Esq., of Woodstock,- arrived there from Poncho Springs. Col., on Friday last. He was 30 years of age. Monday, the 21st, two men standing near him got into a quarrel. One of them drew a large'revolver with which he struck the other on the head. This discharg­ ed the pistol and Mr. Church was struck in the right eye and felj dead. The latest news in regard to our Jong hoped for direct railroad line to Chi­ cago will lie found In the following from the Lake Get evji, Herald. There seems to be something authentic about this news: For the last month or two rumors of all kinds lun-e been flying about con eernlng the old Northern Pacific Air Line Railroad, now the Portage A Lake Superior Road. Nothing definite could be learned until this last week, when a trade that has been 011 the boards for some time, was finally com­ pleted. The following friMii the Mil­ waukee Republican will give our readers an idea of the facts: The Daily Republican recently pub­ lished an item stating that it had been rumored that the Chicago «fc Superior Air Line had been sold, and that a through line would be eonstructedtrom f'hica o m Lake Superior. This rumor was yesterday verified by reports re­ ceived in this city. The franchise of the old organization has passed into the hands of an entirely new company, among whom are Mr. J. A. Ludington, a wealthy capitalist of Chicago, who has been elected president of the new organization, and Barnes Bros of New York. The line is already graded from Geneva, in this state to jefler«oii. The laud grant, ol the company, which three railroad companies were striving to gain possessiou'of during the present session of the legislature, thus remains in its possession, as the company's title to it does not expire until May, 18*2; and by that time tlie new roan will probably lie entirely completed. If not. however, a bill will probably be introduced requesting an exteution of the time. T!ie work on the road will begin early in the spring, as the first contracts for the work have already been let. aud all funds necessary have been raised. We had previously written to Rail­ road Commissioner Turner, asking.him if lie knew anything about the matter and if there was any truth in the rumors we had heard. Esq., the representative of the Chicago, Portage <& Superior Railroad, informs me that it it the intention of his couipanv to enter upon the con­ struction of the road the present year, and build a considerable portion of it-- the Land Grant Division of sixty miles southeast from Superior, to receive at­ tention first, in order to earn the laud grant conferred upon the company be­ fore its time expires, which will be In May. 1S82.
