M. McCormlck. of Normal. After conriderkble routing business had been cllnposed of W.B.Powell,of Aurorr^ read a paper on HUow to Unify State and O&Anty Srtftorvlslon." The lead ing thought wai that all bnitlneos quire? supervision; all manufacturing mtabllahmentf, all railroads, all great corporation* s and experience has de monstrated that it is impossible to pre vent collapse and failure of public ^ schools unless there be intelligent, or ganised supervision by Superintend ents who ought to be well paid. Cheap u- things are generally of little value.-- This has been demonstrated at all r tlBW In all countries. A cheap lawyer is an abomination; a cliekp doctor Is poison; a oheap preacher paves the way to moral suicide; and a cheap school Wi teacher Is a nuisance of monstrous di- X- mensions. The present law provides for cheap Connty Superintendents, and ths people seem unwilling to pay for superior mental material. The men who estimate their services to be wdrth Only 0800 or 91,000 per annum are never higher estimated, and generally carry the County Convention. The general discussion that followed was limited. Time would not permit the expending of much mind on the sub ject. However, a few remarks endors ing the paper were made by^John Hull, of Carbondile, and Henry Higglns, of Jacksonville. "promotions," was the subiest of a paper presented by Dr. Leslie Lewis, of Hyde Park, which contained much of practical informa tion and suggestions. The discussion ef the {tabject was continued by Samuel Inglis, of Gtiervillo; L. 8. Kilborn, of Marshall, and E. F. Fitch, of Oalva. THE AFTERNOON SESSION, tile Chairman announced the following Committee on Comparative Examina tion: John Hull, Carbondale; J. T. Yoder, Busluiell, Alberet C. Lane, Chicago; Mis* Julia Scott. Normal; Miss Sarah P. Waite, Springfield; H. L. Beit wood, Ottawa. The Illinois Woman's rhri^tain Tem perance Union presented a letter on Scientific Temperence Text books •ought to be Introduced in the public schools. The Committee en Resolutions made • report. Messrs Bateman, Edwards, Slade, and Sabin were named as a committee to inform the Thirty-third General Assembly What was desired. This matter was •nbsequently laid upon the table, which Was occasioned by the suggestion that the Thirty-third General Assembly Would not convene until after the next meeting of the Association, . The regular order of proceedings wa» then resumed. "Teacher" formed the Mbject of a paper then read by George Howland, Superintendent of Public In •traction. Chicago--an able and elo quent production. "Indirect Influence of Teachers and Teaching upon the Foundation of Character" was the topic discussed by Biiir. Richard Edwards, of Princeton. Resolutions pertaining to tho death 0f President GarUeld were presented and adopted. flie Ncftninacing Com mm It tee pre sented and recommended the following officers for the ensuing year: President X. C. Dougherty, of Peora. A Viw President for each Congressional Dis tHct was also named. Miss Mary A West, of Galesburg, was elected Sccre tary, and Mathew Andrews, ofGales- lttirg, was eho^u Treasurer. The fol lowing Executive Committee was ap pointed: A. R. Sabin, Chicago: Jeteph Carter, Peru; #. B. Hdodi Sparta. fj»e report of the committee was Meet red and adopted. kIsolutioms extending thauki to the railroads for favors, to the citizens of Springfield* •fepeoially to F. W. Tracy and family, and the city teachers for courtesies ex fended, and to the Chicago Quartette Club for Its song service, were unani mously adopted, after which the As- feoiation adjourned sine die. THE RECEPTION. Tfte reception given the State Teachers' Association at th« •legant residence of Mr. Frank W. tpj^cy, of South Sixth, by the teachers fit this city, was in every respect a plsaaing affair, and will long be re- tttembered by those who were In at teniance. The house was brilliantly Illuminated and the gentle rays of the tadlp light playing through the cur tftlnad windows presented Indeed s Cbeeitul appearante to the passer-by jftyjle^ore the buftetings of the storm tnd the chilling blasu of the winter Wind* which sadly moaned aronud the and keenly whistled >he gray branches of the leaf- and formerly superintendent of sohools in McLean county, favored the assem blage with some humorous recitations, which called forth applause from his listeners. The evening passed away very pleasantly, as everything possible was done to make the occasion an agree able one, and it did net at all fall short of the anticipations of any one, and In leaning the city the visiting teachers will long remembered the evening so pleasantly spent.
