From Oshkosh, Wisconsin, comes a terrible tale of man's cruelty I About two years ago Peter Van Hoff marrried a young lady of Oshkosh. Soon aftter the marriage he began to drink heavily and make his young wife miserable, though she tried hard to reform him. Immediately after the birth of a daugh ter the husband left the city and has since remained away. Mrs. Van Hoff took in washing, and until rheumatism compelled her to re main idle, supported herself and child. Humane Agent %ilkie was informed Mrs Van Hoff was ill and destitute; he went at once to investigate. As he opened the door the child, seated in its cradle, laughed with pleasure at his com ing, but continually called "Mamma!" He had heard this same call as he ap proached the house, 'and thinking the mother somewhere about stepped into a back room to find her. On a couch covered with a sheet, he saw a woman's form. Lifting it he saw Mrs. Van Hoff's paleface. She was dead. Days of long suffering had left her but a skeleton; and the features, rigid in death, to'd a pa thetic story ot desertion. Moderate OrlnkUr The following was the testimony of the late Geo. Childs in relation to what is called moderate drinking. It may be well pondered by. few professing Chris tians who still assert their liberty in re lation to this matter: "I can not lay too great stress on the matter of strict tem perance, Drinking beer, wine or spirits is a useless and dangerous habit. It does too good, and if the habit is contin ued it is almost sure to lead to destruc tion and death. Taste not. Touch not. Handle not. You should have courage to say no, if you are asked to drink. In looking back over my life I can r<c ill many of the best and most promising ot my companions who were ruined by the habit of drinking, not one of whom ever imagined that he would be wrecked in mind and body, and eventually fill a drunkard's grave. There is no safety in moderate drinking; every ono who touch es it at all is in danger." See the Neckties at Owea ft ttukpefi'a. Christmas Goods of all kinds endless variety at Simon Stoffel's. The hollow cheeks, the sunken eyes, the dark, puffy circles under the eyes, the sallow parsnip-colored complexion indicates it. A physician would ask if you had rheumatism, a dull pain or ache in the back or over the hips, stomach trouble, desire to urinate often, or a burning or scalding in passing it; if after passing there is an unsatisfactory feeling as if it must be at once repeated, or if the urine has a brick dust deposit or strong odor. When these symptoms are present, no time should be lost in removing the cause. Delay may lead to gravel, catarrh ot the bladder, inflammation, causing stop page, and sometimes requiring the draw ing of the urine with instruments, or may run into Bright's Disease, the most dangerous stage of kidney trouble. Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the great discovery of the eminent kidney and bladder specialist, is a positive remedy for such diseases. Its reputation is world-wide and it is so easy to get at any drug store that no one need suffer any length of time for want of it. However, if you prefer to first test its wonderful merits, mention the PLAIN DEALER and write to Dr. Kilmer & Co., Binghamton, N. Y., for a sample bottle and book telling all aboat it, both sent absolutely free by mail. HOLIDAY EXCURSIONS. Excursion tickets will be sold at all stations on tbe Northwestern line (C. St N. W.
