WHILE men should be dilligent in business, they are not placed in this world merely to make money, to eat, sleep and live like the lower animals. There is a higher purpose of existence, else it were better that we did not live at all. On the contrary we are here to (^fluae sunshine, to help make others happy, and to cultivate the graces ot kindness, charity, courtesy and all the nobler qualities of man hood and, womanhood. Whats the use of going around finding fault and quarreling, and especially during such weather as this. If there Is any time of tbe year when a man has an oppor tunlty to prove that he is a little lower than the animals It la when the mercury is one hundred degrees hot. Tbe man that quarrels In this weather ts a fool--and it la strange bow many ttaere are "Advertise by the year." said an old experienced business uian. MIt Is cheaper and yielda a be tter return In proportion to the money Invested. An advertisement should alwaya be before the public in some shape. If it disappears It Is soon forgotten, while those that remain have tbe superiority and advantage of the competitor. There is only one excuse for the discontinuing of an advertise ment, that of retiring from business." Pick out a paper like tbe PLAINDEALER to advertise In and you are sure to thrive. THE Agent for tho Harden Extin guisher was here last week and gave a test of his machine on Friday evening About five hundred feet of lumber was built up the shape of the side of a house, surrounded with shavings, laths, etc., saturated with kerosene, and then set on Are. When It was well on Are he commenced operations and suc ceeded in squelching It In no time. The Extinguisher is a good one, and If every Store, Mill Factory and Shop had one there would be no trouble in squelching an Incipient fire before much damage was dene. They are certainly all they are represented to be. dRAND WAR CONCERT For the benefit of tbe Universalis! H, Nichols has added a number of due tournouts to his livery and feed stable in the east end of Llnk- ville. He Is quite an artist himself and has just finished painting several vehicles of different kinds. Give Mr. N. a call, as he guarantees satisfac tion. The U. S. Hotel at Linkvllle, at pres ent under H. H. Nichols' management is one of the very best ea6i of the Cascades. No Chinese are employed there. The table is furnished with the best the market affords, while the rooms are kept neat and comfortable. We had the pleasure of dining with Mr. Nichols not long since, and must tcknowledge that we never sat down to a better meal In a hotel, He leaves nothing undone for the comfort ef bis guests, and those who patronize him mav rest a-sured that they will receive the bast of treatment. Extensive Im provements are contemplated at tbe U. S. Hotel in the near future. "Tips" many friends in this vicinity will be glad to bear of bis success. THE Catalogue of Mt. Morris Col lege, formerly Rock River Seminary, is before us. This Institution was founded la 1839. and Its excellent liter ary work Is felt over the West. The past year was one of tbe most prosper ous Lit Ita history, and tbe prospects for tho ensuing year are unusually encouriglng. Tho fact that this school is located In a Tillage that has neither saloon, billard hall nor theater, is a recommeudatlon that commends Ittoall Christian people. Tbe plain living and plain dressing required of students, the prohibition of tbe use of Lobaco, as well as the visiting of places ef Immorality, make it the people's school. Tbe Course of Instruction, In cluding tbe first-class Business Course, compared favorably with the best. The expanses are so low as to bring an eminently practical education, within the reach of every youth fn the laud. The Fall Term (12 weeks) begins Sept. 7,18S7. Catalogues and any desired information m4|r be . obtaloed by addressing tbe Principal, J. G. Mt. Morris, 111. The Married Couple* •••••-*- Some might envy the couple who are to be married on tbe FalrOronnda during the Fair, as they are to receive a large variety ef presents. Among the many which would please us would be tbe free ride to Chicago, free en tertainment at the Sherman House, complimentary ticket to McYiekera Theatre, and what is more a team and carriage to visit tbe sights of Chicago, IT ta' i*# Marly iitattty years sinoe "Tbe Blaeit Crook" first produced at Nlbio's Garderij Ifew York. Tbe stage splendor of *tbat distinctively spectacular prodliotlon--which was something in the nature of a revela tion In tbos« daysr^aptured New York and earned for the piece the most profitable results achieved by a theatrical venture up to that time. Since then many attempts have been made to duplicate the success achieved by '•The Crook." Not one has been entirely successful. For this reason the management of the Chicago Opera House, In conjunction with Messrs. Joseph Brooks and Alfred Thompson, determined to produce a piece which would aurpass anything hitherto at tempted in America In the way of scenic magnificence, while at the same time It possesssed all the elements of a first class burlesque. The result, after infinite labor, has been "The Arabian Nights; or Aladdiu's Wonderrul Lamp," now In iU seventh week at the Chicago Opera House. Every night, even In the hottest weather the house is crowded to the door, and it is safe to say that no such success has been scored by a theatrical perform ance since "Tbe Black Crook was fiist given. The Arabian Nights in Its gorgeous scenery, magnificent cos tumes, large and well-drilled ballets, novel stage effects, pantomime trick- sets, clever ootntnedlans, graceful lancers and beautiful music, has never before been equalled In America. Over 120 people are engaged in the cast. The total cost of the production waa a little over 940,000, The Mayflower. The Congregational Sunday School A Publishing SocletyiMgan with this year the publication of a four page weekly for youngest readers In the primary department of our Sunday schools, the name Mayflower being given It as appropriate to the Pilgrim series of publications for Sunday schools of which it was to form a part. The Society baa recently learned that a newspaper bearing the same name had for some yoars been published at Yarmouth port, Mass., by Mr. Ueerge Otis. This has led to a friendly cor respondence, and Mr. Otl°, with evi dent sympathy in the work of the So clety, cordially acquiesces in the use which is made of the title. The May flower, in connection with the juvenile publication a'^ove referred to. Ac knowledgments are due to Mr. Otis for his great courtesy in this matter, and it should be clearly understood that his right to the title. The May flower. as applied to a newspaper, is in no way affected by this use which is made of It, with his knowledge and consent, by tbe Congregational S. S. & Pub. Society. Mr. Otis' Mayflower Is an attractive weekly paper (secular) of eight pages and Is Intended fer the family. It has a large variety of read ing matter adapted to old and yourg Is carefully edited, and its price, 91 per year, places it within the reach ot many roaders who cannot afford the Itlgher-priced papers.--Conqregation~ alist, May 26,1887.
