Wo have a prlmer A Modern Wonder which sets forth with singular fulness and brevity what is going to be ,In Wide Awake for a year ahead. The primer is not very long. The little pages are easy to read. But It holds such wealth of learning and en tertainment, you wonder how so much ean be got into a dozen months; and yet you read on the title page cb*t the half is not rbld. It to a wonder! Wide Awake Is a veritable library, changing from month to month and from year to year and always growing bettor apparently. But what we can't understand is how they can put so much money into it and pay so much for getting sub scribers. Tbe Holiday number contains .the premium list of 32 pages, Tiiey give a boy or girl who gets subscrii>ers al most as much In his choice of two or three hundred things as the money he sends amounts to! And the things are such as people want; a good many of them new to most of us. Even the premium list is good reading. Where the profit comes from out of 92.40 a year Is what we can't make out; but that is none of our business. Send for the primer to D. Is not tho fact. Ninety-one Maps containing nearly every geographloal point of interest throughout the world, are given, and each is a gem of the engraver's art. Delicately yet distinctly colored, them maps are exquisite illustrations of the best color printing to day obtainable. While the Maps leave nothing to be desired by way of fullness, they are fully up to date, and show every recent discovery or change of boundary. One Lundred and twelve pages of terse, well arranged, and accurate in formation concerning every important country or state on the globe, follow the maps in this compact volume. In fact, the book is not only a compre hensive Atlas, but also a condensed Gazetteer of the whole world, and all put in an attractive and substantia] binding, and sold for fifty cents. On the receipt of this sum the publishers mail It to anv address. :k ;;|i Carter Harrison was fond of ] noting the favorite remark of a one lme Kentucky Governor: "When -things are bad they stay bad; whet they get d--d bad the people get up | •»nd fix them." It became possible to unite on Sadi-Carnot as Grevy's suc- ^ _ -cesser to the Presidency chiefly be- cause the former had in the coarse of a ] rather colorless career contrived to | rsteer clear of collisions with either of ^ the warring factions which keep ^ " French politics In a state which no body outside of France can understand. In this faculty of avoiding rows lay the strength of Carnot as a candidate. I The forces of Ferry & DeFreyclnet iV> *' were the irreconcltables In the case, and between the two a rank outsider i slipped in and captured the prize. What kind of a president Carnot will make or what kind of a govern ment he will be able to organize is beyond guessing, as his past record furnishes no clue. He starts out with .the advantage of being comparatively free from political entanglements and complications, and with no "bad eggs' in tbe shape ot present son-in-law or former mistress to create an unpleas ant odot in his administration, and with these exemptions In his favor he ought to be able to keep oat of trouble long enough at least to draw tbe first installment of his comfortable salary.
