VAN SLYKE, Secretary. THE time is nearly here when the das tardly coward gets in his or her work by dc&disg cat "st««g iu the dark" in the way of comic valentines. This is some times done through a spirit of mischief, but more often through malice. The re cipient to usually both mentally and so cially far above the sender, who is in more cases than one a person devoid of religion, principal or morals, and when known should tie ostracised from the socie%pf all decent people. COUNTERFEIT quarters have made their appearance in some of the large cities in great numbers, and they will soon drift into the channels of trade. They are made of German silver, and have about as near the true ring as it is possible to make them, and very much resemble a coin that has been in circulation for Some time. They are supposed to have come from Chicago, but thus far the de tectives have been unable to locate the mint. AN inventive genius has gotten up a contrivance that should sell like hot cakes in church circles. It is a contribu tion box and is certainly a triumph in its way. The coins fall into slots of dif ferent sizes and all dollars, halves, quar ters aud dimes land on velvets, but the nickles and pennies drop on a Chines* gong. It is needless to say/ that it will never be popular with thosp who believe that "salvation is free" and practice it by patronising the contribution box lightly. A DESPATCH from Washington says "Applications for homestead entries on lands within meander lines in the Fox Lake region have been refused. This is good news for ths owners of summer re sort property in the lake region, who have been bothered for the last fiveyears with Chicago lawyers, who claim that they have taken up land along the lake shore, formerly swamp land, but now dry on account of receeding waters. Old residents, who have lived there for thirty years, contested the claim, and are now victorious." DR. O. B. HOWE will make his next reg ular visit at the Parker House, West McHenry, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22d and 23d, where he hopes to see all his old patients and as many new ones as desire his services. The Doctor has had unprecedented success in treating diseases of long standing, and makes a specialty of diseases of the ear, nose, throat and lungs. Remember he makes no charge, except a small one for medi cine, until cured. Do not forget the dates, Feb. 22d and 23d, Mother ap pointments will prevent his remaining longer. THE THE sad news has been received here that Geo. W. Colby, who resides at Hoopfeston, 111., is dangerously sick. He is a son of Page Colby and was contem plating moving back here early in the spring. His many friends here hope to hear of his speedy recovery. THE Elgin Courier says: "Dr. Chas. Cook, coroner of McHenry county, and a banker at Huntley, is seriously ill. Dr. Wm. Cook, of Woodstock, his brother, died Tuesday of last week, and the wife of the latter is in a serious condition at her home. A SALVATION ARMY artist in PSC«ria wrote on a billboard in flaming letters a foot high: 'What shall I do to be saved?" A patent medicine fiend paint ed underneath in equally fiamingcapitals Take Carter's Little Pills." Upon which another holy paint slinger com pleted the triplet by adding, "And pre pare to meet thy God." THE McHenry County Trotting Horse Breeders Association announces the opening of six stakes to be trotted over the track offering the most added money. ' THE Social by the iadies of the Univer- alist ScKjiky, at the residence oi Jas. B Perry, on Friday evening last, was, not withstanding the severe weather, the most lamely attended of any of the season, about seventy being in attend ance, and was greatly enjoyed by all present. The programme was excelle; throughout, the refreshments Mr. and Mrs. Perry left nothii that would tend toward the pi d comfort of their guests. McHenry correspondent of the Nunda Herald last week had the follow ing amons the items from this place: Last Friday eve, the Masonic enter tainment came off with about 200 pres ent. Their program was flne, after which twenty tables were used for the cinch playing. All report a fine time. We wonder where said correspondent got his news. In the first place the Ma sonic fraternity here have had no enter tainment of any kind. And in the second place they [are not in the habit of getting up cinch parties at any time. 3aid cor respondent may have meant his item for a joke, but if so be should hava headed it so common people would know what be was trying to get at. WE have been trying a sample of Crofts & Reed's Medicated Toilet Soap, and have no hesitancy in pronouncing it one of the finest articles on the market. It will do all that is claimed for it, and is the most economical soap one can use. Daniel Slipper, of Wauconda, is the Agent, and is now in this village and will call on our citizens and lsave them a free sample, and asks for it *a careful trial. He is also agent for a Medicated Tar Soap and a Carbolic Soap, made by the same firm, which is said to be equally as good as the Toilet Soap. These soaps cannot be bought at the stores, and, therefore, our citizens should avail them selves of this opportunity when Mr. Slipper calls Ground.
