Dep»rtmcati«f Agriculture Report For Week finding September 8,l®Ot. The weather the past week has been generally dry and favorable both for farm work and for maturing crops. There was, however, a good rain over most of the state Friday night, the effect of which was beneficial and which interrupted farm work'but little. Dur ing most of the week the weather was cool, but the latter , part was warmer. On the mornings of the 4th and 5th light frosts occurred in various parts of the state, especially in the northern district, but'no damage resulted. Con siderable plowing and preparing ground for fall seeding has been done, and in a few places some fields have been seeded. Though generally the ground is in good condition for seeding in some localities it is hard and difficult to pfow. It was brought into somewhat better condition, however, by the rain of - Friday night. Threshing has progressed rapidly dur ing the week, and in some localities is completed. Though the oool weather of the week has been unfavorable for the rapid advancement of corn toward maturity, other conditions have been very favorable and the crop has gener ally made satisfactory progress. Most correspondents report prospects of a very heavy yield. Considerable corn is already safe from injury by frost, espec ially in the southern part of the state, and much of it has been put in shock. The bulk of the crop will be safe by Sept 15 to 20, but in some localities it will not be safe before Oct. 1. Take Care of the Stomach. The man or woman whose digestion is perfect and whose stomach performs its every function is never sick. Kodol cleanses, purifies and sweetens the stom ach and cures positively and permanent ly all stomach troubles, indigestion and dyspepsia. It is the wonderful recon structive tonic that is making so many sick people well and weak people strong, by conveying to their bodies all the nourishment in the food they eat. Rev. J. H. Holladay, of Holladay, Miss., writes: Kodol has cured me. I consider it the best remedy I ever used for dys pepsia and stomach troubles. I was giv en up by physicians. Kodol saved my life. Take it after meals. Julia A. Story, McHenry; G. W. Besley, West McHenry. An Idol With Diamond By«a. It Is a curious fact and one scarcely known outside of Russia, and there hardly ever mentioned, that the fa mous Orloff diamond was once the right eye of the great idol Serringham in the templfc of Brahma. This pre cious gem was stolen at about the be ginning of the eighteenth century by a French soldier who ljad made a pre tense of being converted to the Hindoo religion in order to gain the confidence of the priests and admission to the temple. The Frenchman first sold the diamond for £2,000. On the next turn it was bought by a banker of Constan tinople for £12,000. The banker kept it until 1774 and then sold It to the Rus sian empress for £90,000 and a life pen sion. The gem has been In the Russian royal family ever since. As it is now set in the imperial scepter of Russia it presents a flattened, rose cut surfacc and weighs exactly 194^ carats. RICHARDSON'S A Remarkable Kecord. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has a remarkable record. It has been in use for over thirty years, during which time man^r million bottles have been sold and used. It has long been the standard aAd mtin reliance in the treat ment of croup in thousands of homes, yet during all this time no case has ever | been reported to manufacturers in which it failed to effect a cure. When given as soon as a child becomes hoarse or even as soon as the croupy cough I appears, it will prevent the attack. It I is pleasant to take, many children like it. It contains no opium or other harmful I substance and may be given as confi- | dently to a baby as an adult, For sale by all druggists. Vanity Tickled. During the early excesses of the French revolution a rabble of men and women were rioting in the streets of Paris. Lafayptte appeared and ordered a young artillery office^ to open fire upon them with two cannon. The of ficer begged the general to let him try first to persuade them to withdraw. 'It is useless to appeal to their rea son," said the general. "Certainly," answered the officer, 'and it is not to thfir reason, but to their vanity, I would appeal." The officer rode up to the front of the mob, doffed his cocked hat, pointed to the guns and said: 'Gentlemen will haye. the kindness to retire, for I am ordered to shoot down the rabble." The street was cleared at once, for none could brook the Idea of being classed with the scum of the city. lira Wkloh Hever Go Oil There ar» domestic fires burning la England today which have never been out for hundreds upon hundreds of years. •t the old fashioned farmhouses in the dales of Yorkshire peat is still burned. The fuel is obtained from th* moors, and stacks of it are kept by the farmers in their stack garths. The country roundabout Is noted foi its "glifuie cakes," which are made from dough baked In quaint pans sus pended over the peat fires. These fires are kept glowing from generation to generation, and the son warms himself at the fire which warm ed his sire and his grandsire and his grandsire's sire and which will warm his son and his son's son. There is a fire at Castleton, In the Whitby district, which has been burn ing for over 200 years. The record probably is held by a farmhouse at Os- motherby, in the same district. This fire has been burning for 500 years, and there are records to show that it has not been out during the last 800 years. • A Parson's Noble Act. "I want all the world to know,*' writes Rev. C. J. Budlong, of Ashaway, R. I., "what a thoroughly good and re liable medicine I found in Electric Bit ters. They cured me of jaundice and liver troubles that had caused me great suffering for many Tears. For a gen uine, all-around cure they excel any thing I ever saw." Electric Bitters are the surprise of all in their wonderfv.1 work in Liver, Kidney and Stomach troubles. Don't fail to try them. Only 50 cts. Satisfaction guaranteed by Jul ia A. Story^ Why He Wain't Impreaaod. The following story is told of a gar rulous victim of the Johnstown flood of 1889, who when he reached paradise ascended a cloud that served within the pearly gates as a rostrum and un dertook to thrill his new made ac quaintances among the shades with an account of the disaster through which he had passed. He was interrupted by a gray bearded old man in the group. "A mere bucketful--a mere bucketful!" the old fellow piped. "Don't waste so much time talking of a small affair like that!" The Johnstown man resented this and hunted up St. Peter, of whom he asked, "Who is that old, codger who seems to think our flood such a trifling matter?" "That?" said St Peter. "Why* that's Noah!" , Beware of the Knife. No profession has advanced moi e rap idly of late than surgery, but it should not be used except where absolutely nec essary. ' In cases of piles, for example it is not needed. DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve cures quickly and permanently. Unequaled for cuts, burns, bruises, skin diseases wounds. Accept no counter feits. "I was so tronbled with bleeding piles that I lost much blood and strength," says J. C. Phillips, Paris, 111. DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve cured me in a short time." Soothes and heals. Julia A. A southern woman speaks with pride of the many years of faithful, loving service rendered by her dusky house keeper. Not only is "Aunt Ca'line" valued for her executive ability, but her judgment is so Avise in most cases that her mistress has come to depend greatly upon her opinion in certain matters. "Do you think James would be a good man for us to take up into the mountains with us this summer, Aunt Ca'line?" she asked one day, referring to a handsome young darky who had been for Six weeks in her employ. Aunt Ca'line folded her arms and as sumed her most judicial aspect. "Missy Kate," she said firmly, "I done watch dat boy eber since he come hyer, an' I done test him.
