The young men went to the creek abont five o'clock Snnday evening. Chnrchill, who was a good swimmer, made his way across the creek and back and then started to recross. When about half way across he suddenly called for help. No other member of the party was able to swim and they were power less to help the drowning man. Harvard Independent: Lientenant James M. Phalen, who has been a regu lar army surgeon in the Philippines for the past three years, arrived home last night. Dr. and Mrs. Phalen sailed from Manila May 15, on the General Logan, arriving in San Francisco Tues day of last week. Mrs. Phalen re mained in that city to visit relatives, while Dr. Phalen took the opportunity to make a short visit with his parents before leaving tomorrow morning for Little Rock, Ark., where he has been assigned. He will secure a furlough later in the summer, and in company with his wife, will make an extensive visit here. At the time of the recent great naval battle between the Japanese and Russian fleets, Dr. and Mrs. Phalen were at Nagasaki, Japan, only a hundred miles away from the scene of the con flict. ' , L Woodstock Republican: Throngfa the (Curtesy and kindness of Attorney Frank R. Jackman the editor and wife were enabled to enjoy a delightfnl ride through the eastern part of the county on Tuesday last. Going first to Pistakee where we saw a 45-pound muscallonge caught in that lake on the 29th of April by Ben Stilling's men, the fish measur ing fifty-four inches in length, we stopped at the conservatory of John F. Miller at Rosedale, where beautiful flowers are growing for shipment on or der to any part of the country, later passing through Johnsburph, having supper at the Riverside at East McHen ry, where Landlord Inness is giving the people the best that the market affords, and thence enjoying the ride from Mc Henry to Nunda, throngh as fine a country as lies in McHenry county. We reached home before 9 o'clock, the entire trip of more than forty miles being made without accident in Mr. Jackman's beautiful new Rambler au tomobile. Bound hand and foot and gagged, the maiden was put in a gunnysack, and, unable to move or scream, felt herself carried down a flight of stairs, put into a buggy and then driven down the street. Ineffectually she tried to re lease herself from the gag. Alas! She was bound too securely. Finally the conveyance stopped. She was agam carried into a building, fainting and gasping for breath; the sack was taken from Jier head. The villian, still masked, took the gag from her mouth, his eyes gleaming like coals of fire- thru his black mask, released her and hissed thru hie tightly clenched teeth: "There, my pretty bird, you may scream and yell as loud as you please; no human ear will ever reach yon. You are in my power. Do you hear? Totally within my power." "Where, O, where am I?" she gasped. "In a store that never ad vertises," was rthe response. "Alas! alas!" she moaned. ' 'No power on earth can save me; no one will look for me here," and the poor girl fainted. Cuban Diarrhoea. U. S. soldiers who served in Cuba during the Spanish war know what this disease is, and that ordinary remedies have little more effect than so mnch water. Cuban diarrhoea is almost as severe and dangerous as a mild at tack of cholera. . There is one remedy however, that can always be depended on, as will be seen by the following cer tificate from Mrs. Minnie Jacobs of Houston, Texas: "I hereby certify that Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy cured my husband of severe attack of Cuban diarrhoea, which he brought home from Cuba. We had several doctors but they did him no good. One bottle of this remedy cared him, as our neighbors will testify, thank God for so valuable a medicine.' Sold by all druggists. The Plaindealer will be sent to any address on trial three months for twen ty-five cents, and will be discontinued at the expiration of time unless other wise ordered. Try it. The kidneys are your blood purifiers, they fil ter out the waste or impurities in the blood. If they are sick or out of order, they fail to do their work. Pains, aches and rheu matism come from ex cess of uric acid in the blood, due to neglected kidney trouble. Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady heart beats, and makes one feel as though they had heart trouble, because the heart is over-working in pumping thick, kidney- poinoned blood through veins and arteries. It used to be considered that only urinary troubles were to be traced to the kidneys, but now modern science proves that nearly all constitutional diseases have their begin ning in kidney trouble. If you are sick you can make no mistake by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is soon realised. It stands the highest for its wonderful cures of the most distressing cases •and is sold on its merits *- by all druggists in fifty- cent and one-dollar siz es. You may have a Sample bottle by mail . Home off Swamp-Root, free, also pamphlet telling you how to find out if you have kidney or bladder trouble. Mention this paper when writing Dr. Kilmer k Co., Binghamton, N. Y. Dont make any mistake, but remem ber the name, Swamp-Root, Dr. Kil mer's Swamp-Root, and the address, Binghamton. N. Y., on every bottle. Newspaper cartoons have become a most popular featnre of np-to- date metropolitan daily papers. The unique and catchy drawing now appear ing daily on the front page of The Chi cago Record-Herald is one of the many special features of the great paper. The Record Hecald has been fortunate in securing one of the best yonng artists in the country to carry out its policy of presenting each day a hnmorous and good-natured cartoon. Mr. Ralph Wil der is one of the coming men in news paper work. His success has been as pronounced as it has been rapid. He shows all of the good-natnred humor and the brighter side of everyday com mon life which has carried his work to a very popular success. His drawings are on all of the various subjects of pop ular interest, political and otherwise. Current events are vividly portrayed in a way that pleases, yet often gi ving just criticism in a way that does not offend. Through his excellent work on eastern magazines Mr. Wilder first attracted universal attention. The Record-Her ald recognized in him at once a cartoon ist of nnnsual promise and congratulates its readers on having been fortunate enough to engage him. The Pacific Norlh-Wviit. A complete and interesting presen tation of the scenic beanty and the rich natural resources and rapid growth of the Pacific Northwest are set forth in a beautifully illustrated booklet recently issued by the Chicago & North-Western Ry., which will be sent to any address an receipt of 4 cents in stamps. The Lewis & Clarke Exposition with the very low excursion rates and personal ly conducted tours in connection there with over the North-Western Line from Chicago and the East have created an interest in this subject never before equaled.
