Of the surviving victims •leven are permanently disabled and nafit for doty, and twelve (others are still suffering from their wounds. And lit justice has not been metedeut t* fbe authors of all this misery. tVAnd now It remains only tofffrifr |he saddeat of these words: farewell! Our Carter Is in public life no more. He has quit. He his gone out in a Mate of self glorification, like a tallow dip, with an unpleasant odor. The place that knew him will know him no forever. A loas of 060,000 Is reported Mar Wllkesbarre* Pa„ by the taming if a coal-breaker. FANATICISM. Ooe of the most astonishing specta cles of fanaticism ever witnessed In this country, was seen In Chicago at the late election, April Sth. On that day the enemies sf law, order, and regular government, the anarchist socialists, communists, and outlaws of all nations, banded together to take possession, by lawful means of the government of that city. They nomi nated their candidates, avowed their principles, shook the red flag In defi ance of all decent people, openly avowed their sympathy with the con demned anarchists sentenced to death for murder, and boasted that their •umber were sufficient^ to gain the oontrol of the government by the ballot box. The entire nation watched this battle with the utmost solicitude. Prayers were publicly offered up that th^ reign of lawless ness and terror attempted f to be In augurated might not succeed, but that the people of Chicago, who love liberty and honest government, the church and the school house, the bless ing of home and peace, the protection of law, property, morals and life, might oome to the rescue against the formidable host organized for their destruction. On the one side, al though it Included many deluded, Innocent fellows, were the classes ed ucated In crime by democratic In fluences; the Inocrrlgble, the vaga bonds, the outlaws, the ruffians, the incendiaries, the murderers; on the other, the law-abiding, law-lovicg, peaceful citizens, the friends of liberty, justice and chrlstain civilization. Polltlca were almost forgotten in the blaze of patriotic emotion. Demo crats were seen eagerly urging their b re them to vote the Republican ticket as the only escape from the danger that threatened them. The struggle was felt to be a momentous one. Ot Its results hung Issues of lite or death. And right here Is where the fanaticism comes In. With a full knowledge of these grave truths; with a revolution pending that might de stroy the labor aad property of thousands, and give popular institu tions a blow it might take years te recover from, the Prohibitionists, calmly and serious]f, without a shadow of hope for the success of their princi pal, voted their own ticket, when every vote wasted was of priceless value, aad, by their acts, deliberately aided ia the promotion of a cause which, if It had succeeded, would have been regarded as one of the severest blows liberty and morality bad ever received In this country. And these fanatics, these one idea Individuals, who by their acts deliber ately aided and abated anarebism, so cialism aad lawlessness generally, would set themselves up as leaders of moral reform In this oountry! They either lie In their pretensions or have not brains enough to discriminate be tween right and wrong. u m J I Story !m imalla 5 DC M ire J llAuperialt - ••-'jil'm w'k 67 7.1 w 17R 4 McOonal.l • it 57 75 H ISOWinlUvIs 51 75 II Ml J llntherntel 'A 28 88 «l Ml P Thalen ^ 28 88 1S3 j Itarblan 28 88 •» 184 A Mvcrs : t «0 M 185 Wm Schrfilnotf • t t 35 00 H 186 B Gilbert \. 3 7 50 M 187 -V A Orislv S 7 iVO «• 188 R A Howard i\ ' 7 50 •( 189 11 H NtchoU 7 50 M 190 <i Kothermel; \ 7 50 «« Ml A Wfiber ittf tafeof 7 50 H 1W J Van Slyko ; tafeof 7 50 II 1«8 A Myers tafeof 1 5* II 19* B Gilbert' 4>il ete 9 78 •• ;A5 sui i th, Son & Ott. 1 amber 250 oo !; 196 N 1.
