4 Electric Power "Exercises Many Functions That Are Peculiarly Its Own There are certain mechanical plants that can be run by Electricity only-for example the big stone quarries around Chicago. They require cars that without anybody aboard will travel over a mile of track, start when wanted, stop when wanted, climb up steep grades with 10 ton loads and run down again without damaging any thing. Electricity alone supplies the way to do this. The operation furnishes a graphic object lesson of f The Flexibility of Electric Power --the readiness with which it meets any requirement This fact is of intimate interest to numerous mechanical plants which have developed the need of a change in arrangement, or of an addition to mechanical equip ment, or of an improvement in the working of some integral part; or perhaps that face a requirement to do something that cannot be done by steam except at pro hibitive cost for installation and operation. The proper resort at this stage is to Electric Power Why'? Because it is adaptable to any mechanical situ ation or any kind of machinery; it reduces lost motion --its application is direct: it is compact--you can put a tremendously powerful motor in small space'; its con trol is simple; its efficiency is the highest and its cost the lowest. And of course we are prepared to demon strate the truth of all this. A plant provided with the economic advantages of electric motor drive Is like a runner stripped of surplus weight ready for a race.
