COUNTY 15 STIRRED BY MURDER- lai^ of Voang Swede One lp Cnder Hen Hoaae N«»t Marengo. t Marengo, m., Oct. 81.--McHenry county authorities are facing one of the meet perplexing murder mysteries in the history of the county. This morning the body of Oscar Ho- gannoo, a young Swede, who had been miming since last Saturday, was found buried in the ground under a hen house on the farm of John Bedford, four miles north of this city. Bedford, who has been missing since Saturday, is suspected of the murder. He H»» evidently skipped the country and no trace has teen found of him sin06 the evening of the day on which both man disappeared. Hoganson, who was a single man, re- aided alone on the farm of Frank Rich ards, which adjoins the farm on which Bedford made his home. He had not been seen about the place since last Sat urday and a few days ago several par tial were sent out to search for him. Sheriff Wandrack, of Woodstock, finally took a hand in the search and thi# morning Hoganson's body was lo cated, buried two feet in the earth nn- der the hen house on the Bedford place. A bullet hole in the temple showed |gw ***» young man had met his tragic > horses, which are also missing {run the Hoganson plaoe, may give a flint to the murderer. Saturday night a mb answering to the description of Bedford was seen driving south toward Msreesre,. leasing' three horses, in ap- jp«rt»*rr Uk# those owned by Hoganson. Bedford has not been sera since Sat •riaj night and neither the authorities of the city of Marengo nor of McHenry county hare any clue as to his present whereabouts. A coroner's inquest is Mag held this afternoon. According to neighbors Hoganson and Bedford had apparently been the best of friends, nothing in their dealings of fe- oart days tending to show that there t any enmity between them. He has the deco rations well started and is preparing his pupils for the contest. Mr. Mullen ift one of the most progressive teachers of the county. One of the prettiest country schools of McHenry county is located in the town of Burton. It is in district number ten and is known as the Creek school. Nature has given it a special endow ment in the way of grand oak trees and a pleasing perspective, but the school directors were not content to let Nature be the "whole thing" and began im proving where she left off by building one of the beet fences about the prem ises there is in the county. Two neatly constructed turnstiles adorn the en trances and are models of neatness as well as utility. Stray cattle find neither welcome nor food in this well kept yard and the teacher and pupils are encour aged in their work of beautifying by the assurance that their handiwork is not at the mercy of Peter Tumbledown's straying cattle. The directors are Au- drew Stevens, B. D. Bell and Mrs. Wm. Watts. The teacher is Mr. Walter Winn. Another country school that has made commendable progress along theee lines is district number thirty in the town of Richmond and is known as the Mont- elona school. The buildings were all recently repainted and the yard sur rounded by an excellent fence. It is now, as eyery school should be, a place of beauty in the community. The ceunty superintendent, accompanied by Supt. L>owman of Hebron and Dr.. Hoi- lister, university inspector of high schools, recently visited the school, but found it vacated and undergoing a thoro disinfection. We were subsequently in formed that there bad been a case of diphtheria/in the neighborhood and the directors had taken this precaution to prevent the spreading of the disease. While we lost the opportunity to see the school in session, nevertheless we were pleased with this evidence of intelligent performance of duty on the part of the directors. May their • ktnd increase. The directors are W. H. Tamblyn, Wm. A. Stephan and Alfred Johnson. The teacher is Miss Lois Fuller. TVlfl II AKham -- I 1-- *1 3J • * "uwtuu ouuuui vuuQing Was glV0D a thoro cleaning and received a liberal application of paint during the vacation season, The school has started out in in unusually promising manner for the coming year. Supt. Lowman and his crop of assistants are putting forth their best efforts for the educational welfare of the community. The Hebron schools are handicapped, a majority of the citi zens are already aware of this fact, by the lack of three things: more room and better for the primary grades, a larger playground for the older grades, and an equipment for laboratory science and manual training. We hope they will soon be able to solve the problem of more room. The teachers are: Miss Agnes Ghmther, high school principal, Miss Florence Brigham, grammer grade, Misses Nina Woodbury and Myrtle Nichols, intermediate grades, and Miss Kate Seaman, primary. The directors are Dr. E. A. Mead, Louis Vogel and N. B. Manor. The meeting of school directors, trus tees and teachers, to be held at Wood stock on Saturday, Nov. 14, is one of the most important meetings that has ever been called for the discussion of educational questions. Bills will be in troduced into the next legislature that provides for the reconstruction of the entire school law and the people owe it to themselves and their children to be come intelligently posted on these qnee tions. Here are a few of the proposed changes: To drop the present school listrict system and substitute the town I ship as the unit; change the certificat i ing system and place the function ol exoOjiuiuK teachers in the hands of • state board of education. Other pro posals are to establish state and county boards of education and to establish definite standards educationally and pro fessionally for county superintendents. These are some of the more important measures. NoW^ the county superin tendent is trying to gather sentiment on these proposed bills that are far reaeh ing in their effects. He sincerely hoper that every school official in McHenry county will be present at this meeting. It is altogether too important for them to neglect it. There will be many speakers present, but the nature of the meeting is Buch that* every one attend ing it should constitute himself a num ber on the program. SPSS wnn/ *; HON. Frost, former bead of the Chicago-Milwaukee Electric Railroad company, has given his approval formally to the plans of Robert D. Wynn of Waukegan to rescue the Waukegan, Fox Lake and Western railway from the hands of the receivers, make it an independent line and extend, it (o the lakes district. Mr. Frost and Mr. Wynn dined to gether at the Union League club in Chi cago Tuesday night and talked over the plans for the proposed change. The re sult was that Mr. FroBt has promised his active efforts on Mr. Wynn's behalf. "1 shall do all in my power to help the road along," said Mr. Frost. "If you can raise the necessary capi tal, the rest should be easy. The re ceivers will probably release the old Waukegan, Fqx Lake and Western road to you to those whom.you interest, and I am sure the extension of the Fox Lake line west to the lakes and further would be a profitable undertaking. I shall aid you all I can in getting your former road free Of the receivership. "I want you to tell all my friends in Waukegan and Lake county that I have not forgotten them, that i remember them well, in fact, and that I wish yon to remember me to them. I shall never forget their kindness in suspending judgment on me and the affairs of the road as they have done and are doing." Mr. Wynn, who told of the dinner, stated that he has not yet begnn to free the Fox Lake line from the entangle ment of the receiVership. "In fact, 1 think I shall- wait until after election, as I am a busy man now," he stated. "I shall have to raise one-fourth of the money needed for the extension, or approximately $800,000, in Lake county, and I am sure I can do it when the time comes that I need it to finish so great a project," As Mr. Wynn and his associates, un named capitalists who will supply three fourths of the capital, or $900,000 to build the road, now plan the route, it will start at Waukegan, proceed to Gurnee, possibly on a private right of way after the end of Washinton street is reached, continue to Druce lake, the great summer resort where it ia so much needed, go on to Gra^ slake, cross the line to McHenry and Woodstock, and end at Marengo.
