THE Elgin Envoy is the name of a nsw paper which takes the place of the iSlgin Dollar New*. It presents a neat uppearauce typographically, and is a very readable paper. It will be issued •e ml-weekly. OLD SANTA CLAUS has arrived at Colby Bros with a tremendous stock and great variety of elegant Presents that will make glad the hearts of old and young. Call and shake hands with the old gentleman. A VERT pleasant little invited party assembled at the Parker House 011 Thursday evening last, and with good music enjoyed a good social time until the "we sma hours." It was such a time as none could fail to enjoy. ORSON BUOBEK has broken up keep ing house; and, witli his family, is boarding with Wm. Madgett, four miles south-east of this village. Geo. Owen has moved to the house lately occupied-by Btigbee, while C. HP. Waitc 4^etipies the one vacated by Owen. THE arrangements for the New Yew's Party at |0rand Hall, are all completed,an& eterything Indicates a good ok) fashioned time. The Ger mania Band, J. Castello, Leader, will furnish the music, and no pains will be spared to make it pleasant for all. No one will fail of having a royal good time who attends. Miss MAGGIE CLARK is reported quite s Ick w i thJthe d I ph the rla. AT the time of going to press, Wednesday morning, our Wauconda correspondence has failed to reach us. EAKL WIGHTMAN, sou of John Wightman, of Clienoa. 111., Is spending the Holidays with his uncle, H. E* Wightman, of the Riverside House. IF you love fun do not fail 'o see the •'Irish Diamond,"1 and the siile-split- ting Farce, by the Macready Comedy Company, at Riverside Hall, this even ing. ' WE understand the "Boys" have organized a Minstrel Troupe In this village. Look out for some fun when they aunounce t^heir first entertain ment. WE learn that parties from Dundee ere here on Mouday last looking for a sight to build a Cheese Factory. It would seem to us that there is uo bet ter point in the county. FOR "fwr" high prices read f*/xrlul high prides in the advertisement of Wt H. Dwight, Woodstock. We did not notice it until the first side $f our paper was worked oft. IN another column can he found a new advertisement of J. B. Blake, who is ottering rare inducements in Holiday Goods. If j'ou,don't read it you may feel as bad as that fellow shown in the •4ad." THE Waukeean Gazette says: "We learn that John G. Ragan. Esq., of Fre mont, In this county, has sold his farm to a German, and expects to remove to Wankegan before many weeks. He bought the land of the Government more than forty years ago and has owned it ever since, so that the ab stract makers will not have a very heavy fee for showing the title." PURCHASERS of Holiday Goods should not fail to read the new advertise ment of Mrs. Searles. in to-days PLAIN- DKALER, and then call and look oyer the large assortment of goods suitable for Holiday Preseuts. Mrs. Seai-les also oflers her stock of Millinery Goods at 60 cents on the dollar for the next twenty days. WK would again remind the public that there will be a Christmas Tree\at the M. E. Church, in this village, i»ii Friday evening, and that all are invi ted to seud in their Preseuts and have them put upon the Tree. During the evening there will also be singing and other exercise^. The public are cor dially invited. THE ne~v Bridge Is fast assuming '.'J proportions, and it now looks as though it would be easily completed in the time designated In the contract. The contractors could not have had a bet* ter time to do the work, and it has also been fortunate for the traveling public, asjtlie crossing on the ice has been good the entire time since the bridge was torn up. THE weather still continues gioomy, the sun not having made its appear ance iu this section for the past ten day6. The weather is tnild, with con- tant threatening of snow, but as yet but little of the "beautiful" has fallen. Old Vennor had better try agaiu. COULDN'T some ot our delinquent subscribers play Santa Claus in our office on Christinas? We have an empty stocking, the filling of which would causc great joy among the grown but innocent children of the PLAINUEALER office, OLD Dame Gossip is having full sway in our village at the present time. There are a few individuals who having no business of their own, spend' their time iu attending to everybody else business. An application of sole leather, vigorously applied, would do them good. WE would agaiu remind our readers, and especially the dancing public of the New Years Party at the Riverside House 011 Firday evening Dec 31st.-- Good music, and every comfort and convenience for the accommodation of those iu attendance will be furnished. Those who have attended parties at this popular Hotel may feel assured of havlug a good time. t J. F. PABKEK and W. D. Howo, of Creeuwood, sold and delivered to Geo. fClrireilge, iu Richmond, a few weeks luce, three hundred and thirty-five fleeces of wool that averaged eight and one-third pounds to th® fleece. They Informed us that they had one Buck that with eleven months growth sheared 24 1-4 pounds*, The sheep were jof the Spanish Merino breed. WE have received a specimen num ber of HAPPY SONGS, IN 40 page man- ilia form, music book for day school?, which certainly Alls a real want. The paper and "get up" of the little book is first class. The music--well, we don't sing, but It looks bright and cherry. The words are full of life and are not trashy. We think all teach ers will find this little volume is, just what they have long wanted. Send 10 cents for specimen copy to THOMAS KANE A Co.. 248 W ABASH AVE.. CHICA GO, III. II. E. WIGHTMAN. mine host of the Riverside House, had a Present la^t week that is worth while. It was in> less than a fine span of young horses and was presented to him by his fath er, who now lives iu Nevada. They were given to him through his brother, •John W ightman. and was a complete surprise to Henry. He was requested to come'to Clienoa to help pick out a team lor a Chicago party, and did not know that they were for'him until after they were bought. They are a fine pair of bays, lour and five years old, a»id will weigh about 2300 pounds. They are as fine a team as can be found in this section. THE Macready Coiuedy Company gave one of their entertainments at Riverside Hall last evening, and al though there was not as good a turnout as we expected to see, all were well pleased. In 1'act the company is one of the best now traveling, and are well worthy the patronage of the public.-- Last evening they played "Driven from Home, or a Father's Curse^*" and every character was well sustained.-- To-night, which will positively be their last, will be presented '-The Irish Diamond," together with a Roaring Farce, and 110 one who loves the Comedy should fall to go. We be speak for them a full house to-night. t^In the Elgin Advocate we find this remarkable (item: "A DeKalb county farmer has just lost a valuable cow from milk fever, and greatly de plores the demise of tlie animal. He kept the cow and books for' eleven years, and the result of the animal's ef forts and the farmer's figuring, is thus summarized: Cb--By 9 calves, $100 each ....*900.00 . 150.00 sea 00 ,#M 10.00 275.00 By premiums 30 fairs, $5 each. By butter 9 yrs, at |I0 per jr.. DB--Keeping II yrs, (H per jrr.. Profit on cow $1,135.00 This is a record not often excelled, and we do not wonder that the farmer howls and refuses to be comforted. If there be a book-keeper or bovine any- wher2, capable of doming to the front with a better showing, let he, she or it, speak up immediately, or ever mum." ,, tor- Three Ferrotypes lor 60 cts at Hll ler's Studio, , A CAKU. The everts Ing was pleasant 'and the Supper, which consisted of oysters and a great variety of other good things, was pre pared in excellent style. Nearly two hundred persons were present who testified to the good quality ot the eatables, and in a social way had an unusually pleasant time. The amount In cash was ($104.20) one hundred and four dollars and twenty cents. After paying all bills the net amount received by the pastor was ($88.76) eighty eight dollars and seventy-six, cents.-- The writer desires In this connection to express his thanks to all who were present for the material aid, and for the expressions of friendship and kind ness received from them. A few of the friends of former years were pre sent. mail}' of the friends of only a few months were there and quite a num ber of new acquaintances were formed which we hope will ripen into friend ship for future yearsj To ail ten der our heartfelt thanks, Respectfully, W, T. Mr. Hughes having written a guide book to the Dominion for the use of immi grants, the Mail feels the slight more keenly, and says: * Mr. Hughes' desire will therefore seem to some people to have been, while performing an act of philanthropy, to extend his own fame and perpetuate his own name in land whose interests are often diamet rically opposed to those of England and her colonies. But time is aveng ing our neglect." Mr. Hughes is 110 worse than thousands of other Eng lishmen.
