Mr. Beadle may fairly be regarded as the w ri ter of some of the most at tractive literature of the day. "/West ern Wilds" opens with the commence ment of the author's roving li'fe, in 1S68, aud accompanies him through all his many thousands of miles of] travel on foot, 011 horseback, by canoe, dug out, and wagon train, and every!means of locomotion known to civilized and uncivilized man, among savage Indians and no less savage w hite men, upon tours of observation iu the wilds of mountain, plain a^»d desert^ ami \hrough adventures whose recital cause the heart to 'throb, aud the blood to leap, with accelerated momentum, aud brings the.record dowu to the death of Brigliitm "Young, and the#" precarious forlune.iOf his tottering hierarchy. Some of the noteworthy adventures are iu the vari ed experience of the author, but more were gathered from the lips nf«uoiits, hunters, rangers, and the meu and women upou. the frontier with whom he'eame iu contnct,,and they make up a series of hap3 aud mishaps, comic, tngic and dramatic, which will be read aud re-read by American firesides for many y^ars to come, and always with interest. "Weltern Wilds" treats of tlie pecu liar institutions of tiie Mormon settle ments; the habits and customs of vari ous Indian tribes; the tsials, dangers aud superstitious of prospectors; mining life, w,ith a glance at its perils, profits and disappointments; exciting adventures ot well-known scouts; the Morman war; tlie Mountain Meadow Massacre, foi4 which John Lee was tried, found guilty and shot; the life of General Custer, the dead prophet with a sketch of his life and numerous here sies; besides au ai rav of other facts, incidents and happenings.
