It will therefore be seen to-*;, that the Republicans have made a clear I.',, gain iu this town of from forty-six to *1. fifty-two votes. • "• • i.v'-. When it is taken into consideration I;" ;,':--that this was accomplished in the face of hy the former large democratic majority and against the combined efforts of a OAtif /vnf Ktr 4-Vir element, we consider the result as one of which the Republicans of McHenry have ."-caase to feel proud. The most systemat ic • 8c lying and misrepresentations havr |f been resorted to, and nothing was tor ^ low for them to do in order to accom- plish their ends, but thanks to theintelli- fe'. \ gence of the people they have signally ^ , failed at every point, and the whol* gang, mugwumps, soreheads and their S?*V ©emoeratic allies have been relegated to their political graves, there to remain |iV-v forever more. The people have no u»- for them. The Republican party of McHenrj «ounty comes ont of the fight with clear- fekirts, and elects every name on it9 tick- bJ ® majority in round numbers of £;: over 1,000. '» "Hie following is the vote on the Legis lative ticket, in this District, on Tuesday "last, as far as we have received it: H. J. Beck 8981 <3eo. Reed .... ̂ 8510 Geo. R. Lyon 7819 P. H. DeLaney 8581 , . It will thus be seen that Beck and Seed, Republicans, and DeLaney, Demo crat, are elected. We have not received the vote of ShnrtleS and Bradbury, In- ; dependents, but this much we do know, < ? that Shurtleff is alone responsible for the 1 - defeat of Lyon, who lacked only 762 :: votes of beating the Democratic nomi- - nee. While Shurtleff had no earthly show of being elected, for the purpose of venting a petty spite because he was not successful in the Republican convention, .. he causes the defeat of one Republican nominee and deprives the Eighth Dis trict of being the Banner District of the state. This may be good politics but it will be hard to make the people be lieve it in the future. The llgures show that what we have al ways claimed is true, that the Republicans have votes enough and to spare to elect three men in this District, but some fool sorehead, not having sense enough to abide by the will of the people in conven tion expressed, is sure to step in and de feat what otherwise would be a glorious •fctoiy. Even in Pennsylvania, which was overrun by these swindles, the experience of the past has had but' little effect, for news comes of the collapse of a Pittsburg concern which roped in about 40,000 victims and made way with from $3,000,000 to $4,000,000 of their money. It put forth what it called a "discretion- Afv nnnl ptoStS of 20 to 200 per cent a month. ISTThe Keeley cure and the Willow Bark will soon be no where, if the story told in the following dispatch from Ish- peming, Mich., has any foundation in fact: A report comes from the Ropes gold mine, near here, that at the bottom level a spring has been struck which supplies a strong stream of highly colored water being nearly as yellow as gold and plain ly holding considerable of that precious material in its solution. It is very pnlft- table and ice cold. Several of the men working iu that level have been in the habit of freely drinking this water, and it was noticed that as they drank the de sire for alcoholic stimulants died within them. Some of the men have been heavy drinkers of beer and whisky, but since I the use of this water they had no wish I for any stimulants. Their health and physical condition is generally improved, and it is thought that the water is a nat ural "gold cure," not only for the liquor habit, but for general diseases. There is some talk of erecting a hugh hospital at the mine, using the water as a eure-all 1 the ills of men. BABBIAK BROS, have just put in A new of the finest pipes ever brought to market. The Election Qn Tuesday was one that carried joy to the heart of every loyal Republican, It was more than a victory, for not only were the offices filled by Re publicans but sham democracy war* buried so deep that t-hey will be heard of no more until the resurrection morn. We san no better express ourselves than by copying the following trom th< Inter Ocean of Wednesday morning: "The inconsiderate verdict of 1892 was reversed with a whoop. Two years ago the Republicans lost Illinois by 26,993, Indiana by 7,125, New York by 45,518, Wisconsin by 6,544, and saved Ohio only by a narrow margin of 1,072 Republican plurality. Yesterday every state was re claimed, Illinois by 125,000, Indiana by 50,000, New York by 150,000, Wisconsin by 50,000, Colorado by 20,000, Ohio in creased her great Republican majority of last year, and Michigan. Massachusetts, and Iowa their majorities of two years ago. Two years ago the Republicans elected only 127 of the 356 members ol'Congress and lost the Legislatures in enough States to give the Democrats control oi the Senate. Yesterday they regained nearly every lost Republican district and carried many of the strongest Democrat ic districts by large majorities, defeating Wilson in West Virginia, and invading several Democratic strongholds in the South. The Republican tidal wave seems to have involved more or less all the States holding elections, increasing Republican majorities in Republican districts and decreasing or wiping out Democratic majorities in Democratic States. It is a great victory, and as significant as it is great. It means that the people, having tried the Democratic party with full power, repudiate national and state administrations, and give the Republi can party a new vote of confidence. It means repudiation of free trade and free- trade methods, and a ringing indorse ment of protection and other fundamen tal principles of Republicanism. It is a repudiation of Tammany in New York and Chicago and a promise of better things in municipal, State and National affairs. « ' You blank fool, I told you vou couldn't make Jbhat race for sheriff. You were out classed by that Republican horse. A sorehead trying to explain, these tears." 'Excuse Where?Oh! Where are those 1100(?) that signed my petition? y<, t f FOR SALE. GOOD NIGHT AIDING THE SUFFERERS. report of the commission, appointed by the governor of Minnesota to care for the sufferers by the great forest fire in that state has been published. It is gathered from this jmport, which is writ ten by Rev. Wm. Wilkinson, that there was u*ter destruction of farm buildings, implements and food supplies over a space of 600 square miles. The first work of the commission was to collect and bury the dead and open depots for food supply for the living. Of the dead 447 were identified. After temporary re lief had been organized a systematic ef fort to provide substantial shelter was made, and everywhere throughout the burned district houses are going up to protect the homeless people from thp rigors of a Minnesota winter. The win ter food supply must be wholly provided for by state aid or private charity; and in the spring there will be need of grain and potatoes for seed, and an entirely new equipment of agricultural imple ments and live stock. The people of o$her states than Minnesota may well contribute to render the poor people comfortable and prepare them for resum ing their pursuits in the spring. Many of the injured will require constant care and protection and 200 orphans must be provided for. The tire was one of the great calamities and every effort should be put forth to render the victims as comfortable as possible. When congress assembles it should hasten to enact a special law per mitting settlers to cut the partially burned timber on land that has not yet fully passed out of the- control of the government. ,> wmt ILL.
