Besley, West Mc Henry. State's Attorney Lowell, with Attor ney Chas. Wayne of Elgin as assistant, has caused the arrest of a number of Marengo "blind pig" Operators and the cases will be heard in Nunda. C. P. Barnes, attorney for the "blind pig" op erators, will represent them in th& suit. It promises to be a stubbornly, fought battle. .• • Barrington RevieW: A Barrjngton mother came out from Chicago Monday loaded with gifts for her little angel. After she had got her clothes straight ened, from contact with the Stale street crush, she said: "I've got a locopotive, a wagon, a mechanical contortionist and an automobile. That ought to satisfy our pet." "It ought to, but it won't," said her husband. "You want to get a hammer so he can smash them quick." Elgin Courier: As stated Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis of the Modern Busi ness college called the day students to gether and announced an address by At torney Frank Shopen. Mr. Shopen di rected his remarks to William Sexton of McHenry county, who has been working his way through school for the past two years. While Will is past 18 years of age he is the smallest student in college, and his progress has been so rapid that he frequently assists with the bookkeep ing and penmanship classes. Mr. Shop en presented Willie with a handsome gold watch and chain, a gift from bis fellow students. Mr. EUis had already provided him with a fine suit of clothes as a Christmas gift. Nunda Herald: The Herald is in re ceipt of a late song that has been placed on the market, entitled "When First We Met," and has been requested to speak as cordially of the effort as our critical mind and conscience will per mit, As the editor of the Herald does not know a demi semi-quaver from a bone tumor he will not be expected to give an extended notice oh this produc tion. We can say, however that the type used in printing the song is clear and plain, and the paper seems to be of the best rag. The design on the front page is artistic, and the words are aB tender as veal pork steak and ns poetic al as the song of a meadow lark on a May morning. The melody is sound and all right, with no wind galls or col lar marks. The harmony also seems to be in a healthy condition,, with, no no ticeable blemishes. The tonality, ac cording to our office boy, who knows all about it, is clear and resonant, and rests, so he says, on harmonic relations and melodic elements. Elgin Courier: Henry Dowel, who resides about seven miles southeast of Terra Cotta, on the Wauconda road, is in jail at Waukegan awaiting trial on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Dowel, it is alleged, drove his wife and her two sons out of the home and chased them to the house of a neighbor. He was armed with a shotgun, and as he neared the neighbor's house he stopped, loaded and cocked the gun, but did not discharge the same. Dowel was arrest ed and taken to Wauconda, where he was given a hearing before Justice Brooks. He pleaded guilty, and was held in bonds of $2,500. He failed to se° cnre bail, and in consequence is lan guishing in the jail at Waukegan. Mrs. Dowel was twice married. ^ She had two ns by her first husband, and it 1b claimed that these children have been the cause of ill-feeling on the part of the stepfather. Dowel is well known here, where he has frequently visited. Mrs. Dowel if also well known here. It Is said that Dowel was at one time quite wealthy, but that h<J is addicted to im bibing too freely of intoxicating liquors, and that he has spent * gqod deal of his money. V . Woodstock Sentinel: The executive committee of the McHenry County Ag ricultural board met at the court house Saturday morning, Dec. 17, and spent the day in looking over the situation and discussing mattere pertinent to welfare of the association. The Qarem- bejss who were in attendance w^re H. C. LeBrec, G. J. Haven, William Coon ey, C. W. Thompson, E. G. Turner, F. L. Hatch, C. jE Rowley, V. N, Ford, Wm. Desmond, M. Zimplemann, Geo. A. Hunt, Fremont Hoy and C. F. Dike. One of the matters attended to at this time was the election of a board of di rectors. It is now composed of the fol lowing named members: Wm. Des mond, M. Zimplemann, Geo. A. Bunt. Fremont Hoy, A. D. Osborn and F. L. Hatch. This board of directors was given power to transact such matters as may come up for disposal until the next meeting of the executive committee. The situation was thoroughly discus sed and it was resolved by the commit tee to hold down the expenses for the coming fair as much as possible. It was also agreed to see that the rules of the association were observed more closely. While the last fair is held to be a success in the matter of receipts, the committee feels the necessity of hav ing a larger balance to go toward wip ing out the debt that has accumulated during several past fairs. They have faith that it can be done. A number of the superintendents for the next fair were appointed at this meeting, but ad journed without finishing the list The task of choosing the remaining appoint ees has been left to the board of direct ors, who will give the list to the public when completed. Grip Quickly Knocked Oo$t - "Some weeks ago during the severe winter weather both my wife and my self contracted severe colds which speed ily developed into the worst kind of la grippe with all its miserable symptoms," says Mr. J. S. Egleston of Maple Land ing, Iowa. "Knees and joints aching, muscles sore, head stopped up, eyes and nose running, with alternate spells of chills and fever. We began using Chamberlain's -Cough Remedy, aiding the same with a dose of Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets, and by its liberal use soon completely knocked out the grip." It is a good plan to take a dose of the tablets when you have a cold. They promote a healthy action of the bowels, liver and kidneys which is al ways beneficial when the system is con gested by a cold or attack of the grip. For sale by all druggists.
