The weath er, he writes, has been nice and warm and of the growing variety. He has. about thirty tons of hay in stack and has also harvested his barley. His oats will register 75 bushels to the acre. The Lake county board of supervis­ ors made a trip to Pox Lake on Wed­ nesday of last week in an effort to look over the swamp lands at that place and they discovered, much to their surprise, that the greater part of the land was under water. But nevertheless the county has some valuable land there and some of it has sold for as high as frlOO an acre. In all there are over 10,000 acres in the land and it is worth a large sum to thecoun^ ty figuring it at this rate. What the county will do in regard to the matter has not been definitely decided. The claim of the county, while it is not complete on these lands, is as good as any of the "squatters" and there is every probability that efforts will be made to have them ejected in the near future. Until a short time ago the board of supervisors did not know that the coun­ ty had so much valuable land, but as soon as they learned it they proceeded to make an investigation. A part of the year this land is not worth a thing, as it is under water, but at the present the supervisors feel that the county should receive the ben­ efit of this property and they will at once take steps to see that it does. The water covering the land is not deep and is only on it a few weeks of the year. The swamp land, matter is one that has caused any amount of controversy ijgr some little time, due to the fact that the board has been unable to se a fair price for the land which people in the vicinity wish to purchase. There is a large amount of this low land to which the county holds title and as there have been many opportunities to dispose of it the board wishes to defi­ nitely settle what the land is worth. Years ago large tracts of this swamp land were sold for as low as $1.00 and $1.25-an acre. The owners proceeded to fill in the land and as a result the value has been increased to $100 an acre, the profit being about ten thou­ sand per cent. The board of supervisors do not wish to dispose of any more of the land at such a ridiculously low figure and for this reason they will determine just what the land really is worth. The property owners whose land buts on this swamp land will be given the first opportunity to buy additional land and if there is any left it will be sold to the others who have put in a bid for it. Another matter that has given the board considerable trouble is the island in Pistakee bay. It was formed by the deposits of sand and earth which were taken when the canal between Fox and Long lakes was excavated. Hard­ ly had "the island been formed whex} "squatters" from Chicago took up' their abode on it, building a little cot­ tage. There might not have been so much objection to this had there not been complaints that the people who occu­ py the island have one continual rev- ehpy from morning until late at night, which, it is said, is quite annoying to the re sorters who occupy cottages on the mainland, scarcely one hundred feet away. A coin plainVwas made to the board last year and the "squatters" were ordered to leave the island. This they refused to do and still occupy it this year. The board intends to see that its order is carried out. All Lake county is showing wide in­ terest in the swamp lands and the county is wondering what action the board wiii take ou lhe /nailer. According to a supervisor the title of the county is not entirely clear and the land is worth thousands of dollars. Accordingwto the county officials an in­ vestigation will be made at once and an effort will be made to see exactly how strong a claim the county has on these lands. The "squatters," people from Chica­ go and other points who have taken possession and who have paid for the land, believe that they have a good title to the land and will fight any action that the board may take regard­ ing the matter. These people believe that they will ^iave a good title to the land, and state that they will continue to stay there until ousted.
