CP- Murray, who lives sooth of this village, lost a child aged about seven months, oil Sunday last. We believe membraneous croup was the cause. Captain Hill informs a? that 'another steamboat will be put upon Fox river as early as possible this spring;, further particulars of which will be given as soon as the working plans are matured. Wm. Wait, of Kansas City, son of Lewis Wait, spent Saturday and Sun day with his parents in this village He was on his way East to purchase music al instruments, being al»out to open a store of that kind it: Kansas City. Mrs. F. A. Hebard, who is spending the winter in the East, was unfortunate enough to be in a bad railroad sgmsh up. somewhere in Vermont, week before last, but fortunately escaped uninjured, although the cars were a total wreck. It would seem almost a miracle that she escaped with her life. Matthews'"cheese factory near Barre- ville was burned on Tuesday evening about 8 o'clock. The fire was plainly seen from thUi village, -hut none were able to-locate it. We did not learri the cause nor the ainonnt <»f loss. The fac tory was in active operation, and was; doing a good business It cannot fail to be a severe loss to Mr. Matthews. Doran & Co.'s butter and cheese fac tory, to be bnilt in this village, is now a fixed fact. The contract for the stone work has been let to J. and W. Thurl- well, and negotiations for the carpenter work are in progress. The building is to be 33x50, with a stone basement, and wing or engine room 16x16 The stones are all on the ground and the work will be pushed forward as rapidly as the weather will permit, and it is expected the building will be finished and ready to commence operations by May 1st at the farthest. Doran, under whose per- sonalsupervision the work goes on. will spare no pains or money, and when com pleted he expects to have one of the fin est arranged factories to be found in the northwest. From present indications the coming season promises to be a lively one at Fox Lake. On Monday Messers A. WiHey, E. Baumann, Phil Henne, J.B Sullivan and J. M. Miller, of the Fox Lake Fish ing and Hunting club, went np to the lake to make arrangements to bnild a large addition to their club house. We understand they propose to enlarge' by putting a wing on each side, which will make it one of the finest buildings on t he lake. The Cedar Island chib are al so putting an addition to their club house, workmen being on the gronnd, hauling lumber, etc. We also lear that the new Anrora club will put up a handsome club house early in the spring on the grounds purchased by them last season. Rumor also says Mr. Willey contemplates building a summer resi dence near the one he lately sold to the Fox Lake club. A new steamboat will nlso be built by the two Chicago clubs, to run between McHenry and the lakes and will be ready to put upon the river us soon as navigation opens. These are hut a few of the many improvements contemplated at this popular stfmmer resort the coming season, and as they progress we Bhall speak of them more it length. That Fox Lake is bound to he the resort for those who are looking for real pleasure and good hunting and fishing is beyond question. Fishermen of this vicinity who. think that the Fox river is far overstocked with that much ridiculed fish, the Ger man carp, and perhaps it is, should read a report which comes froui Red Wing, Minn., a town on the Missitmippi river. It will be remenbared that several months ago Fox river was seined in dif ferent localities, in hope of ridding the waterway of quantities of the fish, which have beco me so prevalent. The same scheme has been carried ont, but more successfully, at Red Wing, although the work was more an effort for money making on the part of those engaged than was the local seining. The report from the Minnesota town states that every now and then some fisherman bagged 5,000 pounds of the rough-scaled fish at one time and that single hauls of seven, ten and even fif teen thousand pounds have been record ed in several instances. The biggest haul yet made rewarded one fisherman %ith 27,000 pounds of the carp, weighing from a few pounds Hpiece to as high as thirty pounds The catch was hauled away, making twelve large sleigh loads, and was later sold to a New York dealer for 8 J cents per pound, giving the man wh'otook the fish from the river $8(M). x '" The net used when this catcli was made is 700 feet long and the services of two men, who worked for two hours, were required before , all had been re moved from the meshes. Big easttrn fish dealers are constantly on the look out for large catches of carp and after baying them they ship them east, Wfhece a good profit is realized.
