One of the most cruel and oold blood ed murders ever planned and nearly car ried to a horrible execution was frus trated in this city Monday afternoon, says the Marengo Sfews. Geo. Besley, better known as "Boston," had been on h drunken spree, for several days, but on Monday, not being able to borrow the funds to obtain booze with/ which to continue his debauch, v^s^Rob^r, hut despondent and in an ugly attitude toward everybody, especially himself. He had confided to several that he contemplated a horrible deed--the mur dering of a young lady and committing suicide. They did not believe he seri ously contemplated it, "but liis strange actions caused them to watch him Miss Anna McKeown of Riley was the lady whom he intended to kill. I seems that Besley had worked oh a farm near her home and became infat uated with her. She, never ih anyway encouraged bim, bat on the other hand , alway-4 spurned his attention.- Miss McKeown was in this city on business Monday^fternoon, and when she went to her carriage to go home Besley Went toh(®Pand asked the privilege of talking to her. She refused the request. He then asked her consent to ride home with her. This Was also deuied. Just before this conversation he entered W. H. Dunker's market and took a butcher knife, Which he concealed, and when the young lady attempted to get into the buggy he reached for the knife. Sam Ward and Ed Brown, who had been watching his maneuvers, prompt ly grabbed him betore he carried out his murderous design. Besley was soon after arrested and placed in the lockup, and the next morning taken before Jus tice P. T. Parkhurst for a prelimiuay examination and bound over to await the action of the grand jury in Septem- ber.
