NATIONAL COLUMW. OnstionD IT s. D. Bumm. or r«Mon» not well known by the / . litor of ttiic column, the minutes of gt'ie Imi Teacher*' Meeting #?¥<| not ^ appeared at yet. It Is aald that "sixty fct of all the money spent in building and furnishing the houses ot America goes •forornament and decoration." We are quite sure this Is not true In re gard to shoot houses, as we know many that would be much improved wi th half that proportion spent in beautify- lag. . . . Soma ofetir schools at* ciwnplainlnp of the Irregular attendance of the iwrii*. Parent# often allow children to stay away from school for very trivial causes. A slight cold, not se- tere enough to Interfere with any of Ills amusements, will keep a child from school several days. And what harm .Is donet He loses the benefits of atady and instruction during tho time, and forms a habit of neglecting his business. These two lead to others bat they are serious ones ot themselves. Ho one but a teacher appreciates the first but the second Is patent to all. When we reflect that the habits of the boy arc quite likely to control the destiny of the man, we see the neces- slty of his forming good habits. If attending school be his business, see that be does it properly. The following sketch we clip from the Illinois School Journal: Stephen W. Clark, the well known author of Clark's Grammar, is now a tntn about sixty years old, and lives in his handsome suburban residence at Parma, N. Y., some twelve miles from Rochester. Formerly he devoted him self to school work, and had an acad emy at Parma, but he no longer teaches. He lias a large farm which t* mostly devoted to fruits. The house Is a fine two-story brick and is sur rounded with large trees and dense ahmbbery. Near the dwelling is a smaller building, formerly a tenement house which is fitted up for a carpen ter shop. Hera Mr. Clark spends many pleasant hours of recreation, in making articles of furniture to present to members of his family and to friends. -ffffwfippp »>ipp New Fal l STOCK, JUST RECIEVED -AT-- i m a n s CLOTsma HOTOB, AT W^tUCONDA.
