Smith & Snyder will imme- diatelj' erect a dwelling on. the lot op posite J. Draper's residence, which they will rent, while we learn that L. Bonslet has bought the beautiful lot on the corner South of the creek bridge, known as the Covey lot. where he will erect this fall a handsome residence.-- At present there is not an empty house in the village, and a few mere dwell ings is just what we need. WE would call the attention of our readers to the new advertisement of Scott & Co, Hatters, Chicago, to be found on the first page of this paper. They are the leading dealers of this kind in the Northwest, having two stores, 192 Madison Street, and 123 Lake Street, where you can at all times find Hats, Caps, Furs, &c.. of th** latest styles, best quality and at the lowest prices. With his known business push, such a result may reasonably be loniwifor. WE saw a few days since a Fruit Picture, lately Painted by Miss Clara Owen, and it seems to us that she ex cels all her former efforts, which is saying a good deal, as site has pic tures that are hard to beat. The pic ture in question was the centerpiece at one of the Wedding tables at the late marriage of her sister, aud represents, Xpples, Peaches, Grapes, with Flowers and Vines twined around. It is cer tainly as fine a Fruit Picture as we ever saw, and does great credit to Miss Owen as an Artist. We also saw sev eral specimens of her Painting, both Portrait and Landscape, which-would be hard to beat by the most noted Artists. THE Bhtter and (Cheese Factory Meeting on Friday evening last was almost a failure, whether for lack of interest or some other ennse we are un informed. We were unavoidably absent ourself. but are informed that but few of those who should take an interest in the matter, were present. Mayor Barclay of Elgin, was present, and ex plained what he WHS willing- to do provided our citizens.Would take hold of the matter. We hope our citizers will yet wake up to the importance of this matter, aud by a united'effort se cure tlie location of a Factory here. These Works were btillt some four years ago and were run the ' first year by what was known as tjie Union Com pany, and was as that time looked upon by other institutions Qf the- kind in the oounty. as "Small fry.^ And now, in less than three years all these high- toned Arclideaconed institutions have gone into bankruptcy, while the little Pickle Works at McHenry has been con stantly increasing their business and seuding out their goods, and to-day have a capacity for manufacturing and a reputation as to goods second to no institution of the kind in the West. One year ago the Works were leased from the stockholders by Messrs Curtis A Walker, of this town, who have since been constantly adding to the buildings until now thby have a Processing Building 80x40, Vinegar Works 60x24, Bottliug Room 30x30, aud an Assorting Room 80x300, all connected, making a building over 500 feet in length, almost under one roof. Besides these a few rods distance is a Cooper Shop which belongs to the Factory, where all the barrels, casks aud kits used are made. They new employ In and around the Factory atiii Cooper Shop twentv-four hands, J. F. Welj-h being the "'Boss" Pickle man, aud we do not hesitate to sa3r that lie has few equals aud no su periors in this line. The rfottliug de partment Is under tlie supervision df Win. Wynne, who understands his busi ness in all its departmeuts, aud is now putting up as fine a lot of Bottled Goods as can be found in the United States. " *\ 1 " , / As regards ttie business being done this year wo found tjhat tiiwy had filled fifty tubs with cucumbers, which aver aged over 500 bushels to the tub, had bottled and shipped over 500 cases of bottled sroods, having how five hands constantly at work to fill the orders daily received, had just commenced on Tomatoes, keeping one man boiling and straining all tlie time, Which will be made into Catchup, while their Onions aud Cauliflower which have just commenced to come iu will be immense. They are now processing twenty-live 40 gallon barrels of Pickels eve fry twenty-four hours, and are shipping a car load of Vinegar anil Piekels every day. Last waek they- shipped $230J- worth of"Viuegar alone. In the Vinegar department thejr have twenty-tour Generators, aud the expense uf running the. Vlnegap room is £roin #75 to per day., They manufacture tw*» kinds, one from High wines-and one from eider, and bot li are equal to "the best 0 be found in the nttarkcU ... M ,! It will taus be saen that the McHenry Pickle works will compare favorably with any in t.hd e()untry, not only in quality of g(VOdsbtTt airtount of bu^fness done. Messrs (Jurtis &. Wai.ke,r deserve great praise, for the fact that every thing tliey use is of heme manufacture, lionsequentlv the institution is a be he fir te our town iu more ways thah one . We have A 'Sample ft"' this office which we Invite farmers to call and see. W. S. Tipton, of Tennes see,"in speaking of it says; "The kernel Is very large and compact, of a btiglit straw color aud extrehiely hard; the quality of bread made from its flour is equal to that made from opr best Ten^ ncssee white wheat. It is of a very hardy nature aud uot liable t<* rust.--> We can furnish stoote grown from a single grain, with 18 to 34 stalks, and the heads on each stalk measuring on. an average, from 7 to 9 inches iu length average graius to the heaj|, 40; and nearly every grain will measure one- half inch iu'length by the rule, and the average cVose to that. It is wit lout doubt the finest wheat in the United States, aud the greatest curiosity in seed ever seen. It »4s a "bearded" wheat, and can be sown either in the* fall or Spring. Where the climate is not too cold it should be sown iu the fall." The seed of this wheat was im ported from Valporaiso, South Ameri ca, three years ago, and has this season produced 63J bushels on one-half acre. It is Indeed a curiosity, a seed of wheat one-half in^h iu length, and piump and perfect iu every particular.
