Do not fail to go it will be the richest treat of the season. ABOUT sixty couples attended the Party at the Riverside House on Thursday evening last, and all report a good time. THE stores in / this village were all closed on Old Settlers day, from 12 to 2 •'clock, in order that the employees might have a chance to"Re-Une." OUR baby Nine went to Woodstock •a Saturday last, and played a very flue game of Ball with a small Club of that city, the score standing 9 to 8 in favoi •f Woodstock. THE heads of the young men which have been shorn of their locks and pol- .lished off with horse clipping machines resemble an old fashioned hair trunk after many years of travel. S. K. REED, ot the firm of Hnsslett & Reed, Bobk and Job Printers, Chicago, came out to the Old Settlers Meeting and remained over Sunday. lie made our Sanctum a pleasant call. THE insect tribe is quite active, and the bald-headed man is kept bu4y dis puting the squatter-sovereignty of the house-fly, and when they light en him in buzzing pairs he waxeth wroth. IN a notice last week of a thorough bred Short Horn Bull for sale, by W. W. Ellsworth, we stated he was "three years old " It should have read two years. See notice elsewhere. THE fine showers of the-past few day* Have had a wonderful reviving and re freshing influence upon the vegetable world, giving a mere cheering aspect to the weary, half discouraged tiller v»f the soil. Now at the church festivals the sin gle, strawberry drowned in a quart of watery cream thinks how like he is to the degraded oyster who formerly ruled supreme in an ocean of weak •oup. and almost wishes he had uever been born. QUITE a number of the editorial fra ternity of the District were in McHen ry oil Thursday. G. S. Utter and Dr. S. F. Bennett, of the Richmond iGazette, and J. A. Avery of the Waukegan Pat riot, made our Sanctum a cal), and we saw upon the streets O. A. Patridge, of the Waukegan Gazette, an^A. R. Brad bury, or the Woodstock Democrat. They were all here to help the Old Set tlers "Re-Une." THE Old Settlers Association, and more particulary the citizens of McHen- ry, are under great obligations to Hon. E. M. Dennis, of Waukegan, for thp use of Several handsome Banners on Thurs day last. Mr. Dennis took grea£ pains to bring them from Waukegan for our use, and will please accept tho thanks oAhe Old Settlers aiid eur citizeus generally therefor. Ail exchange says: Charcoal Is so necatfary to ihe healthy condition of foi^i that not to provide it for them is to open the way for the appearance •f cholera. It is said that if any ene will put an ear of ript corn into the fire till the grains are well ehfcrred, and then shell off the corn and throw it to his flock, he will see an eagerness devel oped and a healthy condition brought about which make a decide^] improve- All pale combs will beconqte a bright red, that busy song whii|h precedes laying will be heard, and fhe average yield of eggs will be greatly increased. THE Woodstock Dramatic Associa tion are now rehearsing and will bring out on Friday evening of this week, at National Hall, Woodstock, the beautir ful Comedy, in Three Acts, of "Caste." With the reputation of this Amateur Association, and the known popularity of the play, we have no doubt they will receive a rousing benefit. They are to be assisted by Mrs. G. rianafoni, of Milwaukee, who novice on the stage. ? CAPT. E. GRISWOLD informs us that he has leased the Steamer '•Athlete" formerly owned by him, and will bring her to this place to-day (Wednesday) where she will remain the balance of the season, ready to accommodate Picnic or Pleasure parties, and make trips to and from the Lakes when de sired. She can accommodate 100 passengers withour crowding. Persons wishing to engage the boat for any special day should address E. Griswold, McIIenry, 111. WE understand Old Fourth of July has decided to stop at this place, and a urand Celebration will be the result. Judge B. N. Smith, of Woodstock* and Hon. Richard Bishop of this village, will he the Orators of the day, the Horse company from the Prairie will be in attendance, Pack Races, Wheel barrow Racs, Base Ball Game, Steam boat Excursions, and other sports will be the order of the Day. Lovers of fun can look out for one of the gran dest times ever known in the county. TIIE game of Base Ball on Thursday last, between the "Fox River" Club of this village, and the "Typos'1 of Wauk- Vgan, proved a regular Waterloo for the "Typos,*' the game being won by the "Fox Rivers" by a score of38 to 5. From the reputation of the Wankegail ] Club our boys had expected to get scooped, but proposed to give them the best they had at all events, and their easy walk-away fairly astonished tlieii> The game was fairly and impartially Umpired by J. Donnelly, of W oodstock and we believe to I lie entire satisfac tion of both Clubs. Below we append the score of Innings. We hav« heard persons often remark they would like toisee an animal that was really as handsome as are shown in picture?, and a>J we have to say to such is ^o and $6e this animal, owned by Messrs Hicjtox & Abbott, and your wish cam b«t/gratified. No Artist with Pencil arid Brush can excel him iu beauty. No lover of fine Mock should fail to see him. Messrs Hickox ft Abbott de- sarve great praise for bringiug this aininal to the county. E learn that a rich treat is in store fe/ our citizens, which is no less than the appearance at Riverside Iiall, ou Friday evening of tills week, of ihe two favorites of the American Stage, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Lord, who have ap peared iu all tiie principal cities of the l/niou with unequivocal success, receiv ing unbounded applause and the most flattering encomiums from both the press aud the public. They are noAm- atuer performers, but legitimate pro fessional Artists, and lovers of the Com edy can rest assured of a rich treat. A. has revived, studied, rehearsed, and will give to the public next Friday eveuiuer at National Hall, tiie throe act comedy "Caste". Most of the old members remain in the club and the place of the outgoing ones have been supplied by Mr*. G. N. llanaford, late of Milwaukee Wisconsin where she has frequently appeared as an amateur, and Miss Alice Biakeslee of this place well known among us, so the Associa tion is as well prepared as at any for mer occasion to amuse the lovers of ttie Drama. It is now a long time since a play was brought out here, and the public may as w ell prepare for a good square laugh. The Arbitration in the CAM of Barber vs Toles which consumed al most a week in making amends for the carelessness of two clever men during a deal of several years and which they could not settle because they had not the data Anally decided that Toles owes Barber between eight aud nine hundred dollars. Better thus thsm to let the tiling go through court for the people are coming to believe that couit justice is about equal to shearing sheep, tiie lawyer* handling tiie shears and keeping tiie fleece of the litigant. Bees are iu full bloom now but don't stay out long. Of course the demand for hives good but- they don't take well for a boquwt. Business flourishes about as usual for tiie past tour years, that Is not at all. Tiie wool crop does not yet begin to make its appearance in our streets. Probably waits for the return Of R. C. Jefferson. A. R. Murphy has been appointed librarian to the Literary Cirole the books of which may be found mt the store of Murphy & lloy. If any-t-vf your readers are fond of trolling and want a hook that will just charm a ba*s or pickerel to his death let him call ou John Medlar aud ask to see those new ones lie received last week. This is a little out of John's line, but believing that the Waltoui- ans of this county would be able to recognize a good thing when shown them lie sent for a small supply. If y<>4 don't want one, keep away, for you are just as sure to bite when you see it as the flsh in the lake. Mrs. Cora Dickiuson intends on che 9t.li of July to put the Universalist church to some use by opening f%eleot school therein. She iuteud»xo receive all wuo apply without regard to age, sex, color or previous condition of servitude, so the school will be strictly constitutional but it is not likely that it cau be graded much. ,JShe is well known and needs no puffs |u the pa pers. 1 Some country club camft here last Friday aud were Clipped 23 to 6 or thereabouts and on Saturday two baby clubs, (it would be more appropriate to call theos drumsticks) exercised their muscles and lungs on tiie 90 foot diamond. ELAXIA WKt,»n, Barrevillc, Jane 15th 1877. News In our town as scarce *• hen's teeth th^s week. Fanners report prospects very favor able for an immense crop of potatoes this season. Look out for Ed Vasey's new buggy, or rather the Old one made over just as good as new. R. A. Auckland's Cheese factory is again in operation. Wesly, who has charge of it, we are told thoroughly un- ticrstauds his business. Ladies in need of anything In the line of Dry goods will do well to call aud examine J. W. Church last Suuday evening was very largely at tended. the entertainment consisting 4f seng's, reading, Declamations, &c„ %nd under the management of Mrs. Madole passed oft in a quiet and pleas ing manlier. We do think there is nothing that teuds more to elevate the Morals of our young people than these exercises. Give us more of the same style. BISMARK. G R E E N W O O D EDITOR PLAIXDKALKR:-- "The feathery foliage has broadened its leaves And June, with its beautiful mornings and eves, It's magical atmosphere, breexeaand blooms, It's woods all delicious with thousand per fumes, First horn of the Summer--spoiled pet of the year, Jtme, delicate queen of the season is here." Notwithstanding tne many sudden and extreme changes atmospherically, from heat to cold, trom wet to dry and vice versa, vegetation is crowding for" ward very rapidly. The com crop which, until within the past few days has borne a very feeble and sickly ap pearance is new beginning to have a more strong and healthy complexion.-- Potatoe bugs arc doing finely aud prom ise to be more than an ordinary crop. Prominent on the list of old settlers of this part of the county, is the old Saw Mill owned by Mr. Toles, which was built in 1837, which Is still in run- uing order aud capable of doing as good work as when 20 years younger.-- Mr. Toles is now daily engaged iu turn ing out oak, ash and black Walnut lum ber, which looks decidedly old fashion. Neighbor Jones is the owner, if not the possessor, of a swarm of bee# whose aspirations educationally, «eems to be of the higher order. Not content with the new home furnished them, they left aud took possession of the cornice of the school building, not even deign ing to condescend to enter the primary department first, (fearing probably that the present teacher would sour on them) they ascend at once to the high#r grades. What an inducement there will be for those young ideas to climb up higher. Jones, you had better have that swarm of bees patented and sell Queens. Mr. Henry Baldwin has returned home from his school at Valporaise^ lnd., on account of Iris eyes failing him. J. A. Baldwin has elostd hi» school labors at Crystal Lake and has been en gaged as principal of the public school at Genoa, Wis. That they a»e fortu nate in securing his services as a firit. class teacher his wide spread reputa tion will fully cQufiim. The Mutual Protection Association, (horse owners)-will meet &t the Hall iu Greeuweod,ou Tuesday evening^ July 3d. One object of the meeting will be to take into, consideration the proprie ty of disbanding and dividing ihe funds. EVE CRYSTAL LAKE. EDITOR PLAINDEALER.--The Con gregational Sabbath School of this place held a Picnic in Carpenters Grove last Saturdar. A pleasanr time Is re ported by those who attended. Our Public School, which for the last two years has been under the charge of J. A. Baldwin, closed on Friday of last week. At the close of thV School he was presented with a picture, which to hi in in after years will uo doubt be one of the choicest of gifts and one which will remind him of many a happy time spent in this place. It was a group of his Scholars. It is seldom that a teach er leaves a School carrying with him the love and respect of the scholars and patrons of the School as does Mr. Bald win. Success attend him and may he live long to impart unto others knowl edge. « The regular meeting of the Literary Society was held last Thursday Eve. The License question was discussed by J. A. Baldwin and J. A. Sheldon deci ded in favor of the affirmative. That is that the licensing of Saloons is detri mental to the best interests of any place. We don't know what "Ike" will set him at first, perhaps will send hin^ out to sell those Tiger Hay Rakes, Otice Wilson ^*as the barber polls nailed fast each side of the door where Henry Chlvillion moved out. "Ote" Is not entirely new at the business, and he will give you the best he has. We notice that Milan Hicks has his new shop completed and has moved in his benches and tools. He has the nicest shop there is in these parts, aud his slock is complete. Look in and see now neat he looks. Who says Richmond is gone to the shade on account of no license? Last Saturday night was enough toconvince any fair-minded man that It is all a hoax, for we bad a very large crowd and our merchants were pleased with the trade they had. Henry Cheviillon lias moved his Bar- bea Shop In J. Cluney's house, lately owned by Thomas Strang. Henry has got. settled and looks nice and clean In his new quarters and he will give you a good cut and a clean shave at any time. Give him a trial.aml be convinced. We were not aware in these late dart that we had an Elijah. But It seems we have and Iu Richmond too, and in passing from this world In his firey chariot, he cast his mantel on the new contribution of the Richmond coluiuu to the Woodstock Sentintt und has en dowed him with a portion of his knowl edge, and we expect to see a sptcy col umn. We hope he will not be like Elisha aud send two she bears to eat us up for this little squib. We are glad to welcome him as one of us squibs. Eureka! Eureka! Eureka! The asso ciate editor of the Richmond Gazette says in answer to our Item of last week in which-we asked "who was that tall, slim, smooth-faced individual that stood in the alley one dark night not long since as a guide to the thirsty ?" "probably the PLAINDEALER corres pondent." Now "Santa," we find our mistake, we thiuk he had a beard on Iiis face and as we don't want a profeb- sioual gentleman to own that he him self was the Individual, we will play it was us. Thinking the matter over as we write, you remind us of a sports man who took his bow and went into tiie woods shooting. He apied a ring dove among the branches of an oak, and Intended to kill it. He drew the bow to hi* shoulder, and took his aim accordingly, but just as he was going to loose the arrow, an adder, which he had trod upon under the grass, st ung him so painfully in the leg that he was forced to quit hi? design and threw his bow down inapassiun. The poison im mediately infected his blood, aud his whole body began to mortify, which when he perceived, he could not help owning to be Just. "Fate," said he, "has brought destruction upon me while I was contriving the death of another."
