The harvest party at the Riverside House on Thursday evening last was attended by about sixty-five couples and all report a good time. O. L. Lincoln, P. G. Bishop and C. L. Curtis have been camping and fish­ ing up the river fbr a week. They caught 178 black ,bass and 8 pickerel. Our public school will open o*( Mon­ day next, Sept. 5. The same corps of teachers are engaged at the brick school with the exception of the prin­ cipal. r. The Republican rally, under the auspices of the Republican League club of the town of McHenry, at the city hall on Monday evening was a grand success. v Ray Owen came out from Chicago on Sunday on his bicycle, doing;-the distance in exactly six hours. This we call good time. The distance is in the neighborhood of fifty miles. The gold medal contest, at the city hall Wednesday evening last, was well attended. There were five contestants and the medal was awarded to Miss Fannie psborne, daughter of Dr. Os­ borne of this village. Chas,. E. Lamphere has leased the Nichols block in this village and suc­ ceeds Mrs. Robbins in the restaurant business in that location. He has fitted the rooms up in first-class" style and added a dining room in the rear. Red Crbes Notes One hundred and ninety paid mem­ berships are enrolled in the McHenry branch., . The meeting Friday^ afternoon bf«Ught out eighteen volunteers. The evening meetings will not be held un­ til further notice. Thru the kindness of C. W. Stenger, treasurer of the McHenry branch, the finished articles were taken to Wood­ stock on Friday evening and the work was considered very creditable for both quality and workmanship. Eight knitted jackets were handed in on Friday and fourteen pairs of wristlets. The vice chairman re­ ceived permission from the Woodstock chapter to supply their own boys with knitted articles first and same will be attended to immediately. The box sent to Woodstock con­ tained* two dozen hospital sponges, thirty hospital shirts, twenty-six con­ valescent capes and six suits of pa- jamas, besides this nine sweaters and one dozen pair of wristlets were kept in reserve to supply the boys from home. Every lady in McHenry should inT terest herself in the work of the Red Cross whether she believes in war or not. If peafce was declared today the work would be just as essential.
