Encllih Railway Expert'* View*. "The war between Japan and Russia and the peace settlement are bound to have an important effect on the trans portation in America. Transportation will receive a great stimulus, especially between the United States and Japan hipan should n«e more American wheat, and flour. A period of great prosperity for transportation companies should follow the ending of the war " Such is the prediction of Sir Charles Evan Smith ot'Xiondon. England, in an interview in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Sir Charles is one of the foremost, British authorities on transportation. He is the president of the Marconi wire less telegraphy system, president of the state tramways in old Mexico and of railways in Lisbou, Portugal and in Chili. Formerly he was in the diplo matic service of Great Britan. In all my travel" said he, "I have seen no country like America, and es pecially no country like' the West.. The development of transportation in America is simply marvelous. There is nothiug in Great Britan or Europe that can compare with it. Unless people have adequate means of transportation tbey an conduct scarcely any business suc cessfully, a fact to which your people ate very alert. How much has been ac- tomp!ished by your railways in a com paratively short time! England was a garden prepared for railroads, bnt here they had to plow their way through mountains and across rivers. It is a comparatively short time since the first railroad was built in America. There may be instances where some railways charge too high rates and do not give as good service as they should, but these are the exceptions and not as a rule. "I do not believe that government own ership is a good thing and I cannot see that any scheme for government control will improve railway service or reduce rates. Government officials naturally cannot hope to know more about the successful operation of railways than railroad men, who have made railroad operation a life study."--Edwardsville Republican, Octobers, 1905. By applying an antiseptic dressing to wounds, bruises, burns and like injuries before inflammation sets in, they may be healed without maturation and in about one-third the time required by the old treatment. This is the greatest dis covery and triumph of modern surgery. Chamberlain's Pain Balm acts on tbis same principle. It is an antiseptic and when applied to such injuries, causes them to heal very quickly. It also al lays the pain and soreness and prevents any danger of blood poisoning.
