Philadelphia, Nov. 30.--The Cincin nati express on the Pennsylvania rail road was derailed at Glenloch, twen ty-five miles from this city, Thursday. Four persons were killed and fifty in jured, some of them fatally, in the crash. The train, a double-header, was run ning at the rate of^fifty miles an hour when the accident occurred. Derailed, It Is believed, by a broken rail, one day coach and three Pullmans, all of steel construction, rolled down an em bankment, upon a string of coal cars standing at a lower level upon a parallel track. The cars, with their human freight tossed about the seats, berths and cor ridors, were piled high on both sides of the coal cars, some of which were derailed and turned around by the force of the impact. Brooklyn, N. Y.--You cant shoot bear or moose in New York state, but one ardent sportsman, whose work keeps him from satisfying his love of the chase where wild life abounds, has satisfied his craving for that form of excitement In this way: Fate has decreed that he should live In Brooklyn, and around the back yard of his home runs a^lgh board fence. This fence is the night prom enade for all the cats from Jorale- ffion street to Coney Island. Old maid cats come there to meet distant rela tives, sedate married cats bring their families, and aa a trysting place for cats contemplating matrimony it is un rivaled. There is a church right back of the house, and in the shadows of its gothic arches ardent Toms give voice to their sentiments in wails that pervade the neighborhood. The sportsman stood all this with such patience as ,he could command until one night, not so long ago, his wife aroused him from his "beauty" sleep to tell him she was sure some heartless wretch had abandoned a baby in the churchyard. "You must go over there and make sure," she said. "I can't stand it a minute longer." "My dear," he expostulated. "It's tho dead of night and very chilly." His remonstrances were cut euort by a long-drawn wail such as could only come from a baby suffering from hunger and cold. Hastily he donned dressing gown and slippers, and, Btumbling down the dark, front stairs, made for the churchyard. As he en tered the gate he found the policeman on "fixed post" at the corner had spotted him and was close at his Lcels. "There's a baby in the churchyard," he explained through chattering teeth. The policeman, with a club of sym pathy, followed to the place from NEWS Wash ing ton , Nov . 28 .-- Rumors t ha t Sec re t a ry Meyer o f t he navy depa r t men t was abou t t o r e s ign , wh ich were In a c t ive c i r cu l a t i on in Wash ing ton Tuesday , b rough t an empha t i c den ia l f rom the sec re t a ry h imse l f . You don't suppose they would leave them at home, do you?" "I shouldn't like to be there when they were firing. I hate firing." "Why, silly, they don't fire." "Don't they? The policeman sat down on the steps of the church and laughed as no police man was ever known to laugh before, but the sportsman went back to bed with rage in his heart. He thought it all over the next day, and that night, as he went home, stopped in a hardware store and bought an air gun and some buckshct. Right after dinner he made an excuse for going upstairs and locked himself in the bathroom, which overlooks tho churchyard. Opening the window and putting out tho light, he waited for the first cat to appear. He found his aim was still good, for that cat c ap peared with a yowl that brought deep satisfaction to the sportsman's heart. Since the inspiration came to him he has not lacked for thrills almost equal to those of the Maine woods. The only trouble is, cats are becom ing scarce. MARE SWIMS TO THE RESCUE Dr. Robert H. Appleton, the owner of Camp Warren, took liis gray mare Fanny down to the water for a bath during the recent warm weather, they had not been splashing about long before ^be man saw that some 150 feet off shore some one was clinging to an overturned rowboat and making feeble signals of distress. Mr. Appleton lost no time In climbing on the mare's back and whispering to her what the trouble was. She seemed to agree with him that something would have to be done im mediately, and swam off toward the overturned boat. As they drew near through the waves Mr. Appleton saw that the man w^s all but conscious from exhaustion and that they had come none too soon. In a few mo ments he had lifted the half limp fig ure to the mare's back and held him there, while Fanny, swimming as she never swum before, carried her double burden to shore. Under the ministrations of people on shore, the man was soon righted and able to introduce himself as Oeoige Richards of New York city. He had been fishing, he said, and the choppy sea was too much for him. His boat was smacked so severely by one wave that it overturned and he had been hanging on for twenty min utes before Mr. Appleton and Fanny reached him. Explaining What a Snob Real ly Is . "Uncle Roy, what is a snob?" "A snob, Eddie, is a person who in herits a ^reat deal of money, goes abroad and buys himself a veneer of culture, returns home and poses as a connoisseur of something, and goes around calling his poor relations 'par- vennes.' Why do you ask such a question, k'ddie?" , "Because I heard Donald's big brother talking about you this after noon and he said you were a snob." Retort Discourteous. You ought to have hired an aeroplane.--Judge A DOCTOR'S SLEEP Found He Had to Leave Off Coffee. Many persons do not realize that a bad stopiach will cause insomnia. Coffee and tea drinking being such an ancient and respectable form of habit, few realize that the drug--caf fe ine--contained in coffee and tea. Is one #f the principal causes of dys pepsia and nervous troubles. Without their usual portion of cof fee or tea, the caffeine topers are nervous, irritable and fretful. That's the way with a whisky drinker. He has got to have his dram "to settle his nerves"--habit. To leave off coffee or tea is an easy matter if you want to try it, because Postum gives a gentle but natural support to the nerves and does not contain any drug--nothing but food. Physicians know this to be true, as one from Ga. writes: "I have cured myself of a long standing case of Nervous Dyspepsia by leaving off coffee and using Post um." says the doctor. "I also enjoy refreshing sleep, to which I've been an utter stranger for 20 years. "In treating dyspepsia in its various types, I find little trouble when I can induce patients to quit coffee and adopt Postum." The Dr. is right and "there's a reason." Read the little book, ' The Road to Wellville," in pkgs. Postum now comes in concentrated, powder foi-m called Instant Postum. It is prepared by stirring a level tea- spoonful in a cup of hot water, adding sugar to taste, and enough cream to bring the color to golden brown. Instant Postum is convenient; there's no waste; and the flavour is always uniform. Sold by grocers--50- cup tin 30 cts., 100-cup tin 50 cts.
