Feeh&n, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Dio cese of Chicago since Swpfc. 10, 1800, will retire from the active management of his office with the close of the present year. Early in January a Coadjutor Bishop, with the right of succession, will be consecrated, and will relieve the present incumbent of the burden of his ecclesiastical duties. It is accepted as as true that the Rev. Father P. J. Mul- doon ia the priest upon whom the new honor will be bestowed. Archbishop Feehan is 71 years old,and while in good health considering his age and the onerous work he has done for the church, is not able alone to conduct the ecclesiastical and business affairs of the large archdiocese under his care. In recognition of this condition the Rev. Father Alexander McGavick "was made Auxiliary Bishop, without the right of succession. " Ill-health. impared the new prelate's usefulness, and. finding that satisfactory relief was not in .sight; he resigned last May and his resignation was accepted by the Pope. It was then decided to appoint a Coadjutor Bishop. The sel ection was made. The appointment is in the hands of Archbishop Feehan now. Father Muldoon, tl«e credited appointee, will return from Europe about Dec. 20, and after the elaborate services incident to the Christmas season are over the new Coadjutor will be consecrated. The date will lie between Jan. 1 and 15. Archbishop Patrick A. Feehan was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1829. His father was Patrick Feehan, a devout Catholic, When a boy young Patrick decided to enter tht* ministry. After leaving Patrick's College, May- nooth. he answered a call from Bishop Kenrick find came to America as a mis sionary. He was ordained at St. Louis. In 1865 he was made^Bishop of Nash ville. As stated in the foregoing, he assumed charge of tht? Archdiocese of Chicago in 188Q. Since he came the territory under his care has witnessed a remarkable development. ' Father Muldoon is one of the youngest of the leading clergymen in the archdio cese. He was bom in Columbia, Cal., in 1863. He has been cancellor of the Chicago diocese and secretary to the Archbishop for seven years. In 1895 he was appointed pastor oi St. Charles Borromeo's church at Twelfth and Cy press streets. The recommendation for his appointment *as Bishop coadjutor was forwarded to Rome In September, and on ^ept. 20 Father Muldoon started for Europe, it was stated, to see the Passion Play. It is believed that while abroad he visited the holy father and proved satisfactory for the appointment as coadjutor Bishop. * Just Saved H4s Life. It was a thrilling escape that Charles Davis, of Bowerston, Oy lately had from a frightful death. For two years a severe lung trouble constantly grew worse until it sfeemed he must die of consumption/ Then he began* to use Dr. King's New Discovery and lately wrote: "It gave instant relief and ef fected a permanent cure."
