In gambling the Filipinos are the most persistent race on earth. As soon as a servant or day laborer gets a small stake he stops work and gam bles to get rich quick. Monte and cock-fighting are the choice methods. If successful at play the Filipino nev er works more; if he loses everything he will do anything to regain his losses. Congressmen Have New Joke. This is the latest jocular remark among members of congress when constituents press them for unobtain able positions: "I guess I'll have to get him a job as lineman with the Marconi company." WILL PRESERVE OLD MILL Kentucky Landmark Built by Father of President Lincoln. A movement Is now on foot for the preservation of the old Kirkpatrlck flour mill, near rtodgervllle, Ky., built by the father of Abraham Lincoln. The mill is located a mile from the place where Lincoln was born and was erected in 1816. Abe often trudg ed across the fields leading from the humble log cabin to the mill with a sack of corn across his shoulders. During his term as president, Lincoln frequently asked about the old mill and in an old notebook of his was Happiness is always where we find it, but seldom where we seek it. Pennsylvania Clergyman Has Started on a Novel Quest. The Rev. George W. Brownback of Reading, Pa., is making a tour to select & wife. Believing that to be successful In theTfninistry a clergyman should have a helpmate, and being unable to find his ideal in Reading, he inserted an "ad" in a matrimonial paper. Re sponses came in great numbers from all parts of the world. He received about 1,000 letters and nearly as many Rev. G. W. Brownback. photographs. He dropped all bat twenty-five candidates, gradually sift ing the number to seven. These live at Hartford, Conn.; Glastonburg, Conn.; Dover, Del.; Gloucester Point, Va.; Wheeling, W. Va.; Erie, Ont.; and Toronto, Ont. Ground for a Pension. One of the most ludicrous pleas for a pension was made right here in Portland. When the applicant was asked if he ever served in the army or navy, he said, "No." Asked as to what grounds he based his application on, he said that he was in eastern Ore gon when the Indians went on the warpath; that in making for a point of safety he and some other men were attacked by the Indians, one of the other men being killed and another wounded. He escaped on account cf the fieetness of his horse, but the en counter caused him such excitement that he had occasional fits ever slnoe, and on account of the fits he thought he was entitled to a pension.--Port land Oregonian. BEJEWELED PUSH-BUTTON. Some Set with Diamonds and Other Prectoa* Stones for Millionaire*, "Here are some rather odd things-- the first of their kind I have ever made," said a jeweler, as he laid upon a cloth of black velvet a number of silver and gold buttons, into which were set small diamonds, pearls, sap phires, opals and emeralds. "They are electrical push-buttons," he explained, "and they are to be used in a country house that one of our millionaires is building. "Push-buttons, you know, are com ing into wider and wider use. The dwellings of the rich contain fifty or sixty of them nowadays. And as a con sequence of their profuse appearance everywhere architects are giving a good deal of care to their designing. These six buttons, for instance, that are to go in a white and gold drawing room, are, you see, of silver, studded with opals, and they are to be set on a plate of onyx in a silver frame. "They will go well, don't you think," asked the jeweler, according to the Philadelphia Record, "with the draw ing room's delicate and pale decora tive scheme?" A Very Strong Letter. La Farge, Wis. Wm. T. Payne of this place has written a rather startling let ter to the papers. He says: "I was in great pain across my back for four week", and was taking medi cine from a doctor all the time, but it did not do me any good. "I bought a box of Dodd's Kidney Pills, and had not taken riore than four or five aoses before I noticed that they were doing me good. "They helped me right along, and 1 kept on using ihem till I had used four boxes when the pain left me altogether. One box of Dodd's Kidney Pills has done me more g~oa than five dollars worth of doctor's medicine. "This remedy has certainly -worked wonders in my case, and I feel it my duty to givj I* the credit due." WOT Boston Working Girls. John Simmons, who died a quarter of H century ago, .will shortly have his life's dream realized In the building of a school for the education of work ing girls in Boston. Henry I* La Favour of Williamr college has been selected as president of the new in stitution. Odd Creed in Germany. In "freak" religious developments the United States is, for the time be ing, outdone by Germany. The latest of these bodies has its headquarters in Stuttgart, and seeks to establish branch communities in the other towns and villages of the coun try. The "brethren" bind themselves to celibacy; they are vegetarians and op posed to the use of tobacco and alco hol in all its forms. No community can number more than 25 brethren who are called "families." These fam llies have each a "father" and "moth er," whq are in special communion with the "spirit." Every Saturday they meet for worship, and the father or mother then "reveals" the message of the week, which he or she has re oeived direct from the spirit This message regulates their entire life, not merely the religious part of it. In the Book Shop. A salesman in a Philadelphia book store is said to have been asked these three questions: "Do you s¥ll that new book I heard my niece telling about last week? Here's the name of it (tak ing out a slip of paper), 'Ben Hur?" "Have you a novel by Hawthorne called 'Moses from an Old Man?' " want a copy of 'When Nightshade Was in Flower,' please. I think it's a novel but it sounds like a work on garden ing." STAT* OF OHIO, CITT or TOLEDO, I LUCAS COCNTT, Frank J. Cheney makes oath that he is the Benlor partner of the firm of F. J. A Chapter of Accidents. A Cavanacaw (Ireland) dog barked. The dog frightened a cat, which sprang upon a table. The shock upset a lamp, the burning oil from which sprinkled the cat, which thereupon dashed round the room and into a stackyard, spreading fire on every hand. Much damage was done, and a farmer's son was seriously burned. 'Trymi" Never Fails to cur© Constipation, Stomach, Liver or Nervous trouble. Nurses* Experience, Medical men say that a good nurse in a difficult case is better than med icine, but when we can get a good nurse and good medicine, the patient stands a much better chance of re covery. The few words of advice given below by nurse Eliza King, are well worthy the attention of all readers: " I have constantly used St. Jacobs Oil in the various situations I have occupied as nurse, and have invariably found it excellent in all cases requiring outward application, such as sprains, bruises, rheumatic affections, neuralgia, etc. In cases of pleurisy it is an excellent remedy--well rubbed in. I can strongly recommend it after several years' use and experience. It should be in every household." Sister CAROLINA, St. Andrew's Hospital, writes: " I have found St. Jacobs Oil a most efficacious remedy in gout; also in sprains and braises. Indeed, we cafonot say too much in its praise, and our doctor is ordering it constantly." The Most Perfect BLOOD PURIFIER That Can Be Found Is Biff Industries Built op on Small Article*. Few people realize the wants and re quirements of the eighty millions of peo ple in the United States. Who would think that it requires over a million dol lars capital to carry on the package dye business in this country, and that there are twelve different factories in the Unit ed States that manufacture package dye? One of the largest package dye factories In the world is that of the Putnam Fade less Dye Co., Unionville, Mo. In this fac tory alone over three million packages are put up every year. When* you know that each package colors from S to 6 pounds of goods, or that the output of Putnam t a del ess Dyes alone will color from 9 to 18 million pounds and that It would require more than 800 cars to haul this amount of dyed £oods. you will re alize the magnitude of this seemingly small business.
