MBS. L. E. flKKKETT, President. MM. T. J. WALSH, secretary. Cardinal Manning, in urging the forma tion of juvenile temperance societies, •ays: "If the children of to-day are trained up in temperance, happy will be the homes and parents of the next gener ation. For these and other reasons, too many to give now, I earnestly call on fathers and mothers to bring up their children without the temptation, or even the taste of any intoxicating drink. Pre vention is better than cure. Keep them from the taste, and you will guard them from the temptation. Give to your chil dren the leave and liberty to refuse all intoxicating drink."--Toon# Crusader. More Dangerous Than Cyclones. People talk with bated breath of" the dangers of a tornado, and speak of the terrible accidents occurring in vari ous sections, by which hundreds of lives have been lost, and yet the same men stand listless, inactive, at the cry of sixty thousand men who are annually sacrificed bv strong drink. It is all well enough to dig cellars in Which to hide from the fury of the storm, but who will deride the fathers and mothers who de sire protection from the great scourge of intemperance, sweeping broad-cast through the earth, its hands red with murder, and its voice made up of curses? The man or woman who asks protection from such a monster iniquity should not be regarded as either a crank or fanatic. There is no mistaking the fact that in temperance is the crime of the age. A Btuassller's Story. A man named Stacy, ths owner of a splendid drinking saloon in New York, recently signed the pledge and closed his house. Hearing that a party of lads had formed themselves into a temperance so ciety, he went to them and gave them his- experience as a rumseller. We repeat some of his recollections for our readers: "Isold liquor," said Mr. Stacy, "for ^ eleven years--long enough for me to see the beginning and end of its effects. I have seen a man take his first glass of liquor in my place, and afterward fill the grave of a suicide. I have seen man after - man, wealthy and educated, come into my saloon, who now cannot buy his dinner. I can recall twenty customers, worth one hundred thousand to five hundred thousand dollars, who are nQW without money, place or friends." He warned boys against entering sa loons on any pretext. He stated that he had seen many young fellows, members of a temperance society, come in with a friend and wait while he drank. "No, No," they would say, "I never touch it. Thanks all the same." Presently, rather than seem churlish, .one would take a - glass of cider or harmless lemonade. "The lemonade was nothing," said the rumseUer, "but I knew how it would end. The only safety, boys, for any man, no matter how strong his resolutions, is out side the door.of the saloon." PILlLSBURIT -A*D- ;WASHBUBN Flour Hills Co. .
