CONN, JR., Superintendent, Woodstock. Illinois. The general plan adopted two years ago will be continued in the coming school exhibit at the County Fair. There will t be no premiums. However, the necessary expenses of the superintendents, principals and teachers making the exhibits will be paid by the Fair Association. This is done for the following reasons: , 1st. The aim of this department is not of a competitive nature, but' educational. Commendable, not specially pre pared, work is shown in order that the school sentiment of the entire county may be raised and enlivened. In truth, the practice of making "special preparation" for the fair should be condemned. The exhibit should be composed of the regular work of the school. 2nd. The offering of premiums emphasizes the material side of the exhibit too greatly; Furthermore, it does not make a provision for the continuance of this department, as does the present method under which the expenses are in sured. Teachers and superintendents cannot long maintain great enthusiasm for a work that is unremunerative and depletes their purses. SCHOOLS ARE URGED TO MAKE EXHIBITS. Every school in the county is earnestly requested to make an exhibit of some of their regular work. As stated previously, "special preparation" is undesirable and really detrimental. Schools have their individual virtues and strong qualities. These may well be brought to the attention of the public. To seek appreciation and recognition is good. To seek to uplift other communities through the instrumentali ties of their schools is better. This is the real end of the fair exhibit, and the genuine worth of the exhibit depends on how much it contributes to this end. The nature of the exhibit demands that manuscripts be somewhat limited. Pictures ol rooms, school buildings, yards, apparatus and furniture, are practicable. Science books, records, specimens, and equipment are acceptable exhibits. A chart showing some interesting school statistics, artistic daily programs, courses oi study, school annuals, etc., make good material for exhi bition. Plans for school gardens, products of school gar dens, manual training work, drawings, paintings, etc., are also suggested. A model country school in miniature would be an excellent piece of work for some progressive country teacher to place before the public. SPACE FOR THE EXHIBIT should be reserved in advance of the day on which the ex hibit is to be arranged. All work should be in place by Monday night. Country teachers will bring their own ex hibits and see to the arrangement of same. Previous to this year the Township Chairmen have attended to this work. LET US HAVE A RECORD-BREAKING EXHIBIT. Respectfully, G. W. CONN, -JR., Co. Supt. * ' ' Class O--Antiquity MBS. LENA SEII.ER, Superintendent, Woodstock, HI This department consists principally of pioneer relics which will be housdd in the "old log cabin" built by Jonathan Imeson on English Prairie in 1836. This cabin is located on the fair grounds just north of the Agricultural Building. On account of the "Home-Coming Festival" to be held in connection with the fair, it is desired to make'this depart ment of unusual interest, and persons having interesting rel ics of any kind which they are willing to have placed on ex hibition are requested to correspond with Mrs. Lena Seller, Superintendent, Woodstock, 111. No premiums can be awarded in this department, but un usual care and precaution will be taken to insure the safety of articles while <on exhibition and the return of same to owners at. the close of the fair.
