I t is needless to say that every effort has been exer-y ted to make the fair a success in every particular, and the prospects for the fair are becoming brighter each day. The farmers are apparently more in terested than on any former occasion of the Kind in the county'and if we judge from indications our fair will compare favorably with any in North ern Ill inois, We would urge upon our people the Importance of attending because only with their hearty co-ope- rations can they expect that success which should attend all such exposi tions. Those who wish to enter any stock or articles of any kind should remember that there is no charge ex cepting on trials of speed. Should the weather prove favorable we shall expect to see a big crowd of the old soldiers and their friends on that occasion. Wfihad intended to ^ive a notice this week of t t ie amount of work done at Nichols 'Paint Shop since January 1st, 1880, but owing to the lateness of going to press and the crowd of other matter, we are obliged to omit i t until next week. OWING to the .unfavorable weather, the party at Qratul Hall last week wa< not very largely attended, but never theless all who were there enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent. We shall expect to see i t repeated soon, under more favorable circumstances. JACOB SNYI»ER left at this office one day last week a branch from a Plum tree, about eighteen inches long.that contained thirty-one large egg Plums. This we consider a large yield, ami one hard to beat, l ie informed us that he raised this season about forty bushels of the same variety. Greenback Meeting. Hon. A. J . Please make sucu calculations this week that will enable you to attend the fair next week. If you have a just pride in the good name of your noble county, you caunot afford to let your fair be a failure, and 1 feel quite sure you will not. We have in our county some of the best breedeis of cattle, horses, poultry and hogs to be found anywhere, and I have no doubt they will be out in force to sus tain the fame and good name already acquired. Other counties are invited and expected to compete with us in the various departments. I wish this my last appeal through the press, to whom I am under obligations for kind ly courtesies, could be made to arouse an enthusiasm that would ensure a grand success. We may and should have an excellent show of dairy prod ucts this year, being one of the banner counties of this great and growing bus iness. A propitious season has given us bountiml crops, so that Agricultural Hall estn and will doubtless present the best exhibition of grains, , fruits and Vegetables we have ever had. Lovers o>f the beautiful and useful will fi l l our unexcelled, new, fine art , floral and fabric Hall to overflowing, I trust. Tradesmen, mechanics and merchants, show the people what you are doing. Implement dealers will make a grand display. Amusements will be inter spersed through the last three days of the fair. Trumbull, Democrat; Cullom Republican, and Gen. Healy,of Roches ter, X. Y.. Green backer, are invited to make short addresses. Speed trials, military drill , ball and ride shooting, and various other amusements will occur on every day but the first . Come then for more than one day, since the small sum of fifty cents will be good for the whole t ime. We ought to seli 4000season tickets, in addition tosingle entry tickets 25 cents. We have been to considerable expense in building a new and excellent half mile track ami other improvements; part of this has been generously paid by voluntary offerings, the balance and most of our other revenues must come from the people at large. Come then to the fair and see what is on exhibition, laugh at the amusements, let off your surplus political g«s4 kindly greet old friends and make new acquaintances, in a word, come for profit , pleasure and a general good social t ime, both on the grounds and around the bountiful tables of the line new dining hall . That al ofour readers may know of the estimation in whiefc the Van Amhurgh Show is held by the ~pi>eSR and public, we copy the following from the Burlington, Iowa, Haivkeye of Juno 10, 1880: "Yesterday was circus day again, and notwithstanding that this makes the third mammoth show that has visited Burlington within a li t t le over a month, a large number of people were in the city from the surrounding coun try to see the street p* r i"le. hear the music and take in the show. There is always a fascination about "sawdust and spangles" that draws a crowd, that even a first-class Fourth of July cannot compete with. Perhaps the reason tha l there is always something among the many features of a first-class show that pleases all classes of society and all kinds of people. The many curios it ies in the menagerie interests one class, the beautiful trained horses an other. the ring performances and clown others. and the crowd and rush all others who caunot find anything else to please therif. In fact, perhaps there is only one feature prominent in many shows that does.not Experience ensures success in prosecut ing contested entries and Mineral Land claims before the General Land Otlice- Long practice gives success in securing pensions. Presbrey & Green. Attor neys, 509 Seventh street. Washington D. C. have had long experience in all branches of practice before the Depart ments. Parties having buisness should address them (enclosing stamp) for ii - formation. 7IIARLES OWEN , son of E. M. Owen, of this village, has received the recom mendation from the examining Board to Congressman Shervvin for the Naval Cadctship from this District , and will undoubtedly receive the ap pointment. This is a just recognition of a worthy young man, and lie has the congratulations of his many friends in this village for his success. We shall have more to say in relation to i t as goon a« h<* ivcp;v?e h;-= appointment. INVENTORS employing attornies fa miliar with practice in the Patent ^.i . . , , , . . shows that does.not please anyone, Uilice, rarely fail ot securing patents i and that is the peanut vender, who is about the only individual who has no friends. While Van Amhurgh has this curiosity with his menagerie, he keeps i t under control and does not let i t run wild in the cirrus." "Yes Mr. Frost, the old reliable circus manager' who has braved the storms of competition for years and j l ias always come out successful, was j here vestorday with Van Amburgh's ; show, and he had the good luck to j present his show to many of the eiti- l /ens of Burlington and Des Moines county. "As to the details of the day's pro gramme, the most truthful tit i i i>r that can be said of this circus is that the managers present everything, in the street, in the menagerie and in the ring that they advertise, an honesty few shows are guilty of. The proces sion was better than many expected; hue this circus does not put the best on the outside The menagerie fil ls the bill in every respect, from the big ele phant down to the baby monkey, many new and rare specimens in the animal kingdom being in the collection. The i circus part is good and well worth th» j price of admission to f 'ose who enjov j such performances. Two features of thi« part of the show is worthy of spec ial mention. Mr. Win. Showleg, the bareback somersault equestrian and dashiiig hurdle rider, has ho peer, con sidering his a;re, while he performs many new feats. While Andrew Gall- net, the cannon ball manipulator^shows wonderful strength and muscle. "But the great feature of this show that commends itself to the public, is the manner in which i t is conducted. Every attache performs his duty ii: a quiet way and does not seem to take special delight in annoying everyone; and for this alone, not to say a word' about many other good'things, we can heartily recommend the show to the public wherever i t goes." Such an endorsement Is regarded by us as a sufficient guarantee that we are to have a really great show in Mcllenry on Monday. September 13. WOODSTOCK -JEIJITOR PLAINDKALER:--When we read the leader in the Sentinel of last, week introducing "A candidate of our otn," to the people of McHenry county, we involuntarily fouud ourself re peating "Music ti l th charms to tame "a savag«," "To ren<t a rock" Ac. Here we paused, nor thought to follow the couplet farther, but when on the following day wo learned that Shir- win had beeri here aud that the "candi date of our own" had collapsed, the balance of the figure came unbidden as i ts predecessor and was complete '-And split a Cabbage." And thus endeth the bright visions of the "Candidate of our own" for the present. So mote i t be. Our boys in blue came back from Rockford highly pleased with their treatment while encamped in that beautiful city, and from the reports in regard to the boys behavior the officers of Company MG" and the citizens of Woodstock may well be proud of the record they made for themselves. Thus far the boys have had no financial en couragement and as most of them are short of funds and dependent upon small income for expenditures, our cit izen might do well to give them a lift . I t might be "Breau cast upon the waters" Wednesday is our County Conven tion for the triple purpose of nomina ting county officers and sending dele gates to Congressional and Senatorial Conventions. Next week is Fair week and the man woman or child, who stays away with out good excuse neglccts a duty due the enterprise. We may have been mistaken about the Board running the victualing department but we are glad we mentioned i t , because we thought we had reliable Information thereof and because i t gives lis an opportunity again to Icall the attention of the people, bv way of explanation, to the importance of patronizing their county Fail , l t lsdue the best interests of the county, as well as to the managers who have made, are stil l making and will cantiuue to make every effort within their power to make the com ing Fair a profitable season to all who shall attend and to every class of in- dustly. WAUCONDA- EDITOR PI.AINDKAI.KR The week just past has been remarkable chiefly for dampness. I t has rained with an ease and "copiousness," (good word) not common this Summer. A. stood deal ©flow land hay and not a lit t le ' (lax has sudered in consequence, and the owners of threshing machines are all fortunate in not knowing how to swear, as well as being the best ma tured people in the world, for it has knocked their l i t t le calculations square ly in the head. Another eflect the rain has produced would naturally suggest profanity. It has made a fearful mud lioie of our main street. Those two ornamental ponds, so kindly left in front of Har rison's drug store, are well fi l led, and the unsijrhtly and dangerous gullies running from Mr. Doers ' cross walk, on both sides of the street down to the foot of the hill has washed out another six inches or more. A skillful driver with a stead$?horsc can drive up to Mr. Weir 's landing, or to Hill & Bar ker 's, but a novice would be very likely to turn over. Now we don't pretend to say that the blame for this disgrace ful state of things should attach to Mr. Maiman or to Mr. MoLain, or to Mr. Harrison, or fo any other one member of the board of trustees; but i t seems to us that as a body they are the ser vants of tha people, elected to carry out the wishes of the friends who voted for them, and that such being the fact, the body of men. not any one itidivid tial member, known as the Trustees, are derelect In duty. On Monday afternoon last, the 23rd. Dr. R. Ludham, of Chicago, assisted by Dr. W. A. Barker, added another to their long list of delicate and success ful surgical operations, by relieving Mrs. H. B. Burritt of an ovarian tumor weighing nearly thirty-four pounds. Mrs. Burritt , the doctors and a very large circle of friends, all unite in con gratulations, for Mrs. B. is now consid ered entirely out of danger, and is mak ing rapid strides toward'complete re covery. T'he lawn festival, held In Mr, Edwf. Wood's beautiful grounds on Tuesday evening last for the benefit of Rev. Mr. Adron, was quite largely attended by young people from this village, who report, a very enjoyable t ime. The young men, some of them, have had a good ileal of fun over the care less remark of one of the ladies pres ent, to the eflect that "musty lemonade was good enough for Wauconda Pukes" which remark, we take i t , was much more expressive than elcjgaut. Since the introduction of the new and perfected machinery. Uncle Daviil Oak's Cider Mill has become more popular than ever as a resort for the thirsty lovers of apple juice. The fame of the mill and the fame of *t.he owner have readied out encli year until noit", with extra help he is having just all 'he can do. The "barret of cider, donated to the soldier* last week was a thougJkt-. ful mark of respect to the boys in bhie a which we are assured was keenly apr predated by the recipients. The season of the year has cott\£ when one man can amuse a dbz en by claiming to be able to cut bind aud shock five acres of corn in a day, "for money." These plienominal corn cutters use a guyasticutus which they strap to their hiud leg like the spur on a rooster. Kitlier polit ical questions are not much discussed and interest in politics is not l ively or else yonr correspondent has failed to strike the right crowd. We notice that the county comi ".i t tee recommends that a caucus be held on Friday, September 10th, at 3 o'clock p. M. But we presume no noticcs will be posted and that three or tour who are in the ring will get together quiet ly some time Friday evening or Sat urday morning aud'make up the slate as usual. We would give a good deal to see a regular old fashioned, weil at tended, interesting caucus in Wauconda. I t would be a novelty indeed. Among the guests of the Pratt House who are here for pleasure and recrea tion are Mr. John Myers.of the "Palace of PharmacyChicago, with his wife ar.d daughter. Also Miss Il ise, of Chi cago.
