J WOMEN ASK DADY'S ASSISTANCE WQX TALK OVE* tHEW DEBIHE TO HAVE rat LAKE DISTRICT CLEANED OP . r."-5 Efforts to provide for a general clean ing up of the conditions at Fox Lake in order that the National Young Wo men's Christian association may estab lish an encampment on the shores of this beautiful lake, have, not been dropped, but are being pushed with more vigor than ever. Mrs. N. W. Harris, wife of a Chica go banker, whose fortune is estimated at many millions, has taken a keen in terest in the movement and has writ ten a personal letter to State's Attor ney Dady of Waukegan, in whieh she has laid the facts before him and has asked for his eo-operation. She has pointed out how it is possible for him to correct existing conditions at Fox Lake and begs him to assure her and the other people who are interested in the movement (hat the clean-up cam paign is inaugurated and that condi tions are cleaned up permanently. She says that his word that this will be dond will result in work being start ed at once in putting up an expensive building to be used for housing the young women who would take advan tage of .the encampment. That Mr. Dady is interested itr the matter is indicated by the fact that he answered Mrs. Harris' letter, asking her and the others behind the move ment to hold a conference with him in Waukegan. He set-no definite time for this conference, but doubtless in tended to allow the women to suit their convenience.. The result of snch a meeting can only be speculated upon, but the women say they are sure that once they are given an opportunity to lay the facts before him that he will readily accede to their wishes. "The class of the Saturday and Sun day crowds that frequent Fox Lake is not very desirable," one man who is interested in /the movement said. while tfe would send 500 young women there every ten days during the sum mer months. Such a course, it seems to me, would be more desirable. Then, too, if the Y. W. C. A. establish an encampment it is practically assured that the Young Men's Christian asso ciation also will establish a camp there and the lake region would be bene fitted greatly. There is unlimited wealth back of the movement and some of the most prominent people in Lake Forest, Highland Park and Chicago are behind the move." VOLO CASE COURT COSTS ESTIMATORS PLACE FIGURES AT PROM C#aukegan Sunr ^ Supposing that Judge Donnelly should assess the maximnm fine of $2P0 each on the Volo defendants and they should pay the fine without fur ther litigation, would the county be recompensed for the expense that the six-day trial put the county to? This is a question which court at taches are trying to figure out for they have been figuring up about what the cost of the sensational trial was to the county of Lake. Qne man who figured out details placed his estimate at $1,500. Another put it at $800, while a third had the nerve to make his estimate at $2,000. It is believed the cost will run somewhere near $1,200 or .$1,500. . ; One man, figuring out the details, figures this way: Twenty-four jurors, tbe entire p«n- el (for all Ijave to be kept altho but twelve serve on the case?, at threp dollars a day for five days--$360. Twenty-five extra jurymen called, at $3 a day each for five days (mileage to be added).--$375. Keeping the twelve jurors and two bailiffs at least 12 a day for five days-- $140. Stenographer^ $8 a day for five days -- $ 4 0 . v . : Grand tw# days lor lwenty- three men at $3 .a <fay-4l&8. Service on witnesses "in all--$25 (estimated). Circuit clerk, $6 a day for six d»ys~- 16. >t' ' Six bailiffs at .$4 a day--$120. Mileage in all cases (estimated)*-- $200. Total of above semi-aqourste figures --$1,434. . . And the total fines, if paid at the maximum, at $200 each, would aggre gate $1,000. Of course, then, the de fendants would have to take care of the coats as well.
