» of the person who took the largest pair of boots in the box simply be^cawse they coat the same as the pair muefe smaller, that fitted* ; t The next regular meeting of the McHenry County «entr#J association Patrons of Husbandry will be held at Growers Hall.Crystal L«k«.on Wednes day," September 30th. 1875. By order of Co«H»itte^ Jtt. M. CLOTHIER, Sec'y, Base Ball. The Bashful Boys of this village and Spring City Juniors, of Woodstock, played the second of their series of games at the latter place on Friday hist, which resulted in favor of the Spring City Club by a score of 24 to 17. The day^was cold and raw, and conse quently the game was not as good a one as could have been expected under more favorable circumstances. The next game will probably be played in this village. On Saturday the' Club from Geneva Lake caroe down for a friendly game, but® the boys found ifealmost impossible to get together a" nine, but finally suc ceeded in jpicking up enough to give the Genevaites a little practice, the game resulting in a score of 37 to 15 in favor of the latter. But four or five of the regular nine of this village were able to play. WE learn that W. G. Hiulhorst. a young man who has become somewhat notorious in this village for his "do- nothing*' qualifications, has been pass ing himself off as associate editor, agent, and several other things in con nection with this paper, ami on the strength ofthis borrowing money and getting his board, promlsingto pay- when he received his salary. Now we wish to state that said Ilullhorst never was in our employ any* capacity, was never authorized by us to receive subscriptions or do any business what ever for us. and all such representations made by him are falsehoods, manufac tured out of whole cloth. After borrowing money of whoever would lend him a dollar, he left this place last week, and the last we heard of him he was passing himself ©ft' in Elgin as editor of this paper which to make people believe appears to be the height of his ambition. Shoidd lie ever make his»|>perauce in this section again his reception will be more warm than pleasaut. O.XE of the most^eowardly and dis graceful acts that i\: has been our provi nce to record for many a day, and which almost proved a murder, occurred in our vjllage on Friday morning last, between the-hours of two and three o'clock. There is so many stories afloat as to the beginning of this fracas, that we shall not attempt to repeat them but suffice to say thatwhile the victim, William Tonyon, who lives just North of this village, was on his %vay boiue from the party at Geo. Schreinef's on Friday r,io: r.i:-.g in company with a young ladv. he was waylaid by two individuals, and while one held the hones the other beat him over the head with a club.cutting and bruising him in so horrid a manner, that for three days his life was dispaired ' of, and at the time of writing,' Tuesday, he is unable to leave his bed. Warrants were issued on Friday afternoon and jnitJnto Ihe hands of .the officers for the apprehension of the jMrrpetratots of this outrage, but up to the time of going to press their whereabouts has not been ascertained. We h'arn. we are sorry to say. that justjee for offend ers of tiiis Kind, has been rather slow in this--village for some. thu# past, and 4o this cun.-e alone can he set dowi; the frequent acts of rowdyism with which our streets have beeu disgraced. Be cause justice could not be obtained through the proper course of the law WJI* the occasion for a Vigilance Con;*- mi ttee in San Francisco some years ago. But'iu this enlightened country and age such things are not neeessayy. We have officers sworn to do their duty, and it is the-duty of the people to see that it is performed. The perpetra tors of this outrage should be brought to justice at whatever cost, and the rowdy element taught that the people have .-rights which they will be V}ade to j-esf{)ect. THE Third Annual Exhibition of the Waukegan Fair will commence on Monday next the 27th inst. and con tinue five days. The two former meet ings of this Fair were not excelled in the State. The most liberal Premiums are offered, and in addition to this the citizens of Waukegan have offered special premiums, making the induce ments far ahead of anything offered by Fairs in the Northwest. Their Premiums on Dairy products are ex ceedingly liberal, the First Premium on Butter being #20. added to which are several Special Premiums amoiin- tingj^to $30 more, making the First Premiu^n on Butter $50. As competi tion is open to the world we hope some of our McHenry county farmers wives w ill compete for this Premium. Let ns show our neighbors of Waukegan that we can appreciate their liberality, and not only attend ihe Fair but com pete for the Premiums offered, am] by a friendly rivalry bring the two coun ties closer together in the bands of friendship. The officers of the Society are sparing uo pains to make it pleasant, and profitable for all who attend, and should the weather prove good, we anticipate there will be a good atten dance from this section, Remember the day of comwenpment, Monday next, the 27th, .
