If the Demo crats have no unity of belief and pur pose on the question of free-trade then they have no pity, and this fact will quickly be developed however they may try to decieve themselves and the people. The organization, such as it has been and is, in a majority of the States, through its conventions and by its national platforms, is committed to the anti-protection Idea, yet in caucus last week it lacked the courage to assert its belief in this idea and was too weak to^show favor to the principle of protection. There was an expressed fear that neither course led to the pmbliccrib, though there seemed to be no other road open. "Beddern," shouted tlio earnest negro exherter, "dar am but two paths open bufo* you. Dar is de straight and nai rer one dat foads right down to everlastin' distruction; and dar l» de broad way dat goes straight to to eternal perdition!" "Dat bein' de oat>e," cried out an excited hearer, as lie climbed out of the church window, "dls nigger will take to de woods."
