There were very few things that the late Commodore Vaudef-bilt had set his mind upon obtaining that lie <Jtd: not obtain at some price. But it was; equally characteristic of him that he properly estimated the value of what; he wanted, and what, in the minds of! many, might be regarded as reckless ness, was nothing but the result of shrwd calculation! on his part. Tti&folloxving Is one of the best Il lustrations: When the several .rail-, *** road tr^ik lines were cited before th«| New York Assembly at Albany to te«-< = tify in regard to certain freight ring; operation?, the general freight agents of the respective roads were deputed to appear as expert witnesses^ The general freight agent of the Erie road being absent, his assistant was sent?in his stead; he was a young man, brought up from a boy in the "employ of the Erie, and thoroughly conversant with the intricacies of railroad freighting. The Witnesses weie called upon in their order of Coming, but from neither could the committee obtain an intelli gible answer or explanation till the young a^sStfrrtT from the Erie took the ; stamir In a clean and concise manner /"'he stated his propositions, answered the questious of the committee, stood the cross-fire of counsel, and so far un raveled the snarl thae the committee, accepting Jiis statement, dismissed the case. ' On his return to the Delevan House the young man received a note from Commodore Vanderbilt requesting an interview. The young man responded. On entering the Commodore's room the.following scene occurred: Commodore Vanderbilt--"Sit down, : young man. How long have you been In the employ of the Erie?" Young Man--'Four years, sir." Co mm odore--^Yf hat. do they pay you?" . Answer--""tfive thousaod dollars a year." Cnmrriodore--'Xoung man, I Will give you ten thousand dollars a year and give you a contract for ten years." The young man declined; said he had been with the Erie so m^any years it was home to him, and be did not caw to leave" On his return to New York lie relat ed the interview to the President of the Erie, who replied by saying, "We will give you ten thousand dpllars, but cannot make a time contract." A few days afterward he Received a second! note from Vanderbilt; he called, and told him what the Brie had done.-- ' I will give you twelve thousand dol lars a year." said the Commodore.-- The young man still declined, but re ported the interview to the President of the Erie, who replied, "We will give you twelve thousand dollars." AT week later another letter came from Vanderbilt, which the young man ans wered hi-pe^on. He told the Commo dore what had transpired. "I will give you fifteen thousand dollars," said the Commodore. This was de clined, and, in turn, the interview wa9. reported at the Erie headquarters, andi Eris advanced to fifteen thousand doll lars. The Commodore sent for him M fourth time, heard his statement, then, striking his cane on the floor, yelled out; "Young man,Til give you twenty thousand dollars a year for ten years, and sign a contract for the same." •'Make out your papers," was the cool reply; and that young man is to-day, next to Win. H. Vanderbilt, the "vir? tual manager of the New York Ceh^ tral and Hudson River Railroad. Hit position is general freight agent, and his name 5s Kutter.
