IK our notice of the burning of Jerry Sherman's ho .we last week, we made a mistake In the amount of Insurance.-- It^hould have read "Insured for 1400." As will be seen by a card published elsewhere, the amount has been paid in full by C. H. Morey, Agent of the merican Insurance Company. |w :'i*' m'v> m >%-' ».'• -"t I.KCTURK COUlMlt A number of our leading tiave organized a Literary Association and arranged for a course of lectures, in order to be up with the times and give the people of McHenry and vi cinity an opportunity to hear some of the best lecturers now on the platform without being obliged to go to the city, at a grea| expense, in order to do so. This is a worthy enterprise, and should command the support ot all our people. The first lecture will be de livered on Tuesday evening. Feb. 11th, by Mrs. Ann Eliza Young, 19th wife of the late Brigliam Young. She gives one of the most pleasing and instruc tive lectures ft will ever be the good fortune of our readers to hear. Born und reared a Mormon, and never until just before she left Brlgham having heard the tenets of any other religious faith, she is prepared to handle her subject "In and Out of Utah," and give the true history o'f this great blot up on the fair escutcheon of our Nation, better than any Other living lectur**- Oi.clisriuiug presence, and a good speaker, it will be worth the price of a season ticket to hear her lecture. She will.exhibit from the platform six life size portraits of leading Mormons.-- We advise all who wish to hear this talented lady to geMickete III advance and go early as we predict our largest audience room will fail to accommo date tl»e crowd. On Feb. 18th, Gen. ICilpatrlck, the dashing C'avalrj' Commander will take ns with liiiu ou that ever memorable and glorious campaign. "Sherman'# March to the Sea." Of tills lecture Gen. Grant said, "a great lecture, in tensely interesting and entrancing." Those who are best capable of judg ing say there is no other lecturer who can so stir the blood of au audience as this famous Cavalryman, lie <?on't tell you the story of that March, but he takes yob with him, and you ?ee the charging legions, and the flashtug sabres; hear the tramp of the horses and roil of musketry. You are start led by the deep boom, boom of the ar tillery, and at tl^e end of a two hou^s lecture you feel as though yon had gone through the experience of a life time in a few minutes, so rapidly lias time flown under thft spell of tola burning eloquence. Next comes Campradoie G. > W^n. Bailey, with two lectures on Cliinaan^ the Chinese, delivered in costume.-- Mr. Bailey has with him a large col lection ofChlnese curiosities and . will exhibit them, and illustrate hli lect ure by them. Prof. McCaudless gives a grand exhi bition of **06108 of American Scenery," Illustrated with the Stereoptlcan.-- But we will speak of the last three en tertainments more at length in a fu ture issue. Suffice It to say that a Season Ticket to the entire five enter tainments can be had for the small amount of One Dollar, and we very much misjudge our people if the house is not filled I every night. to it* fullest capacity THE Board of Trustees have had six ^Ladders made, 24 feet long, for the use of the Corporation, two of which are to be kept at tho Depot end of the village two near the Post Office and two in the old town. " FARM TO RENT. A farm of about three hundred acres situated two miles Southwest of "Mc Henry. Is in a good state of eultiva- fe; iCt. vî isdS'&Sk ... .1 .jrfc 1- . V V:.; '•ffv f ALGONQUIN* On Thursday afternoon a flying visit to Algonquin, and found that enterprising little burg pursuing the even tenor of her way, and not the least disturbed by the various ques tion! and isms that are constantly agi rating the public mind, but content to let the world " wag as she will," and all her citizens follow their own busi- atid pleasure a* to them seems fit, so long as they keep Within tho bounds of law and order. Since our last visit there h«* been some change In the business of the village^ the most important of which is at the Hotel, which Is now kept by the old Algonquin landlord, Charles Pingrey, and all are agreed that he Is the"bo8s" in that line, and that the Algonquin Hotel never was kept better than when under his care. We can as sure the traveling public und all others whose business may call them to that town, that they will be well taken care of by Mr. Pingrey. where everything Is made as near the comforts of a home at this popular Hotel as it Is possible to be. We next called at tlte Brick Mill of Geo. Marshall, where we found them up to their eyes In business, and they I informed <ut they were obliged to run their Mill night and day to koep up with the demands of their many cus tomers. They have one of the finest little Flouring Mills we were ever in, and the quality of the fiour manufac tured is such that it needs but to be used once to make it if} demand ever after. .. We also visited the River Mills, where we found Iu the proprietor our whilom acquaintance George Peacock, who was also full of bnst less, and he informed us that he was obliged to run the Mill to its fullest capacity to ac commodate its many customers. The citizens of Algonquin and viciuity are fortunate lit having two such good Mills in that section, and that they are appreciated is evidenced by their large and increasing busiuess. At J. D. Fiirgeson's we found Johnny as happy as a clam in high water, which is a sure indication that trat^e was good, and Indeed, we cannot see vyhy it should not be, as he has as fine 4 stock of goods as cau be found !u the county. Helui & Peter, the old and reliable hardware firm, and lumber dealers, can be found at their old stand,- and from appearances busiuess was iu a flourish ing condition. They are a well known' and reliable tiHi*, and keep a stock of good* iu their line second to uone. We just dropped in at the Black smith Shop of P.N. Wollaver, who occupies the Brick Shop near the Bridge, and found him head over ear* in work, and he l»ifonne*l ~t*iE 'fha. Mr the past year he had had all that he could do, which Is the natural conse quence for a good workman, and all are agreed that Wollaver has no super ior in that section. Here we had the pleasure of meeting that man of almost historical fame, J. Sherwood, the best Auctioneer iu the Northwest, and a mail whose hand we always like to grasp. ** Jim " gave us to uuderstaud that the Auction busl- ue'feS Is good, aud that during twenty- six working tlays in one month, we think it was Dfcembcr, he had twenty- four Auctions, which goes to prove tlifet the services of a good man are always In demand, no matter in what business. We of course could uot leave town without calling at the Model Drug Store of Dc. W. A. Nason. We found the Doctor in, and while enjoying one of his splendid Havanas had the pleas ure of looking over his splendid little store, full of goods In his line, and all arranged lu a manner that could not fail to please the eye of the most fas- tideous. The Doctor is somewhat of a newspaper writer, and one can always speud an hour or two witli-him In the most pleasant and profitable manner. Time and space will uot permit us to mention the many friendly and famil iar faces which me met. but will speak of a few facta of local interest which we learned. We learned that the Congregational Church, under the Pastorship of Rev. Mr. Wray, Is in a most prosperous con dition, and that the congregation is rapidly increasing under his ministry. He is said to be a young man of mora than ordinary ability, of liberal Ideas, preaching the Gospel as he understands it. and by his gentlemanly manner* and pleasiug address is winning hosts of friends among both saints and siunera That his ministration in the future may be the most successful la the wish of vours truly, v We also Earned that the Public School, • under the continued care of Prof. Skinner, was in the most pros perous condition, giving tho' utmost satisfaction to both scholars and pat rons. We heard a rumor that C. Roehl was married or about to be, wo don't re member whMi, btlt as we promised uot to say a word ab>out !t we won't. We're mum! - .. . . We had intended to visit the farm of P. Mitchell, who Jives a few miles out of the village; hut time and .the con dition of the roads would not allow us to do so at that time, hut we shall make it our busiuess to do so at no distant day. We learn he has the finest lot of full aud lialf blood Holstein cattle to be found in the county. He makes Ibis breod a specialty, nd those who " - . i have seen them say they are indeed beauties. When we see them we will give our readers a full report. We called at the Butter and Cheese* Factory but found the manager, Mr. J M. Garrison, ont, and after refreshing ©urseJf with a cup of Buttermilk, left ©ur compliments, expecting to call again before we left, but wero unable to do so. John Kugel. Cabinet Mafcor and Furniture dealer, who was burneiTout a few mouths since, has sold his house and lot. and we learn inteud* moving West early in the Spring. He is one of the best mechanics iu this section, and the citizens of Algonquin will regret his decision to go away. Our stay In Algonquin was necessari ly short, but nevertheless we added several names to our list, and hope In the future to have th& local happenings In that section more regularly in our coHxmna. TH« BONCOROIA MtflNC Ot.m. This is the name of a society lately organized and Incorporated In our neighboring town Johnshurgh. The object of the same !s: The cultivation of music, especially singing and band music. Quite a number of the young men forming the club are considerably advanced in music, which leaves no doubt In regard to the success of the undertaking. The services of Mr. C. P. Waite have been secured M band taaeher. Under his able management they are getting along fast. The vo- oal department is under the leadership of Mr. J. W. F re und. As most of the members ar» singers of some experi ence, their singing is equal to that of institutions ot several years standing. We understand they will for the first time appear in public in a Concert for the benefit of the Club some time next week. The assistance of Prof, R, l>. Scott and family, and also of tho Mc Henry Cornet Band has be^en secured which promises to make it one of the best, if not the best of the season.-- Further particulars will be atimuutced it|our next ls*ue. KlehoMMtd High ftnltool. The lecture of T. V. Eddy, of Key stone, before^the High School, on Monday evening, was an able effort. His theme was.-A Search for Light." The subject as announced would hardly conyey an Idea of the lecture, which treated of Republican institutions as they exist in the United States. Uis conclusions were that we possess the best Government. on the face of the earth, and, as a people, stand at the head Of civilized races. He believed the perpetuity of our free Institutions depends upon Nthe Intelligence and Virtue of our people. The lecture was clothed in fine language, and was at times r#*tfy eloquent. It Is hoped we may hear from Mr. Eddy agaiu. The Mcxt lecture of the course, next Monday evening will be by Rev. M. A. Bacon, of Dundee. .. iP"-!'!- N, • : ^ ; BARREVILLB.
