Father Hayes, the English Catholic priest, who is a worthy follower of Father Matthew, is working in Austral­ ia. Oyer 21,000 men and women in that country hare taken the total absti­ nence pledge. A public executioner in England de­ clare* he never heard of a total abstain­ er being hanged, and that of the 900 executions with which he has been con­ nected all but twenty-five were due to drjnk. The Catholic Total Abstinent^ Union of America held the most successful convention of its history at Wilke9barre, Pa., Angnst 9-12, eight hundred dele­ gates being in attendance. Harvard Herald: The McHenry coun­ ty board of review, of which ^Supervisor James Lake of this city was chairman, his two associates being Wm. Desmond and Emil Arnold, has practically cum- pteied IM work, after devoting 51 .days in going over the assessments in the various towns in the county, mafciug many changes and revisions, and in their report to the board of supervisors in session at Woodstock Tuesday they submitted a complete review of their findings, the same being well prepared, and it reflected credit on the review board, who have served the county ably and well. As a result of their work the increase in personal property amounts to $396,- 980 and in the real estate the increase foots up $15,180. The largest increase in real estate was made in Marengo, where it was boosted np $5,800. Che­ mung comes next, with $5,100, and Mc- Henry third, with $2,100, In the personal property increase He- Henry stands at the head, the increase there amounting tb $102,423. Dorr stands second, with $87,875, and Algon­ quin third, $48,985. Marengo is fourth, with $47,895, and Chemung stands fifth, with $39,525.
