This Ha» Become an Annnal EvcntThru- uut the Country Schools of the County and Should Bring Great Interest. Corn day in the country schools of McHenry connty will be~observedon Friday, Nov. 11. This has become an annual event of import, anne in the conn- try schools and we want every teacher in this connty to make this a day to be long remembered in the annals of school affairs in this connty. Every country teacher is to take every precaution and put forth every effort to make this the banner corn exhibit not only in the schools but in the history of the connty. From now nntil the eleventh of Novem ber they will be requested and urged to put forth nnnsual energy in this direc tion. Many people do not consider the epigram "corn is king" as applicable to McHenry connty, but would modify it to suit the industry of the farmers into "t^e cow is queen" as the slogan of the county. However, we must not forget that this queen is vitally dependent on the total quantity of corn raised in this county for her title of supremacy. Reasoning thns, "corn is king," even though it be somewhat removed from the corn belt as it is in McHenry coun ty. More corn means more cows, more cows mean more milk, more milk means more money and more money ought to mean better homes and better country schools. These in turn mean better citizens and more efficient living. Back of all this in the country community is [iho foFuicr aud the mission of the little country school is to improve the farmer as well as to educate doctors, lawyers, ministers, statesmen and demagogues. Wealth is the beginning, not the end of life. It is the foundation stone of in dividual and national greatness. Wealth honestly obtained and justly distributed contributes mightily to human happi nees. The humble country school in seeking to contribute to the spiritual needs of life should not overlook the large dependence of spiritual wealth on material wealth. So the country school should look to the material things of life as well in order to bring into ex istence that abundant and efficient life that we all are seeking. Let us look for a moment at the large ness of the task imposed and note the grand total results from small local im provement in production. McHenry county has in round numbers about 4000 farms, averaging about 100 acres each. If each farmer planted twenty- five acres of corn we should have 100,- 000 acres of corn in this connty. If every farmer by a little extra care in selecting seed corn, preparing the ground, and cultivating the crop prop erly, shonld increase the yield by one basket of husked corn per acre, it would give to the county as a whole 100,000 baskets more corn. This if it were worth 30 cents a basket would mean $30,000 more money for the county. This in turn would pay all the country school taxes of this county. This ie not paid as willingly as it would be if the tax payers thought they were getting more in return .for their money. This is too little to pay out for these inetitu tions, but much more will be paid out some day when people feel that the in vestment pays. It will pay and the way to make it pay is to ask the conn* try school to minister more to conntry needs. The country boy and girl should be made more helpful on the farm from the fact that they attend|the neighbor ing country school; instead of this, how ever, we often find the great majority with their faces turned forever away from the farm and its life and a little later we find them in manhood in the large cities, where they too often join the mob in crying for legislation that [never can result in lower prices or ^forming "boosting clabs" to sell stock or vacant lots for an industry that pos sibly and probably is already over crowded. One does not need to be classed either as a pessimist, "a knock er, "or even a prophet to predict that unless we check this irrational and baneful habit of flocking to the cities we shall within three more generations find the "cry for bread" going up in onr own boasted free Country with its so- called unlimited resources and wealth, The little country school and the modest farm fire-side have a mission to perform and a big task ahead for them, This initiation of "corn day" is simply a sign post of the right road to follow. Make the school contribute to life. Put more of reason into farm life, more of sober judgment into the movement city ward, more of sanity into onr calls for cure-all legislation for social and ecO' nomic maladies that can be only rem edied by a sober readjustment in oar habits. In short, form some-"boosting' clubs for farm life. siun in the afternoon. Every teacher in the county will make himself a mm- mittee of one on advertising this uniqu# BKStisg. While the whole affair will savor of farm and form life, yet there will be excellent speaking provided for the teachers of the graded schools of the connty. However, every teacher, whether of the country schools or from the town schools, shonld consider him* •elf a vital part of the meeting. This oounty is striotly rural and depends al most wholly on the prosperity of th# farmer and the intelligence of ths farmer for the maintenance of all it* best institutions. The teacher of Latin in the high schools of McHenry county must intereet herself in the work of the farm and farmer if she would uisks hsr- self most serviceable to that ooiuiuuu- ity in which she teaches. This meeting is not planned solely for the country teacher. It is for all the teachers of the county, and in addition to this for all the people of the farming communities of the county. That the dancing crase'is losing none of its charm in McHenry and vicinity is evident from the manner that these social functions are being patronized here. The dances at Stoffel s hall dar ing the past Hammer have been of ex ceptionally high order, and from the manner that the young people of this place and the surrounding towns are turning out to these affairs we feel safe in stating that McHenry is one of the most popular dancing places in the county. The biggest dancing event of the season will take place ofi Saturday evening, Oct. 29, when Sherman's seven piece orchestra of Woodstock has been engaged to furnish the mnsic. It is, indeed, very seldom that the dance lov ing pnblic of McHenry is given the op portunity of tripping the light fantas tic to the strains of a seven piece orches tra and for this reason the event is being looked forward to with pleasure, by the young people especially. Danoing will begin at 8:30 p. m., sharp, and will con tinue until 12:00 o'clock. Tickets for this occasion are $1.00. All are invited. Pound Social. The Ladies' Aid society of the M. E, church will hold a poand social at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Wfnt- worth on Tuesday evening next, Nov* 1. This will also be a reception to their pastor, Rev. W. A. Cross. Each person attending is expected to bring one or more pounds as payment for the even ing's pleasure, which includes a good program and refreshments. A general invitation is extended to all. Anyone finding it impossible to attend and wish ing to swell the number of pomnds received may leave any donations at the Wentworth home at any time and the committee in charge will be pleased to label and take charge of same. Don't forget the date, Tuesday evening, No vember 1. Public Card Party. The local camp of M. W. A. will give a public card party in their hall next Thursday evening. Nov. 10, proceeds to- be nsed for the erection of a tent at the tuberculosis colony at Colorado Springs, Colo., for the members of the M. W. A. This tent is to be bnilt and maintained by the M. W.
