It is curious to notice how completely Ignorant "the plain man" remains as to the later de velopments of electrical theory. Some recent correspondence has led me to think that a vague notion that electric ity Is a fluid which In some mysterious way flows through a telegraph wire like water through a pipe Is nbout as far as he has got, and if we add to this some knowledge of what he calls "elec tric shocks" we should probably ex haust his Ideas on the subject. Yet this Is not to be wondered at Even the most Instructed physicists can do nothing but guess as to what electric ity is, and the only point on which they agree is as to what It is not There Is, in fact a perfect consensus of opinion among scientific writers that it is not a fluid--1. e., a continuous stream of ponderable matter, as Is a liquid or a gas--and that it is not a form of energy, as is heat. Outside J$ils limit the scientific Imagination is at liberty to roai« where It llsteth, and. although it has used this liberty to a considerable extent, no definite result has followed up to the present time.-- Academy. Kidney trouble preys upon the mind, dis courages and lessens ambition; beauty, vigor and cheerfulness soon disappear when the kid- neye are out of order or diseased. Kidney trouble has become so prevalent that it is not uncommon for a child to be born afflicted with weak kid neys. If the child urin ates, too often, if the urine scalds the flesh or if, when the child reaches an age when it should be able to control the passage, it Is yet afflicted with bed-wetting, depend upon it, the cause of the difficulty is kidney trouble, and the first step should be towards the treatment of these important organs. This unpleasant trouble is due to a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as most peopie suppose. Women as well as men are made mis erable with kidney and bladder trouble, and both need the same great remedy. The mild and the immediate effect of Sw&{rVip~Root is soon realized. Lie Vina: Her Stamp*. We find the following anecdotes in a Naples pep€5jr: "At the posfofflce yes terday, amid the large cro«1| gathered around the window, was a young Eng lish lady. handHome, well dressed and accompanied by her maid. The young lady had Just purchased some stamps and was about to affix them to a num ber ot letters which she held In her hand. Delicately tearing off a stamp, Blie said to her maid. Pull (sic) out your tongue.' And the maid, with Eng lish impassivity, thrust forth her tongue, while the mistress passed over It a postage stamp, which she subse quently stuck on a letter. She went through the entire package of letters, and for each one the obedient waiting maid thrust out her tongue for the mistress to moisten the stamp. Curi ous manners these English people have." The Canon and tbe Lsw^rr, The point of the following story lies In the important part which the "three penny bit" plays In church collections In England. Canon Blank was having a friendly gaipe of pool at the squire's, and one of his opponents was Wigsby, the barrister The canon lost a "life" and took from his pocket a threepenny piece to pay for it, which he placed on the edge of the table. "Oh," said Wigsby. "I see, canon, you have had youV,finger in the plate!" The canon dpw himself up to his full height, a g^)d six feet, and, looking the man of the law full in the fane said, "I'm surprised that you, Mr. Wlg6by, In tbe presence of this re spectable company, have the audacity to recognise your own paltry contribu tion!" Lamp* That Talk. Electric lamps not only can be made to talk, but also to sing. An ordinary arc light can be made to produce sounds in two ways. One Is by placing the arc In the circuit of a telephone Instead of the ordinary receiver, and the other Is by placing It in the circuit Instead of the ordinary transmitter. In either of these positions it will pronounce words, which can be heard distinctly at a considerable distance It naturally follows, also, that tbe elec trie arc can be| utilised as the receiver and also as the transmitter of a tele phone. Tk# French Horn. The French horn or cor de chasse is regarded by some musicians as the sweetest and mellowest of all the wind Instruments. In Beethoven's time it was little else than the old hunting horn, which, for the convenience of the mounted hunter, was arranged In spiral convolutions, to be slipped over the head and carried resting on one shoul der and under the opposite arm. The Germans still call It the waldhorn-- thai la, "forest horn." Actors' Snperat Itlona. The "Cry" of Silk. One of the most peculiar features about manufactured silk is the rustling sound familiar to every woman. In the silk trade they call It the "cry" or sometimes the "scroop." Of all textiles silk is the only material which pos sesses it. As everybody knows, the- sound Is heard especially when silk Is subjected to vfrlction. What is not so generally known is that the quality is found in silk yarn before it is woven. A skein of silk, unless it has been so treated as to kill this property In it, will when opened up emit tbe noise slightly. WThen tbe skein is squeezed in the hand, the sound becomes quite audible. The "cry" Is considered a very desir able quality In silk. Dyers try to de velop It as much as possible. O Bear* th» »The Kind Yuu Have Always Bought %,r tomnamkollim.
