SUFFERS LOSS OF 970,000 Permanent repairs on its storm- damaged lines in Lake, McHenry and Kane counties have nearly been com pleted by the Chicago Telephone com pany. An accounting, just taken by the company, shows its loss to be more than $70,000. The sleet storm, which played such havoc with telephone poles and wires in northern Illinois and in Wisconsin, began January 31, and lasted until February 3. During that compara tively short time 700 telephone poles were blown down or broken by the force of the storm and nearly 4,000 telephones were temporarily put out of commission in the three counties named. However, telephone service was' not allowed to lapse for any length of time. Temporary lines were strung and ser vice restored in most places within a few hour# after the storm was over. The task of making "temporary re pairs is a big one but from many years of experience with storms the tele phone company has evolved a wonder ful system for bringing order out of chaos and re-establishing service with in a brief span of time. All of the repair work in the Feb ruary storm was directed from the main office in Chicago. As fast as the reports of line trouble were received, repairmen were sent out to the points where their services were needed. The first work in the field was the removal of broken poles from the public roads, where they interferred with traffic. This done, the repair men strung emergency lines by means of which service wag promptly re stored, using for the purpose the short tops of broken poles, fence posts, trees--in fact anything that offered, to which a wire could be attached. As soon as possible the company started the permanent repair work. When pevmauent storm repairs are made, the costly wire apd material used for the temporary repairs be come so much junk and this is the source of a huge financial loss to the telephone company. However, every winter the company accepts the storm situation as a matter of course, meets the enormous expenditures without a word, and prepares for the winter to follow.
