[A leefon froiu Nehemiah ] * Nehemiah, captive in Babylon, longed to rebuild the walls aronnd bis native city; JernsAlem. He was afraid the king would not let him go so he prayed to God (Neheuiiah 1, 5-11). Notice he counted himself among thoBe who had dealt corrnptly Hgainftt the Lord ai had not kept His commandments or estatutes or judgments, although p< sonally he bad kept the la*^ as best be could. He said also, "Remember the word, if ye transgress, I will scatter thee; but if ye torn nnto ine and keep my commandments aud do them, though there were of yon cast ont nnto the nt- termost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thpuoe.' " v ^ Ar taxerxes, the king; noticed MfeMte- miab's sad face and ankecflfim tbe cause and afterward what mjnest he would make. Nehemiah prayed to God before tuaking his request to Artazerxes and was granted the privilege to no, and Was provided with men and materials to assist in the building, and provisions to last them on their journey. As soon as they started to bnild, how ever, their trouble began. Saitballat, leader of the stirronnding country, laughed them to scorn, but Nehemiah WHH determined and said: "The Lord of Heaven will prosper us." When Saaballat found the walls in progress he said to his people: "What do these feeble Jews? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they make an end in a day? Will they revive the stones ont of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?" Tobiah said: "The walls are so weak a fox can break through." Bnt the "feeble Jews" persevered in the work and when San- ballat again interfered they prayed to God and set a watch day and night. But after a season some of the workers became discouraged and said: "There is so much rubbish to dear away we cannot build." Jews inside the city said: "The enemies are plotting against you." But still Nehemiah would not give up; he set leaders to encourage, watch over, and protect their own fam ilies He said to them: "Be not afraid of'theui, remember the Lord which is great and terrible, and fight for your- brethern, your sons, yonr daughters, yonr .wives and your houses." When the wall was completed Nehe miah was requested to go into the tem ple that be might not be slain, but he said: "Should snch a man as I flee? And who is there, that being as I am. wonld go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in." He afterward found out that the man who told him was hired for that purpose that he might be accused of sinning. The women of the White Ribbon hand are sad because of the broken condition of the walls of righteousness in our na tion. Tfie King, Jesus Christ, sends them out with co-laborers to rebuild the walls, and weapons to fight tbe enemy. Leaders of the liquor traffic devise all sorts of means to hinder and discourage tbe work. Some workers become t'red and ready to give up, but we have good leaders who are ever saying: "Be not afraid: worlr for thesake of your friends, your husbands, your sons, your daugh ters and your country". .With snch lead ers, guided and directed by a Heavenly Father who is strong in battle and mighty to save, success is sure to follow.
