Eklitor. • • . . fSTSpeaker Carlisle is thoroughly illssatisfied with the Idiocy of Demo crats in Congress, and is voicing his wrath in no uncertain tones. He de clares it bis opinion that unless the Democrats do something and begin to act together before long, Congress will break up, leaving the Democrats Jo so bad a condition that the Republi cans will carry the next House. Mr. Carlisle is exceedingly |dissatiefied with the lack of management display- «d by Morrison on the tariff *>ill, which Jm thinks ought to have bean present ed % long time ago, and before this been decided in the House. Then he Is worried at the evident lack of sym pathy between the admisistration and the Democrats In Congress, which he ha* tried hard to remedy, but without tnccess. Altogether the speaker is very much out of humor with the po litical situation and tlia conduct of his fellows in the House towards the ad ministration. 19*The political cauldron has com menced boiling and the present indi cations are that there will be a lively lontest for the office of Sheriff as the woods are full of candidates. The Sentinel has heard of no less than eight nnd how many more there are, or will be. is Impossible to foretell and all ex pect "to get there." The Sentinel calls the attention of its readers to the fact lhat Captain George Eckert, of this city, is a candidate for the position, nnd he with his friei ds, will use all honorable means to secure his nomina tion at the coming Republican county convention. George is. and always has been, a staunch Republican, has put in some hard knocks tor the party. Which with his record as a soldier dur leg the "late unpleasantness" ought to make him a strong candidate before the people. There is no doubt but What he will relieve the undivided rapport of his own towu--and thb Sen tinel gives him a hearty endorsement. «-- Wcxxlslock Sentinel. From an intimate acquaintance with Hr,Eckert for the past fifteen years *>f more, we can heartily endorse the Above. There is a large number of candidates In the ;field for this office, nnd who the county Convention may choose we cannot say. but this we can fay should they see fit to choose Mr. Sckert they will make no mistake. ^ A short time ago the United States Supreme court rendered a de i cision that Confederate mouey was - legal tender at one time, and under (grtain circumstances. A Virginian Whe had purchased a farm during the ^ War and paid for it with *20,000 in <)onfederate money, was sued before : the Circuit court of the Western Dis trict of Virginia, for a repayment of "the amount in United States funds, on the ground that the money which was accepted in payment wa3 not lawful tooney of the United States. The Circuit court gave a verdict for the the defendant was ordered to repay the amount. The fase was taken to the Supreme Court Of the United States, and Associate Justice Field rendered an opinion reversing the decision of the lower court, and declaring the first payment valid in every respect. Had Ihe lower court been sustained, an * Immense number of suits would have been begun through the South for the repayment of claims of a similar character. She has great stores of supplies for everybody far ami near. Oglesby because lie did not call out the mil.tary sooner t» suppress the rioting at East St. l<oois. The governor's remarks when fee visited the scene of trouble, pre vious to the collision between the police and the mob, is a lucid explana tion of his view3 on the subject. He •aid: *1 don't want the people of SlUtiola to be getting into the habit of titlokiog that they can call eut the Mtlltla, which is limited in this state, to settle every little local or county trouble that springs up. I want the people to know that their power for protection lies not in the military, but to their sheriffs, and I do not want to call out the militia unless there is a rerfl cause for it, for when 1 call it out $ won't have any nonsense--I mean to use it."
