If the milk .la. from healthy cows, properly attended, to, kept in clean vessels, and in pure air, so that it will not absorb bad odors ©r taints, and then is ehurne«l as soon, as it becomes distinctly add, the butter will keep almost as well without salt as with it. The reason much of the gutter is perishable is that the cream Is allowed to sour too much, or is kept In a foul atmosphere,, or the butter Improperly separated, or the butter im properly packed. Salt, they think, ihould be used rather as a flavor than 0 a means of preserving, as no salt will aave butter that is badly made, * r ' ^ «"s»--** ^ : t • VL. - A1 , £ 1 t, t ft. FRANCISGO, WAGON AND f"- • : • t-fM I; A. r 'The New Haven Paiktdittm says that a mechanic in that city has Invent" «d a new method of propelling1 boats, by wluch he can obtain a speed of five miles an hour without any "wash* fronj the propeller. The boat has two keels parallel to each other and between^ them an air tight bos, built in the "bottom of the boat, into which air is "jferced by meaus of a small steam engine. The compressed air is con veyed to the top of the water under the boat, and allowed to escape on the surface of the water. The resistance ft meets being relied upon for the propulsion of the boat. The two keels are intended to keep the compressed air from being distributed over too great a surface. The Palladium says that several satisfactory trips have been made in the boat (probably with out load,) and that the invention can probably be used to advantage on eanals. Baruum has recently id $20,000 for a living hippopotamus, for his travelling menagerie. This an imal was caught in the river Nile when quite young, and was brought over the Great Desert on the back of a camel, accompanied by a drove of goats to supply it with milk, so difficult is it to get one of these curious animals into Europe alive. Only one has ever reach ed America, although during the last fifteen years Mr. TSarrnim has made a standing offer of #20,000 in gold for a Hdl-grown hippopotamus. The pres ent animal will nearly attain its growth by April next, but being now under size, only $20,000 was paid for it!-- Mxchange. ran & SON The Cheapest and PLACE IN MCHENkY I • h TO BUY • • • • > • ' . , •• .
