OYAMA is undoubtedly a great general, but as Tom Lawson might say, it was "system" rather than work of any indi vidual that defeated the Russians. DR. DOWIE says he can "raise the dead," bnt he does not do so, probably because the sheriff keeps him busy all the time trying to "raise money." IT looks as if the present Russian ad ministration had piled up enough troub le t<$ insure the next Czar opportunity to display all the ability he possesses. IT becomes more and more apparent that if Mr. Roosevelt intends to sepa rate any Panama, canal commissioner from his job, he will have to chloroform him first. A MOVEMENT is under contemplation -to restore Alton B. Parker to the bench Perhaps he is sorry he ever stepped down from it; and would like one more chance at it. Thursday, March 33* 1905* AUDITOR'S MEETING. Notioe is hereby given that the board of "auditors of the town of McHenry, county of McHenry, and state of Illi nois, will meet on the 28th day of March, 1905, in the town clerk's office % in West McHenry, 111,, at two o'clock p. m., to audit any and all bills against said town and to transact such business as may come before the meeting. Bills against the town of McHenry may be left with the supervisor or the undersigned. Dated at McHenry this 15th day of March, 1905.. CHAS. B. HARK SEN, Town Clerk. BANGOR, ME,, has elected a demo cratic mayor for the first time in fifty years and thereby succeeded in getting its name in several newspapers through out the country. Good ad. A MINNESOTA matron is a grand mother at 34. This seems like a little too young even for the Oslerian theory. Mr. Osier may change the chloroform age from 60 to a younger period. VILLAGE CAUCl'S. The voters of the village of McHenry are requested to meet at the village hall on Saturday, April 1, at2 o'clock p. m., to place in nomination candidates for the following offices; One village pres ident, three trustees and one village clerk, to be elected at an election to be heljl on Tuesday, April 4, 1905. - JOHN STOFFEL, Village Clerk. JAPAN is merely waiting for Russia to ay "enough." KUROPATKIN is not very strong at the bat, but he's a gre-it base runner. PERHAPS Kuropatkin wants to resign ' While there is something to resign from. RUSSIA "believas" that Kuropatkin lias been whipped. He is certain of it. THE Czar'might get rid of a lot of trouble by sending those grand dukes to the front. IF, the postmasters don't keep straight, " Fourth Assistant DeGraw can put them on the gridiron. INDIANA has expelled the cigarette, but will allow her novelists to keep, on hitting the pipe. NEW JERSEY his difficulty in under- st anding this disposition of Kanmya to be rude to the trusts. OH IF the war goes on much'longer the people at St. Petersburg are likely to get a "closer view" of it. - THE Japanese did not hesitate to take t he Russians at their word whea they said the war was not over. SENATOR SMOOT has not been invited to address the congress of toothers. This was a great oversight. FEDERAL officials in Colorado are de manding that the railroads of the state observe the safety-appliance law. It would be a. great thing for Colorado if she would have a safety-appliance- law enforced among her politicians. JOHN WARNER, of South Dakota, asks to have his pension discontinued because he has recovered from the dis abilities by reason of which the peusion was originally granted. Railroads should read a chapter out of the book of the experience of the Standard oil company with Kansas and perhaps they would discover that retaliation is a game two can play at. Wisconsin may get mad and build its own railroads. Women as Well as Men Are Made Miserable by Kidney Trouble. ® : Kidney trouble preys upon thernlnd,<ftsi courages and lessens ambition; beauty, vigor and cheerfulness soon disappear when the kid neys are out of order or diseased. Kidney trouble has become so prevalent that it is not uncommon for a child to be born S? afflicted with weak kid neys. If the child urin ates to6 often, if the urine scalds the flesh or if, when the child reaches an age when it should be able to control the passage, it -ia> yet afflicted with bed-wetting, depend upon it. the cause of the difficulty is kidney trouble, and the first step should be towards the treatment of these important organs. This unpleasant trouble is due tff a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as most people suppose. Women as well as men are made mis erable with kidney and bladder trouble, and both need the same freat remedy. The mild and the immediate effect of Swamp-Root is soon realized. IT would seem that even Count Casini ought tb be able to "see the, end" some where in the dim distance by this time THE surgeons cannot be blamed for defending the vermiform appendix. It baa been useful and profitable to them. You never know how much of a family a congressman has until he starts on a jqnket at the government's expense PERHAPS the promoters of that lob ster trust got their first idea from Mrs Chadwick, who operated hers so success fully. THE Kansas legislature has ad jonrned, but the beef trust and the Standard oil are still in "executive see sion." • MR, BRYAN while in Wisconsin eu logized Mr. LaFolIette. Compliments are becoming as popular with Mr. Bryan as epigrams. How a Chinaman Smokes. Of all smokers the Chinaman goes to the greatest trouble and obtains the least result. "He carries," says an ob server, "a little box almost twice the size of an ordinary silver cigarette case. This is half filled with water. In one end is a removable tiny tube to serve as a pipe. At the other end is'tlie pipestem. First of all he takes out the tube and blows through it to remove all blockage. Then he fumbles through his -awkward clothes, searching for to bacco, and produces a bit of rag, in which it is wrapped. Carefully he ex tracts a wad of tobacco, puts away his rag and slowly plugs the tube, .which holds perhaps the tenth part of an or dinary cigarette. But lie nevter has any matches, so he has to borrow or hunt out a brown paper stem and light it. It glows for a long time and can be puffed into flame again. He gives a long draw, slowly enjoying it to its full extent for a minute or two, then back again through the old routine to find his tobacco, fill his pipe and get It lighted." Remarkable Encapei. One of the most remarkable escapes from drowning ou record was that of a man whom a wave picked off from a vessel, washed into the seu off Lundy island, near the Devonshire coast, Eng land, and then returned to his ship. But" it was not so remarkable a case as that which is suggested by an epi taph said still to exist in Jamaica: "Here lieth the body of Lewis Gaidy, Esq., who died on the 22d of Septem ber, 1787, aged SO. He was born at Montpellier, In France, which place he left for his religion and settled on this Island, where in the great earthquake, 1672, he was swallowed up and, by the wonderful providence of God, by a second shock was thrown out into the sea, where he continued swimming un til he wits taken up by a boat and thus miraculously saved. He afterward lived in great reputation and died uni versally lamented." . Forbear and Forgtve. Do not expect too much from others, but remember that all have some ill na ture. whose occasional outcropping we must expect, and that we must forbear and forgive, as we often desire for bearance an^ forgiveness ourselves. The words 5 ^'esquire" and "gentle man" are among those which fall from our lips daily, and yet most of us would be rather puzzled to say in pre cise language what we mean by them, In a county court case a schoolmaster was ruled-out of the "gentleman" list. Legal distinctions ou the point have been anomalous. The following are not "gentlemen:" A buyer of silks, a so licitor's clerk out of regular ;work, a commission agent and a a audit office clerk. It is sold in almost all the civilized coun tries of the globe, If the cod fish became extinct it would be a world-wide calam ity, lnjcause the oil that comes from its liver surpasses all other fats in nourishing and life-giving properties. Thirty years ago the proprietors of Scott's Emul sion found a way of preparing cod li ver oil so that everyone can take it and get the full value of the oil without the objectionable taste.
