If Mexico really goes on a gold basis , all we can say is that it has no regard for Mr. Bryan's feelings. - An Iowa scientist says that persons should wed their opposites. The divorce record indicates that they do. The following clipping was taken from the Montezuma (Ind.) Herald, at which place Rev. Edward Cobb, former ly of McHenry, is conducting the Lent en services: \ "Lenten serviceat theCatbolicchnrch last Monday evening Was well attended by non-Catholics, and seats and stand ing room were filled to their fullest ca pacity. The services consisted of the Stations of the Cross, which is a devo tion that represents the sorrowful jour ney of our Lord to Calvary where he was crucified. "Father Cobb, before beginning the service, gave a brief explanation of why the pictures were used. He said they, were only for the purpose of reminding the people 6f the terrible sufferings our Divine Lord had to undergo on his way to Cavalry's Mount where he gave up his life for the sins of the world. They are hot adored and worshipped by the Catholics, as is oft times said by non- Catholics who are not versed or famil iar with the Catholic religion. He says that the church teaches that any Catho lie who worships or adorer pictures or statuary or anything other than God are guilty of a mortal sin, which would damn their souls should they die with out repentance. "He said Catholics should not be cen sured for having pictured of God and the Blessed Mother in Eheir churches and homes when non-Catholics can have pictures of their deceased friends adorn the walls of their homes for the same purpose. No one would ac cuse a person of idolatry for having a picture of a dear one hanging upon the wall of their home, yet the same people who adorn their homes, public halls and court houses with pictures of friends and prominent politicians will accuse the Catholics of idolatry when they hang up a picture of our beloved Lord and bis blessed Mother. ' 'After the close of the devotion Fath er Cobb lectured on the Holiness of the Catholic church, which subject he ex pounded with force and ability, cover ing every point he raised with proofs." KMKKALD PARK. Geo. Peterson visited Berkircber Bros. Sunday. Mrs. R. J. Sutton visited Mrs. James Hughes last Tuesday. Miss Mary Gibbs of Barreville visited the Misses Sutton Sunday. Gibbs were callers in this yicinity Sunday af ter noon, Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Burns and son, Kenneth, of Chicago spent Sunday at thl&ir cos tape. John Keiter of Chicago visited at R. J. John Costello of Elgin spent a few days the last of the week with his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Walsh. W m. Miss Mamie Smith held the lucky number (37) on a beautiful sofa pillow which was raffled off at the echool house last Friday for benefit of the school. its* The French are reported to be invest ing in Japanese bonds. It's a wise bet tor who knows when to hedge. That Chicago grand jurry evidently * failed to get a copy of the government's / report on the beef trust investigation. Next time that Rockafeller tries to give the congregationalists $100,000 he will probably sign the check "A Friend." The best way is to let the lobster trust and the chorus girls fight it out, in which case there would be a hot time. Never again can Mexico hope to oc cupy a conspicuous place in the most eloquent section of Mr. Bryan's speeches. The reception committee at Harbin is said to be undecided whether to ex pect Linevitch or Oyama as its first guest. Fill a bottle or common glass with your water and let It stand twenty-four hours; a sediment or set tling indicates an unhealthy condi tion of the kid neys; if It stains your linen it is evidence of kid ney trouble; too frequent desire to pass it or pain in the back is also convincing proof that the kidneys and blad der are out of order. "I1The Plaindealer does not hold itself respon sible for the opinions expressed in this col umn.--Ed.] It so happened that a certain young business man of Chicago had dealings with a saloon keeper whose place of "business"is in the down-town district, but who lives in a prohibition district. At the clone of the transaction conver sation turned upon temperance and thd liquor traffic. "Suppose," said the yonng man, "the matter of granting saloon licences in the neighborhood where you live were submitted to the voters, bow would yon vote?" "I would vote against the prop osition, " said the saloonist. "My prop erty there would depreciate in value $1,500 if saloons were to open, and I would be a fool to vote them in." Taxpayers could get some good point ers from the men who know this busi ness from the inside. This man knows that the saloon raises taxes, when some blind people are tricked into believing that they "raise" revenue. He knows that the saloon contaminates the neighborhood that harbors it, and he wants to live where it is not. He asks the license laws to protect his busi ness, and prohibition laws his home. When will property owners awake to their economic folly, and see as clearly as does the saloonist the paralyzing in iluence of the traffic in strong drink? ARE GIVEN <5 CHARTER. Eastern Star Lodge Organised Last Sat urday Evening. Oyama declares that he has a high regard for the Russian soldiers. Often it must appear to them that it is a sky- high regard. Perhaps Dr. Osier is right if he means men over 60 who part their hair in the middle and smoke eigaretsshould be chloroformed. With the first lull in the proceedings we may expect a report from Colorado as to h >w they are getting along with onjy one governor. "The Rnesian peace movement is ad vancing," says a Lend on cable. It is a real relief to find something with a Rus sian label advancing. 1om L Johnson is working bard on his toboggan ncheme by which he hopes to have travelers slide from Chicago to New York in a "oonple of hours. "Mothers buy it for croupy children, railroad men buy it for severe coughs and elderly people buy it for la grippe," say Moore Bros., Eldon, Iowa. "We sell more of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy than any other kind. It seems to have taken the lead over several other good brands." There is no question but this medicine is the best that can be prd- cured for coughs and colds, whether it be a child or an adult that is afflicted. It always cures and cures quickly. Sold by all druggists. A Neat Edition. Last Saturday morning we, as well as a ndmber of McHenry's business men" received from the former manager of The Plaindealer, C. D. Schoonuiaker, an Industrial Edition of The Genoa Republican-Journal. The edition is one of the largest, as well as the best, that we have ever seen. It contains half tone cuts of the various enterprises of the hustling little city of Genoa, its churches, fine residences and its busi ness people, with a very capable write up of each and every one. The press- work and mechanical part of the edition is superb. Mr. Schoonmaker has given the people of Genoa, just as we pre dieted, one of the best papers she has ever had or ever will have. We con gratulate our former manager upon the good success with which he is meeting Elgin Club Will Meet.
