Of the crop of 1S.S3 be tween 5 and 6 per 'cent was plowed up leaving 26.400,000 acres to be harvested. The present area is greater than that •f the census year by more than 2,000.. 000 acres. The increase is about 1.500,- 000 acres on the Pacific cost and 750,000 acres in the southern States. There is a small decrease In the Middle States and Ohio basin. P^"A "gentleman" visited Presiderft Arthur the'other day to sound him on the political-situnt-ien, but the Presi dent did not pimp worth accent, A correspondent telis how the interview »nded: The Visitor became weary and raove;l n-rvHii-lv in his seiit . Fin:il*y, ninkipg one lust, desperate artempt to jrei something out of t t ie President lie said: "lam told Mr. President, that Mr. Blaitie is gaining." "Those flowers you see on my table," said Mr. Arthur, with a twinkle in Ids eves, "are (ro«ii from the conservatory I have aboquetbrought in every morn ing. My daughter Nellie got me in the hahit of i t . and now 1' shouldn't know what to do without them, i t is a goftd t i l ing to keep as much of the beautiful in life before us as possible." ll . .- *L' iVThe London Times remarks that it ha* taken very li t t le interest in American politics, during the past four months. We do not know whether there is any special significance in this British apathy, but observation shows us that when perfidious Albion does Interest herself in our politics i t is only to manifest her phenomenal ignorance of them. By-and-by the Presidential campaign will st ir up our neighbors again, and then we will have the Timet explaining to i ts readers that Mr. Blaine is an old Virginia planter who fought under Lee, that General Logan has long represented Maine in Congress, and that recon struction is the main issue, to which Boss Kelly and Mr. Tilden are unalter ably opposed. In truth, we miss the English articles on American politics, for they are unique, aud it is impossi ble to deny that they possess a weird beauty all their own. J9*The following from Every Satur~ day , Is a lamentable tact: "Presi dent Arthur will come before the con vention in ^Chicago backed almost ex- cluslvely bjr southern delegates. He % will seek the nomination for president •f this country upou the sttfeugth of bia weakness, as you might say, for the #ery states which are his strength in the convention will go Democratic in the election, aud the states that en- , , . dors* Logan. Blaine, Edmunds, and other candidates will be expected to ./elect Arthur, should he g^t the noml- nation. This is radically wrong. The S; states that are expected to elect |P"V should be privileged to nominate. The j |F present arrangement is a menace of no trifling moment to the Republican party. It is not the question of Mr. Arthur ' s f i tness. He is well qualil ied to fil l the office, as he lias alreadv proven tft the general satisfaction of most tnen.but i t is the principal of the thing. Republicans might as well let the Democrats nominate their man as to grtmt that power to the delegates srboso states, without doubt, are Demo cratic.* THE Waukegan Gazette has the fol lowing in relation to a party of sur veyors now in Lako County: "The railroad suryeyors mentioned in the O'cctte a week or two since are sti l l at work in the county. They are in two parties, the first looking ent tl io l ine and the second taking levels and set ting stakes. They passed about a mile west of Half Day.going northwester^' . Three lines were run near Diamond Lake, two goiirg east and one west of the lake. The one that seemed to be the most satisfactory and which was continued, l ies east of the lake. On Monday the '-advance party was in the neighborhood of Ivanhoe, Fremo-.it Center and Fort Hill , Members of the party say that the route is being looked out by an Eastern Company, with a view of constructing a line between. Chicago and Creen Bay." CREEK DISTRICT. EDITOR PLAIXDEALER:--What is the matter with our able correspondents that they wait so long til l somebody else feels i t his duty to write up the items? A very quiet law suit came off before Esquire Baldwin on Saturday evening. The facts of the case, as near as we can glean them, are as follows: A young man from Chicago, who hat betn spending the winter in this village, being about to return to the city, con cluded that be had been insulted by a citizen of the town; thereupon, meet ing said citizen he threatened to give him a sound "drubbing" if he would please to accept It . Said citizen not being of a combative nature respect fully declined to accept the challenge, but Immediately swore out a summons for the young blood's arrest.
